Our Big Adventure to India 2010

A wannabe adventurous traveller...:-)

Well, here we are on the second last day of our big trip. We’ve had a very nice but busy time and we’re ready to come home. It’s been a blast and definitely a trip that I’ll never forget. Time has flown but because we’ve seen and done so much, it feels like we’ve been here a lot longer than a month. We arrived back in Mumbai on Friday, August 13 and it was nice to be back to such a hustling, bustling city. The rain has decreased a lot and so we were welcomed with nice, dry roads that were in good repair. Since we’ve been back, the traffic hasn’t seemed as bad either. Traffic is a huge complaint of almost everyone who lives in a big city like this. Yesterday, Jayesh’s cousin Mona told ... read more

I know that some of you might have been thinking that maybe I’m writing a book entitled “Eat, Pray, Eat”, but I can assure you that I’m not. In fact, it’s called “Eat, Pray, Drive and then Drive Some More”. While I’m kidding about the book, I’m not kidding that we drove some more today! That’s right, another hair-raising seven hours or so for a return trip to the hill station known as Darjeeling. Our driver picked us up this morning at 9 am and it took us about 3.5 hours to climb up this REALLY steep mountain in order to get to this really nothing town. We endured switchback after switchback in the heavy rain and fog (why oh why did we think this was a good idea at this time of year) on another ... read more

India is definitely known as the land of extremes. Here we are in week 3 of our month long trip and we’ve seen so much. To Jayesh, it might be more something he’s used to, but for me - it’s been a real eyeopener. I think it’s apparent to both of us however, that every single one of us living in North America (and particularly Canada) can count ourselves as having been blessed immeasurably. Because many of the places we’ve visited so far have been in rural areas, everything from driving on the lumpy bumpy roads that are much too small for two-way traffic of every vehicle imaginable to the sights of how people spend their lives and their days has taught me to be extremely appreciative of everything and everyone I have in my life. ... read more

My advance apologies - this will be a long one! Also - sorry that the pictures are out of order and not always labeled - having technical issues! Hello, hello - I have access to technology once again! I am happy to say that I made it somehow through the last almost week, albeit begrudgingly at times I’ll admit. Jayesh and I are now in The City of Joy, Kolkata, after having spent the better part of the last week in very remote villages in the state of Gujarat. Yes, I actually survived the overnight train somehow, but boy oh boy, I’m not designed for that sort of travel. The train ride itself was really not that bad to be honest. Last Thursday night, we boarded on to the two tier A/C train at around 8 ... read more

Hope this entry finds you and yours all doing well. Today we ended the first main part of our trip - we’re leaving Mumbai for a little while and hence I’m not sure, at least for the next few days, how often I will be able to get online. We’re headed off to Jayesh’s native place, Gujarat in order to attend to some spiritual activities. I have to admit that I’m slightly, well, actually a lot, reluctant because we’re heading there by, wait for it, train (!). From our first destination, an A/C bus has been booked which will take us and 6 other family members to 3 different rural areas. The thing is, when Mumbai-kers warn me by giving me groans and then looking at Jayesh with questions about how I’ll manage, I start to ... read more

Well, we’ve been in Mumbai almost one week but not quite yet - and it feels like forever. That’s not a bad thing at all. It’s just that there’s been so much to do and see although we feel like we’ve barely scratched the surface. Partly this is because our sleeping patterns are still crazy. Our bodies are just not adjusting quickly enough! It’s getting better though and at this rate, perhaps in 3 weeks when we’re on our way home, we’ll be sleeping perfectly. Before I forget, I wanted to say thank you very much for all your comments on the blog. I’m glad that it’s being read and enjoyed and that we can share our trip with you. We’re having lots of fun and it’s very interesting and eye-opening to be here. I should ... read more

So, we woke up with the best of intentions to get lots of stuff done yesterday. Got ourselves ready and headed to the breakfast we really look forward to. We have often booked hotels that has breakfast included but after the first day, we usually end up sleeping in and skipping the meal altogether because it’s nothing special. It’s really nice to see Jayesh want to wake up so that we can arrive in time for the breakfast. And because we’re *still* struggling with jetlag (better today), the fact that we want to give up sleep to eat is kind of cool. My favourite thing is the sweet lime juice - freshly squeezed. I just guzzle that down. I also start the day with a couple of tablespoons of plain “homemade” yogurt. I was told that ... read more

....But...let's just say that I was reminded really quickly not to go gung ho. I think I was a little too rambunctious on Day 1 trying everything. Despite being careful not to drink the water, I think the spices decided to do a little welcome dance for me in my tummy yesterday. This little gesture combined with jetlag having a hayday with me has made it challenging to get on schedule so far. Aside from going downstairs to have some plain toast and tea for breakfast (despite the awesome food array available), yesterday I spent much of the day in bed, sound asleep :-(. As tummy troubles of all sorts are a well-discussed item here among family and friends, everyone was aware that I was not well. Hence, out came all the ayervedic solutions (some of ... read more

Well, we arrived in Mumbai safe and sound about 12 hours ago as I type this. We had a pleasant but LONG journey getting here. In the future, we need to think about a more luxurious way to get here LOL. Sent off on Monday night by our family in Calgary, we hopped on board the British Airways flight to London Heathrow. Anxious of course to get on and get the journey started, there ended up being a medical emergency. Involved was a deportee, several policemen, firemen, and paramedics. And then throw in the passengers for commentary and drama. We got on the flight eventually tried to get comfortable...well as comfortable as sardines can be. Sleeping on and off through the flight we arrived to London Heathrow with a net of 2 hours of sleep I ... read more
