We woke up in our beach chairs by the sun and Albanian tourists going for an early swim. After a little swim of our own and a breakfast we started hitchhiking again. Within 15 minutes we were on our way again, in the direction of Sarandë. We were picked up by a friendly business man setting up a little beach place near Sarandë and he was on his way to make sure his beach chairs were delivered correctly. He drove us first to a deserted place where he had a meeting with the chair suppliers and after a few minutes of shouting and cursing we were on the way again. (The suppliers messed up the order and caused a lot of delay). We had a nice drive through the mountain roads of Albania and we decided ... read more

The next day Dylaver showed us the way to the centrum and pointed us to the bus station. We figured we might as well take a bus to Durrës and start from there as it costs only 1 euro per person to go there. When walking around and while sitting in the bus we were amazed at the chaos of the Albanian traffic. Everyone just seems to think about themselves and rules don´t seem to exist in the Albanian traffic jungle. As Dylaver put it: A lion in the jungle doesn´t need traffic lights so why do we? After an excruciating 40 minutes in an over-full hot minibus that felt more like an oven, we arived like baked potatoes in Durrës. This city is by far the weirdest city I have ever been to. Apparently people ... read more

We woke up this morning ready to start hitchhiking again. It took a while before we were done with breakfast and finding a cafe for a toilet but once we found a good hitchhiking spot it didn't take long to get a ride out of Dubrovnik. The guy was a friendly Balkan guy that didn't speak English but understood what we wanted. The drove like a madman through the mountain roads of Croatia with Balkan music on full volume. We had a good laugh with him for about a 10 minute ride. He dropped us of at a perfect place near an airport with only one road going into Montenegro. After an hour waiting we got a ride from a friendly Albanian guy who could speak a little bit English and German and we could drive ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Dubrovnik July 12th 2015

One day before we experienced that Dubrovnik was pretty busy with all those loud tourists but we still gave it a try and went to the old city. Since we knew they were shooting Game of Thrones there, we had to see a bit of Kings Landing. We ended up going crazy between the crowd. Everything was also double price of Zagreb and Drvenik. So it didnt take long for us to find our way out of the main street and get lost in the little streets. Except this tourist wave, Dubrovnik was a beautiful city and we found the perfect place to have dinner after a bit of walking. It was a small bay covered with the rocks and we sat at the stairs of an old castle. We had some food and beer and ... read more

By the time we had set up the tent and crawled in our sleeping bags it was already 2 AM. In the morning we woke up again early by the heat and by German tourists who aparently are crazy enough to go to the beach with their kids at 7 AM. Not surprisingly we were quite tired the next day. We spent most of the morning taking it easiy with swimming and making breakfast. We started hitchhiking after midday in unbearable heat. Luckily there was a little bit of shadow where we could sit. There was nut much traffic on the road to Drvenik and most of them were packed with unfriendly looking tourists. We didn't really try very hard to catch a ride. Yakamoz managed to study a bit and I found some time to ... read more

We spent this day mostly in Zagreb with Perica. Since he knew crazy amount of people in Croatia, he had already found a place for us to sleep in Rijeka so we were not rushing ourselves to start hitchhiking. Zagreb is like many other big cities, we visited a cathedral but then walked to the park to sit and drink a beer instead of doing more sightseeing. It was really cool to be there and see Perica after so much time but soon it was time to go. We took a bus to get out of the city center and walked to the toll gates on the highway where hitchhiking would be easier. Surprisingly the weather was also changing. Darker clouds covered the sky and a cool breeze made it much nicer to stand next to ... read more

We woke up in our tent backside of a tankstation. It was very very hot like every other day. I was literally meltin g under the big hard sun. After packing our stuff we started to ask for a ride. We had no plan about where we wanted to end up that night but going to Zagreb, Croatia was eventually our intention. I have a friend from there, Perica, whom I had not seen for 4 years. So I was really excited about visiting him there. Luck was on our side that morning. First we got a ride from a researcher , that was also my first attempt to study in the car for the coming exams in August. He dropped us somewhere and after a while a Jazz musician was very kind to make place ... read more

We decided to take it slow the next day in Venice. We got lost some more, washed our clothes and found an internet cafe to update the blog and plan the next part of the trip. With freshly washed clothes, hair and well-rested, we started our endeavor to leave Venice quite late. After just a few minutes of walking in the heat with the backpacks we felt already just as dirty as before, but ready to start traveling again. We tried for a few minutes to hitchhike from Venice (the only place where the cars could come) but we soon realized that such a busy place was no good for us. Also we were still under the impression that hitchhiking is illegal in Italy (which we later learned is not actually true), and having a police ... read more

Today we woke up early again but this time with a most welcome cool breeze through our tent. Since no bus drove from the little town on sundays we decided to walk along the road. It felt much less dangerous during daylight and with the sparse early sunday morning traffic, but still, having to walk on the road with no chance to evade uncomming cars made us somewhat nervous. We lifted our thumbs every time a car passed to our direction and it didn't take long to get a ride back to Laveno. At this point we were both really tired of hitch-hiking in the exhausting hot sun and although we could usually wash ourselves, we were dying to get a nice long shower. We both felt it was time for a rest day. We took ... read more

The next day we woke up in our tent on the school yard all sticky and dirty. Traveling in the sun without any shower make you very dirty and after some days of traveling like this it starts to feel quite uncomfortable. We heard from our last ride that there was supposed to be a lake nearby, so we first went there to swim. The lake belonged to a very expensive camping but we got up so early (the sun makes it impossible to sleep late) that the camping was only just waking up by the time that we had washed ourselves, our dishes and some of our clothes. We tried to hitchhike out of Tenero on an entrance to a normal road that was going to a highway. This was not very ideal because there ... read more
