We were staying in Saigon for another day and early the next morning we drove to Ben Tre, a southern province located in the Mekong Delta. The Mekong River passes through five other countries before its arrival in Vietnam where it turns into nine rivers before it flows out into the South China Sea, or the Eastern Sea as the Vietnamese call it. We soon passed out of the city and on to the freeway which speeded up our journey as scooters are not allowed on this road and this really made a difference. We saw many rice paddies and fruit farms emerging alongside the highway as we left the busy city far behind. Rice is Vietnam’s second largest export and in the Mekong Delta they can have up to four crops a year as due ... read more

So here we are again on our travels and this time we are joining a 28 day tour around Indochina rather than travel independently as we usually do. The tour covers, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and then we will remain for a further 3 weeks in Siem Reap when the tour ends before heading off to the Maldives for a ‘holiday’!! We said goodbye to Geoff, Sharon and Maisie in Dubai where we had been for 6 weeks so it was sad to leave but we were so excited about returning to Asia after so long. We were held up at Dubai airport and sat on the tarmac for an hour whilst there was a medical emergency and therefore got into Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) later than expected and then had to wait ages for ... read more

It took forever to get back on to the ‘main’ road (ever upwards with steep drops each side) and we were already missing the tranquility and comfort of Trogon Lodge. Luis, our driver had a couple of words of English - more than we had of Spanish and we got by with sign language for most of the two hour journey to the Orosi Valley. He showed us a map of the route and it was quite funny as the ‘legend’ showed, main roads, secondary roads, tracks and dangerous roads and guess which one we were on! We finally drove through the city of Cartago and the town of Paraiso before stopping at the top of the valley where Luis pointed out where we were. It was such a lovely view and we could see the ... read more

We were picked up on time by a driver called Jonny who had a little English and we set off to San Gerardo de Dota. Hopsey the manager at Cerro Lodge had told us it would take about two and a half hours. We were heading for Trogon Lodge which is located in Savegre, San Gerardo de Dota, near Cerro de la Muerte, one of the Costa Rica’s highest peaks. We travelled along the coast road passing huge plantations of palm trees. The palm trees produced fruit for palm oil and we also passed a couple of large processing plants nearby. The road was quite good and we travelled through Jaco following the Central Pacific coastline, before arriving at the small village of Dominical which is a surfer’s paradise where waves apparently can reach over 10 ... read more

It was lovely to ‘dry out’ and get our clothes clean after so much rain in Tortuguero and Selva Verde. That being said we would not have missed the experiences we had there for the world. We never thought we would get the washing dry or the mould out of our clothes but after a hot wash in the luxury of a washing machine (nearly forgot what this was) and a hot dryer our clothes were at last dry and clean. We spent a couple of days in San Jose not doing much really so nothing to report for a change.............but soon we were heading off towards the Pacific Coast again. We were picked up by Frederico our host and his seven year old son in his car. They had stayed overnight in San Jose with ... read more

Our transport vehicle did finally arrive at the Rio Dante restaurant and we travelled inland to Selva Verde with a nice elderly chap who could speak no English but we managed to get by with our limited Spanish - he just laughed all the time and was rather jolly............. We had come to the area as it is renowned as a haven for nature enthusiasts with lots of birds and other wildlife. We were hoping to get to get some good photographs, particularly of the two toucans found here - the Chestnut-mandibled and the Keel-billed Toucan. Selva Verde is located in the midst of the Sarapiqui Rainforest preservation area in the lowlands of northeastern Costa Rica and it would be our last stay north of San Jose this trip. We were staying at Selva Verde Lodge ... read more

We left the cloud forests of Monteverde and headed back to San Jose. We were expecting improved roads than the ones we had arrived by - but it was not to be. Although the roads in the small town of Santa Elenawere sealed, once you left the town it all changed and it was back to unsealed bumpy roads full of pot holes. That being said the views as we climbed down out of the cloud forest were utterly stunning - a beautiful spectacular landscape all around us. We had chosen to use the shuttle bus service again and the only other passenger was a retired American who was really interesting to chat with. He had been in Santa Elena for a few days staying in backpacker accommodation as he said he always had to find ... read more

We liked living in our log cabin and enjoyed the peace and solitude of the grounds which bordered the cloud forest. There was always plenty of wildlife wandering around the cabin that we were never short of company. If we needed supplies there were a couple of small stores nearby or we could walk down the hill to the tiny town of Santa Elena- although we had the long steep climb to get back from the town to our cabin........We were about 2km from the town in one direction and several Forest Reserves for hiking in the other. I should warn you here before you read on that this is a rather long blog so do not feel obliged to read it all.............. What an incredible journey we had getting to Monteverde from La Fortuna. As mentioned in the last blog we had been warned that it was going to be a very long and bumpy journey - and it sure was. Getting our cases from the bus to the boat was quite difficult as there was not much tarmac to pull them along, so we had to lift them, whilst at the same time trying to watch where we were walking......... Luckily a nice American tourist helped lower mine off the side of the boat after we crossed to the other side of the lake. Which was just as well as the only way off was via a very wobbly metal step perched in the mud on the edge of the lake. A minivan was waiting for when ... read more

Our shuttle bus arrived to pick us up and take us to La Fortuna as we were the only travellers that day we had plenty of space and our driver Roberto was very pleasant company on the journey. He asked if we were OK after the previous night’s earthquake; he had been fishing and said that the earth started to move and then he noticed the water rippling - I think it must have scared the fish as he did not catch any! It scared us anyway.........We relayed our experience of the quake whilst we were at Tico Adventure Lodge as mentioned in the previous blog. It took about two and half hours to get to Limonal where all the small shuttle buses meet and said goodbye to Roberto. We had coffee whilst we waited for ... read more
