Here are a few pics of central Santiago´s architecture. Where we were staying, Plaza De Armas, is the 'old´Spanish centre of the city. When Chile gained independence from the Spanish empire, the centre moved. Story for the heavy Spanish influence throught the city goes that the native Mapuche people never gave into the Spanish empire. As such, the Spaniards decided that in order to make the place feel a little more like home (and secure all the copper they wanted), it was just easier to kill them all, rather than enslave them. Charming. The Mapuche people are still fighting for independence from Chile today.
