It's a few minutes before sunrise (6:20 a.m.) and I'm still in my sleeping bag because the temperature in my tent is 46 degrees. This was the coldest night I've spent in a tent in years and I don't care to do it again. The cold woke me up several times, but I managed to sleep surprisingly well thanks to my new air mattress - a Christmas gift from Steve & Nicky. I retired early at 8:30 because I was worn out from the ride. Riding 550 miles in the East is like doing 750 miles on Western highways. Time to get moving and find breakfast. I had a hearty breakfast of sausage, eggs and hash browns at the campground dining hall, strolled back to my tent and suited up for a ride. My destination? Flagler ... read more

I took my time about loading, hoping the rising sun would warm the Gulf Coast landscape quickly. I fired the engine at 7:25 a.m., gassed at a Shell station in Gulfport, got onto eastbound I-10 and settled in for a day in the saddle. This was the first time I'd ridden any part of I-10 along the Gulf Coast on this bike and the ride began to feel like an adventure somewhere after Mobile, as I crossed into the Florida Panhandle. I stopped at the first rest area inside Florida for a snack, to check in with my wife and to shoot a photo of the bike with my phone. Lunch was a hasty one at the Chipley, Fla. Wendy's. I turned south on I-95 at Jacksonville, finally shedding my jacket liner somewhere north of Palm ... read more

It was mid-20s when I left home at 8:50 a.m. I had to maneuver around piles of snow and ice when I gassed at Trumann, Ark. The zipper pull thermometer on my jacket read about 38 when I stopped a few minutes ago for an early McLunch in Batesville, Miss. It can only get warmer. ++++++++++++ GULFPORT, Miss. - A big bowl of chili and a piece of pecan pie, washed down with water and coffee. I was worn out from cold and traffic when I dropped my sidestand at the Gulfport Motel 6, so I chose to walk to the nearby Waffle House rather than gear up and ride to dinner. I did about 500 miles today, most of them clenched against the cold despite my heated jacket liner, gloves, handgrips and seat. I was ... read more

Things are coming together - mostly - for a departure for Daytona tomorrow morning. I've checked the oil and concluded once again that I can't see a damned thing in that stupid oil sight glass. The guys at the Colorado Springs BMW dealership opined that I had overfilled the oil last summer when I set out for the West. Not seeing a level line of oil anywhere in the glass, and the glass being dark and murky even in the brightest light, I can only conclude that it is still full - even overfull. But on the chance that it's too low to show on the sight glass, I'm carrying a quart of BMW 10W50. I fired up the air compressor and brought the tires up to inflation spec - 36 psi front and 42 psi ... read more
