Since the butterflies are up in the mountains and in cooler temps, we left a suitcase of warm weather clothes like shorts and swimsuits at the hotel. We will be back at Hotel Kioto in four days after our Morelia trip. We left our stuff with Enrique, the guy at the desk. We have him new Minnesota Twins hat. We got a big smile, so I think he was happy. Our bus to Morelia left at noon. We took a cab to the depot ($1.50), much simpler than walking that distance with luggage. The depot is open and quite warm, pigeons flying in and out. But we later found out we had first class tickets, so we could use the A/C waiting room. The bus we had was from the Parhikuni bus company. The bus we ... read more

This morning we walked down a side street to the municipal and pier area. We walked across a stone bridge and up a cobblestone street. Beautiful views from the hill, many trees with red flowers. Attractive homes along the way. Several years ago we took this route to a beautiful secluded beach, but it is now closed off and is private property. We ended up at a gated entry with a guard stand. Back down the hill and in through town again. We kept an eye out for a breakfast place. Found a good little spot with some local customers. Coffee here is good. It is served with coarse cane sugar and sometimes flavored with cinnamon. Have to be careful when walking the streets here. There are occasional holes, big rocks, and pieces of metal sticking ... read more

Happy two-month Birthday to Anna! (a couple of days late) Found another good spot for breakfast right by the hotel. Hotcakes or eggs, fruit, and coffee, $2.25 per person. Took our laundry to the lavenderia. They charge by kilogram, weighing it in a big bucket attached to a scale. Bob had a touch of the flu today so we didn't do much. Did some planning for our trip to Morelia and up to see the monarchs. The bus scheduling is confusing, so we need more planning. We spent a few lazy hours at a restaurant table on Madera Beach, down from the main municipal beach by the start of the walkway. We had a drink and enjoyed the view. A few vendors came by selling jewelry, pottery, and cheese. One guy kept unwrapping a two-inch wide ... read more

We walked into the newer part of Zihuat, to the bus depot. Got tickets to Morelia for Saturday. $30 per person, five hour ride. Interesting to walk through different neighborhoods. A lot of cleaning going on in the morning. People are sweeping and washing the sidewalks in front of their stores. The highway median was being swept off with large palm branches. We noticed many cement style apartment buildings, most with barred windows. The bus depot was large and quite modern. We had no trouble getting our tickets, with Bob's Spanish and the efficient clerk. Probably take a taxi there on Saturday when we have luggage. Stopped at a huge store, somewhat like a Wal-Mart, on the walk back. Great variety of items--groceries, beer, toys, clothing. Most T-shirt type tops ran from $10 to $15. Much ... read more

Breakfast at our hotel, then off for a day at the beach at Isla Ixtapa. Picked up the bus in Zihuat, about $1.50 total for both tickets. We went through a part of old Zihuat, then made a U-turn taking us along the highway to Ixtapa. Ixtapa was built up as a tourist destination, so it has a completely different feel from Zihuat. We drove by the well manicured lawns of exclusive hotels and golf courses. The bus let us off at Playa Linda, the location of the pier for boats to Isla Ixtapa. Boat tickets were $2.50 round-trip to the island per person. Prices here are a little higher than in Zihuat, but still reasonable. At the front of the beach is a small lagoon where you can see crocodiles and numerous birds like egrets ... read more

Noisy rooster by the hotel this morning. A good alarm clock! Had breakfast down the street at Dona Lupe. Eggs, fruit, tortillas, pancakes, juice and coffee, total $5. Today we went to Barra de Potosi, a little fishing village about twenty miles south of Zihuat. As we were walking to the bus depot, we saw a bus headed for Petatlan (further south than Potosi) and hopped on. The driver was fast and aggressive, so we made good time. There is always an assistant on the bus. He hangs out the door yelling "Peta, Peta" to announce the bus, and runs off occasionally to stamp a route sheet. Loud Mexican music played on the bus, and we made several stops along the way to pick up passengers. We were the only non-locals on the bus. We were ... read more

Today was a lazy, relaxing day. Breakfast this morning on a bench close to our room. WiFi isn't reliable in our room, but better just down the hall. Later in the morning we took a walk down to the pier. As you walk along the main beach in Zihuat (Playa Madiera), the restaurant servers try to lure you in for breakfast. At the end of the pier looking out across the water, you will see Playa La Ropa to the left and Playa Las Gatas to the right, our beach destinations for the previous two days. We walked through the artisan market area near the pier. Decided I needed more sun protection than from my Twins hat, so we went on a search. Walking through the market the vendors will make comments like "Want to spend ... read more

Today is the day we move to our new hotel, Plaza Kioto. We have stayed there before on other trips. We were told we could get in early, but we couldn't get in our room until 2pm. Since it was now 9am, we stowed our luggage behind the hotel desk and headed off to breakfast at Dona Licha. Breakfast time there is much less busy than lunch. After breakfast we headed for another beautiful beach, Playa La Ropa. The walk to La Ropa was partly an uphill climb along the road that follows the ocean. The hotels and restaurants get more exclusive as you climb up. We found the cobblestone road that leads back down to the ocean, and began our peaceful walk along the water. We settled in at a table close to the ocean, ... read more

Very quiet at the hotel last night. Went out this morning to get fruit. So oranges, bananas, pastries and coffee for breakfast on the patio. Bob makes good coffee. A hummingbird flew in closeby to visit. Cool in the mornings, but it starts to really heat up about 9:00am. Lots of activity on the street in the morning...vendors setting up their stalls, shops opening, etc. Lots of cats on the sidewalks this morning. Heard many doves cooing. Walked down to the beach and pier this morning. Bought boat tickets to go to the beach, Playa Las Gatas. Tickets very cheap, 50 cents total for two round trip tickets. A short (about 10 minutes), pleasant ride. The beach is lined with restaurants, tables, and lounge chairs. Each restaurant has their own welcomer, urging you to stop and ... read more

Left home before 5am to catch our 6:50 flight. No problems, very short lines at security. Flight left on time, and arrived in Zihuatanejo about 11:30. We only had carry-on, got a green light at customs inspection, so we got through very quickly. First stop was the ATM, which gave us 21.4 pesos per dollar, even after the conversion fee. You buy a taxi ticket at the airport, then pick up your ride outside. The 20 dollar taxi ride to the hotel was higher than we expected. You can find cheaper taxis away from the airport, but it is a very long walk with luggage. Our cab took us to the door of Hotel Zihua Express, which we had reserved through Booking.com. Hotel was clean and quiet, very friendly and helpful host. Balcony looked over the ... read more
