We were up at 5:30 AM today because we had a long drive to make. And I have to add, I really have little of note to write about. Moving days can be boring, because we are not touring anything and these days are usually chosen through uninspiring areas. We left the hotel before 7 AM and 56 degrees and said good-by to Shelby, MT. We spent two days in a town with no restaurants, two hotels and one casino. I was glad to be moving on. The drive took us through lots of flat farmland again today. And before we got the Wyoming, the topography did change somewhat, but not a whole lot. We made a pit stop in the middle of nowhere, at Eddie’s Corner in Montana, at the intersection of routes 87 & ... read more

Today we set out to visit a park that we have visited four times before. Glacier National Park. We left the hotel in Shelby at 8 AM and 59 degrees. It promised to be a chilly day in the park, but did not turn out that way at all. At Logan Pass it was 65 degrees. The sun was shining all day and the air was clear and bright. The drive to the park took us almost two hours. On the west side of the park is a town called Kalispell, and it is relatively close to the west entrance. But on the east side, there really is nothing much closer than Shelby. So we made the drive, through more construction and all, and got there around 10 AM. We saw a lot of farms with ... read more

Today was little more than a moving day. We left our hotel at 8:30 and 53 degrees and headed south to the great old USA. There was no plan for the day except to land in Shelby, MT so that we could make another visit to Glacier National Park. This will be our 5th time. We decided to begin with a tour of the city. Calgary has a big city center, with lots of glitzy high-rises in glass and stone and shiny metal. And it turned out to be a lot bigger than I had imagined. Last time we were here, we stayed in the outer part of Calgary and never did see the city. Everything there looks new and shiny and modern. Even the condos and apartment buildings are ultra modern in architecture and design. ... read more

Today promised to be a feast for sore eyes, and it didn’t disappoint. Having a long drive ahead of us, and knowing that we would lose an hour when we crossed the time line on the border of British Columbia and Alberta, we were up at 5:30 AM and out the door by 7:30 and 60 degrees. (Seems we could do this faster, but with the dog and a required routine, that is about the best that we can do.) We drove from Kamloops, the “Tournament Capital of Canada” to Calgary through the Canadian Rockies. We even crossed the Columbia River once again. And that had me scratching my head, but I discovered that the Columbia River begins in the Columbia Lake in British Columbia. Makes sense to me, I guess. I just never thought about ... read more

I have said in the past that if we set off without a plan, the day often has a plan for us. But the reverse can also be true. The day can often unravel well made plans by tossing a wrench in it all. Today was one of those days. We left our hotel at 8 AM and 62 degrees and raining, and headed north. Our plan was to drive to Vancouver and go back to the water’s edge to enjoy the view before proceeding on to Kamloops. Well, Border Control was the wrench. After spending an hour and a half in line at the border, (where 8 available lanes were only manned by 4 people) we no longer had time to go to Vancouver, so we had to turn east and go directly to Kamloops, ... read more

We were up very early this morning. Both of our phones started ringing with robo calls at 5 AM. OK, so they thought we were on EDT. But 8 AM is still too early for a robo call. Are we not all still waiting for the day when these calls cease once and for all? 5 AM. So of course it woke the dog too, and he figured it was time to get up and go for a walk. And so, our day began. We left the hotel at 7:45 and 61 degrees and headed west. Our target for today was Everett, WA, which is a town just north of Seattle. However, we had a plan to get there via Mount Rainier National Park. And that is what we did. When we left Walla Walla, we ... read more

Oh, how I love the northern states in the summer. When it is 85 degrees it feels fine. When it is 55 degrees, it still feels fine. Not so in Florida. The air up here is dry and refreshing, and it is a pleasant respite from the humidity back home. So, when we got up this morning and it was only 48 degrees, we still put on our shorts, knowing that in an hour or so, it would be comfortably in the 60’s. And it was. It actually made it to the 80’s before the day was done. We left the hotel at 8:10 AM and 54 degrees and headed west on I-90. It was my opinion that we needed a bit of a rest from the winding mountain roads. The past few days have had ... read more

Some days I find it very easy to write this blog and other days I do struggle. It depends a lot on how tired I am and how inspired I get with what we did and or saw that day. Yesterday was a struggle. Hopefully today will flow. So here we go. We left Pocatello, MT at 8:10 AM and 73 degrees. And we spent a good deal of time fighting with the soft talking lady in the black box. She wanted us to travel to Missoula on the interstate. But that is not where you have the best experiences and see the best vistas. So we continued to argue with her and work around her for the better part of two hours, until she finally relented and let us have our way. And boy were ... read more

I wasn’t expecting much today, at least not in the beginning. We were still in WY for much of the day and yesterday gave us a lot of …well, let’s say it was not inspiring. We left the hotel at 7:30 and 65 degrees and headed west. Again, the topography was mostly prairie with yellow grass and sage. But today we did see more signs of life. There were ranches and small towns along the way. And as we moved on, the blandness of the prairies gave way to the emergence of rock formations. One actually looked to me like the birth of new mountains…jagged shafts of rock sticking out of the ground, not very tall, but pushing toward the sky. And I thought, perhaps in 1000 years, these would be 10K ft. mountains. Who knows. ... read more

The theme for today is “no service”. When we are traveling, I use my phone to research the things we see, so that I can write intelligently about them, for my blog. But I was not able to do that today. For most of our drive to Casper, there was no service. In this day and age, with the technology we have available, how do these people survive without cell or internet on their phones? Or for that matter, do they even have cell phones? I guess they don’t. Well, we survived just fine for most of our lives without them, so if you don’t have one, you don’t miss it, I guess. So, we left Winter Park at 8:10 this morning and a chilly 53 degrees. But we dressed in shorts knowing that when we ... read more
