Lake Titicaca
Hey did you know that the Bolivian Navy is stationed on Lake Titicaca? You may wonder why a land locked country would need a navy, but the Bolivians are ever hopeful that they will reclaim the land they lost 100 years ago to Chile and have an outlet to the ocean. And that is the social studies lesson for the day. Enjoyed the blog, and especially loved heather in a skirt. I think you should wear that on the first day of school!

Nice to bump into you again in Aguas Calientes! We are suffering today following the Trail, hope you are doing ok! We have just been browsing your blog, you have wonderful pictures. Paul flew over Nazca lines too, decided to have lunch after the flight- a wise idea! Enjoy the rest of your travels- see you in a few weeks?!

coffee/beer...yummy
I have never heard of coffee/beer before, must be a local Peruvian drink, does it taste like coffee or beer or some weird combination of both? Love the pics, love the blogs, keep em coming. One other thing, is there some kind of contest for the driest place in the world because the Chileans believe that the Atacama desert is the driest place in the world since they get only 30 mm of rain a year, that has to be a lot less than 30 minutes of rain, or maybe they didn{t get the deluge of 1997, so they now believe they are the driest in the world. All I know is that after spending 7 days in desert like conditions, I look like the mummies that you saw! By the way Heather, good thing you teach Math because your spelling sucks!

just like your blogs
Hi guys, I realize you don't know me and are writting to stay in touch with friends and family, but I enjoyed all your stories, they take me back home, I'm and ecuadorian that lives in the States, and misses Ecuador every second of every day. I love when people from other "more developed" countries learn, experience and enjoy everything that Ecuador has to offer.

Curious
Keep the long stories coming.. I love it. I am learning SO much that between you and Google Earth I will never NEED to go to these places you are in and can spend all my money on candian beer MMM. In addition learning some useful neurological ditties. As a side note for those NON-Neurologists reading this.. Santiago Ramon y Cajal was a Spanish histologist noted for his work on the structure of the nervous system. How'd I do Shelagh? Have fun in Lima, I don't know much about it but read another blog about the catacombs of the Convento de San Francisco which sound neat.

I'm Jealous
It looks beautiful there. Sounds like you are having a great time, I want to still be on holidays. I think Heather, you can have the magic plant healing water, and the taste of dirt. I'll have a cerveza please!!

Another adventure
Perhaps those children have their own island and someone has an experiment going to see what will happen to them without adult supervision. Maybe a solution for all our issues and cheaters, simply abandon them on their own island! Hope the rest of your trip goes as well as it has started.

The coffee in this establishment sucks!!!
Speaking of coffee, its everywhere in Portugal and its freshly made and very strong. North American coffee is terrible as a found out, when I made a pot yesterday afternoon, after our air canada flight back from Toronto. I'll have a double shot espresso, please!!!
19th July 2006

Air Canada could take Lessons
That sounds great, Air Canada could take lessons from the Albatross, maybe they could get their flights out on time.
19th July 2006

Do they even grow bananas there?
I was glad to see that you've found one meal (chicken on the roadside) that didn't combine bananas and cheese- maybe I WILL visit someday! And apparently Heather is blind no more, but now red, itchy and peeling. Hey, me too (poison ivy)!!

CBE risk assessment forms
I won't even take my students to the Museum of the Regiment for fear they stumble down the steps and some damn parent claim the child suffered mental anguish due to the trauma. Maybe I'll offer up a trip to Israel for the Religous studies course eh! Glad you two are having fun!

corr blimey...!!
can't wait for the true Spanglish pronounciations over cerveaza- great to hear you're having a blast and that you are safe from the world of Stampede!! and being eaten alive by the dreaded mossie!!

copulation
Ok, so you got pics of the tortoises mating, they sound somewhat discreet compared to the elephants (mostly male) in Zimbabwe preparing for mating! I couldn't keep my eyes off them, but my husband (who is not in any way a prude) wouldn't let me take pictures!!!!! The islands sound fantastic, now I need to go back to Ecuador just to see the Galapagos. Maybe I will drag Ken for some mating fun! Alas poor George, he may not be gay, just old! After all in tortoise years, that has to be at least a 100!

I'm jealous of your fab adventures and relaxed attitude. I'm wishing I had taken more time off! Biking was great, but I'm muy bruised and battered. Alas am still awaiting furniture.

Answers to your questions
I think that all of these things have to do with the $1 beer. Clearly you are weaker after all those beers especially in the equitorial heat...the egg only looks like it is balancing on the nial because you are lauing down with your face on the pavement looking at it laying beside you...and you weigh less because the amount is in kilos not in pounds. Either that or you are reading it backwards. Glad to hear you are having fun. I love the photos.

Food
Question, is the man throwing toffee or swatting flys? Or is this an example of a male multi tasking? You cannot blame a person for having barly sandwichs for a meal. It rehydrates, has fiber, and is parisite free. At that price what more could you ask for?
7th July 2006

Weightless
Don't think that by being at the equator you've lost a few pounds, it's not that significant. If you want a proper answer, it's the fact that you're further away from the earth's axis and and have a larger outward acceleration (-ve g's) I now want a postcard and more info on the beer!

Sounds like fun
I am glad you are having fun and laughing in the face of danger, I agree we north americans put to much emaphsis on safety. Nothing like careening down the side of a dark mountain, in bus with several hundred of your new best friends. I agree with Shelagh, 1€ for a beer is a great deal, and its avaliable on every street corner here in Ponta Delgado - Tomorrow we are off to Lisboa

Driving
Well it sounds like your having a great time, Sata International actually served edible food for an airline. Drving there sounds much more exciting. The roads here are very narrow and some are one way and some are not. The convertible has generated lots of inerest wherever we go. But then I enjoy being the center of attention.

If you get desperate let me know and I will fed ex some granola bars. I think it is wonderful that you are in a country amoung short people, means all you have to do is stand up straight and you will see each other no matter how large the crowd... enjoy. PEACE OUT!
