rained on me too!
Hi, Naomi from Geraldton here, enjoyed your Japan posts and thought I'd comment, having just got back from Japan a month ago, but mostly skiing. Spent a week in Kyoto and the day I went to Nara it rained as well. Thoroughly miserable, I bailed by lunchtime and accidentally took the all stations train back to Kyoto. Todaiji Temple was worth the trip though, and those deer were just plain aggressive, I would have thought they'd scare most small children. Still haven't managed to get to the NI, off to Wanaka for another 3 months in July. One day I shall come visit. Naomi

the tribe under a cherry tree

Beauties and the beasts
Beautiful cherry blossoms, and how great that some tourists were dressed in kimonos for a taste of authenticity. But, like you, the crowds and lack of green would have been a bit much for me. How lovely that you got to have dinner with a real Japanese family at their home, and the girls got to play with kids from another culture. Happy travels!

Kyoto
A pleasure to read and to look at the pictures. And thank you for writing. Enjoy! In Germany the flowering period of the cherry blossoms came to an end two weeks ago (very early this year). Erika

Naming of Abbey Caves
Read with interest your blog on the Abbey Caves. I am a descendant of Nathaniel & Amelia Clotworthy who settled there in 1859. The caves were names after their home in Northern Ireland as the rock formations reminded them oif the Abbey. Nathaniel came from the area around Antrim Castle. I have 2 photos taken in 1906 by Winklemann, a noted phoitographer of the time at the entrance to the Ivy Cave and there was ivy growing everywhere - hence the name I guess. I have Amelia's diary of 1896 and she refers to "the Caves" hardly a Sunday went by without there being visitors to the caves. I love your photos - am I able to print some off ? I'm very new to this blogging business. Cherry Daly

Gorgeous! Thanks heaps for sharing your lovely pics
Guys, you technically took us thro this trip. We loong to do a caravn trip, with my twinz (14 yr olds) and my hubby, and still a bit stratled re safety/budget/planning/risk etc etc the things we are worried to name a bit. You with your lovely bundle of joy have made it. Those flora fauna landscapes are ammmmzing! Next year I want to do a trip to Europe possibly (London, Paris, Belgium, Amsterdam Berlin, Prague, Vienna Vanice, Florence, Milano Barcelona etc etc with my daughter (can't afford we all 4 x together, all adult tickets :( also as a matter of 'bonding/patching' the 'teenage syndrome' - and hope to make it a memobrable trip for us both and wonder whether you both have any hints/tips to share with us . Couldn't see a blog, but seems you are 'well travelled'....Will see if we could meet you up in Whangarei sometime, see you belong to CS community too. If ever coming this way to Auckland, would love to host you lovely family. Beautiful Blog ...entertaining and informative! Warmest Regards to you all! D :)

the beginning of the end
The last three months we followed your travels throughout the South Island feeling as if we were accompanying you. We found some places we visited a year ago, but also a lot of places we have not been to. Rabbit Island was a favourite spot, with nice weather, marvellous water for swimming (just the right temperature) and last but not least: no sand flies! And in Nelson we too drew on John’s services for our car. He is so familiar with Volkswagen and spoke Dutch and German with us. We think you have made a good job of travelling as threetravelbugs and hope to read more.

We are glad to read that you have not been affected by the earthquake in Christchurch and we feel sad for the people there who lost their relatives or their houses. Hope that you three travelbugs are well. We will send you a photo of Oamaru with our syncro. Enjoy the last weeks of your journey! Erika + Willi

Thank you for letting me "see" South Island. We never went there when we lived in New Zealand ie to Elis work.

Thanks
for taking us back to Doubtful sound! We really really miss NZ, we had a truly awesome trip with the boys last time and hope to come back someday. It is closer from Japan than from Sweden after all, but this year we will only make it to Australia and camp for 2 weeks between sydney and brissie as Jenny can not use up more vacation days. Too bad. Sounds like a great trip you're on. We loved the Catlins and the wildlife just outside Dunedin (the albatrosses especially). If you are couchsurfing make sure to contact Southlander in Pukerau, fantastic people on a gorgeous farm outside Gore. Take care, we will follow your adventures and maybe some day they will take us to tha same place again... :-) / Jenny, Oskar, Mårten and Mattias

Camping by Lake Wakatipu

Happy family
Glad you could get out and travel again. Many families make the mistake of thinking it's better to stay at home with the kids. Surely you have more fun while exploring. Enjoy! Sorry the other kids (dogs) couldn't make the trip.

Sand-flies

Ahhh, sandflies!
We remember dodging the sandflies on the South Island...we ended up draping our mosquito net over the back of our camper van so we could at least get some fresh air! Interesting into about those pesky buggers! That's complete rubbish about colours though, but one thing is for certain - don't go into salt water with sandfly bites as it re-activates the anti-coagulants and the itching frenzy starts all over again! Reading your blog brought back some nice memories of our time in NZ...especially those orchard stalls - you guys are so lucky to have such cheap and good quality fruit! It is strange to be a tourist in your own country but fun too, hope the rest of your trip is good!

Thank you
Thanks to Alice I can follow your trip. I still miss New Zealand and I find myself homesick watching televisionprograms from NZ. So thanks again for letting me"se" South Island since I never went there. Love to you all.

Eagerly we are reading your travelogs and in thoughts we are accompanying you. A lot of places we have been a year ago. And we remember well the sand-flies at the West Coast. We were told, if you stayed long enough they would not harm you any longer ...

Robin Hood Bay
How is the suspension on the van? Lost any fillings? Robin Hood Bay looks really nice. You must have had a nice walk to the top of that hill. Samara looks like she thoroughly enjoyed her hot pool experience. I have been working in the lab the last couple of days and talking to some of the ladies about your trip. I have been working on our van hoping to get away for the long weekend but the weather doesn't look good here for the weekend. I hope the weather is treating you well. Look forward to the next installment.

Thank you for remembering times long past
Thanks to Alice I found out about your new trip. Lovely to see your little Samara again. I sew her as a newborn on picture from Grandmother. Love to you all. When will you travel to Sweden?

Whanganui River Road
Its nice to read your comments about our area, its pretty much the way life used to be, people get on with each other, dont stress [well most anyway!] when they have to wait for roadworks, and we enjoy a glorious natural environment. Its probably the most authentic part of our country. Thanks for visiting, Kia ora Annette
