India features pretty prominently in the realm of producing cheaper, generic pharmaceuticals, so KEM is probably able to offer these drugs so much cheaper because of state-sponsored companies cranking out the generics en masse? That'd be my guess. Sweet blog bud! Glad you turned the elective into a Med-Peds elective :)
On your first day experience at KEM Hi Sunjay,
Good to read of your experience so far. While the bureaucratic redundancy might seem unnecessary to you, local people will likely find nothing wrong with it (as I did when I grew up there). It is whatever you are used to. You might consider bringing this up gently with some one of authority. But don't be surprised if you are told, "those are our rules sir!" and pretty much ignore your "logic".
In the mean time, enjoy the extraordinary and unique experiences of India. Ordinary people everywhere in the country (not the Govt folks) tend to be kind hearted and helpful. And some of the sights are unparalleled. So, enjoy!
Your Blog Sunj, your observation and first experiences with the red tape bureaucracy of the government was interesting. I am sure you will pick up a little Hindi along the way, you can count on Charu or myself for any sentences that you may need..... looking forward to reading more accounts from you.
I am a 4th year medical student at Texas A&M College of Medicine. I will be entering a combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics residency program in July 2012. I am blogging from Mumbai, where I am spending the entire month of February doing an Infectious Disease rotation at King Edward Memorial Hospital. KEM is an enormous government hospital that is affiliated with Seth GS Medical College, one of India's premiere medical schools. I hope you enjoy the chronicles of my trip, and please leave me your feedback!... full info
