Finally, I have gotten everything together to start our blog. We arrived safely, but I thought I had brought the wrong transformer. I hadn't, they have just changed their electical outlets to take two-pronged or three-pronged. This is one of the joys of having a personal guide. They can tell you about these things. We are staying at a great hotel very close to The Forbidden City, Tianemen Square and other places. Yesterday, we met our guide, Qing Ye, at 9:30 am and she stayed with us and ran us all over until 8:30pm. Her rate is $37.00 US a day. Not much of an hourly rate compared to home. So, today was the last day for the Chairman Mao Memorial Hall to be opened before thay start restoration on it for The 2008 Olympics. They ... read more

We had a nice cloudy, breezy Sunday afternoon. We went to Parliament Building on the Metro and then walked back beside the Danube. Found some more statues for Chrissy to discuss important things with. We hadn't a clue why the one with the very old man had a broken arch above him. It is no small irritant to be so illiterate when the explanation is there in Hungarian as plain as day. We walked a short way on the Chain Bridge which would shutter a little as cars and buses went across and scared Chrissy a bit. This is an amazing engineering feat. The chains that hold the bridge up are made just like a bicycle chain. Only the links are 8 to 10 feet long instead of 1/2 inch. Jim was quite enthralled with the ... read more

Today was another beautiful day although it is raining now at 9:00pm. We just got back from the best restaurant that we have gone to yet. It was called Spinoza's and in the Jewish section not too far from the hotel. Most of the people here in the middle of the city live in apartments and there is not even a little bit of grass anywhere. About a block from the hotel is a little playground for the neighborhood children and it has a security guard to let people in and out. We have seen what looks like daycare teachers taking small children to play during the day. It gets really busy in the late afternoon until dark so the children can get outside. We haven't seen a private residence the whole time we were here. ... read more

Today, Jim went early to the dentist and Chrissy and I went across the street and discovered this wonderful market. It certainly puts to shame the small Farmer's Market in Westerville. After the dentist, we wanted to go somewhere on the Metro and not get lost. Ikea was 6 stops away and we went and wandered in there for a couple of hours. It is so funny to see the exact same items here. The only real difference was on the electrical outlets. Then, back 6 stops to familiar territory. We then bought tickets for Folk Dancing at 8:00, but it was only 4:30. Not enough time to walk back to the hotel, but almost too much time to plan anything else. So, back on the Metro to go under the Danube and get close to ... read more

We just had a beautiful day on the Buda side today. We didn't realize that the smog was so bad on working days until we got up on the hill at the Royal Palace and tried to take pictures. There seem to be more cars than people here and each taxi driver seems to have trained as a rally driver before becoming a taxi driver. I only took a few pictures and my batteries ran out on the camera and, of course, the extra ones were back in the room, so we decided we'd come back Saturday or Sunday and get more pictures. We did find an English paper yesterday and get BBC and CNN news in English on the TV. So, Jim did have his crosswrd fix for the week. Our dental work is progressing ... read more

Sorry, we've been so busy now that we are actually going to the dentist's that I don't seem able to catch up. Sunday was the most perfect day. We did not get to church since we couldn't figure out any times. We did find a very large Lutheran church and a beautiful Catholic church nearby. In the afternoon, we took a boat tour on the Danube and it was so great. There is a small island just north of the downtown areas called Margaret Island and they let us go off the boat and walk around for an hour. It is a city park now, but was actually the home of a convent for St. Margaret whose father built it. It was bombed during the war and became a park for the city. Then, we went ... read more

We didn't realize until planning our trip that Budapest started as two cities divided by the Danube River. They were called Buda and Pest (pronounced Pesht). We are staying on the Pest side and did a little exploring. We took a three hour walk that seemed like about eight hours when we finally made it back to the hotel. Here are some pictures that we took on the way and NO, Chrissy was not allowed to go into the MacDonald's. The only American store we went into was Office Depot to get some paper and a pencil for Jim in case he finds a crossword puzzle in English. Big day planned for tomorrow. ... read more

Hello, everyone, We are off again. This time we are going to Budapest, Hungary for Jim to go to their famous dental clinics. Somehow, we are all able to have a 10 day holiday and still save about $4000.00 for the same work done here. So, we're off to see Budapest, enjoy the sights and save money. Glenn has given us his old laptop and we hope to be blogging as often as we can. We arrive in Budapest on Friday afternoon and have the weekend to catch up before Jim goes to the clinic. Talk to you soon. Shirley, Jim and Chrissy ... read more

Well, we arrived back home physically last Monday night at about 10:00 pm and are waiting to catch up mentally. We had a few hectic days but a nice Thanksgiving with Glenn at home. Our refrigerator died while we were gone and it was a challenge to get one delivered by Wednesday afternoon so we could go shopping and actually have some food inthe house. Our whole trip was wonderful. Last Saturday, we were on an hour's bush walk up in the foothills above Auckland called the Waitakere's. Chrissy did so well. We weren't walking quickly, but she was able to go the whole way. Our friend, Anne, took us and Chrissy did something that reminded her of when we were there and Anne just got all teary-eyed to think we were together again. Last Sunday, ... read more

Hello, everyone. Thank you for all of your comments and messages. This may be my last blog since we are going back to Auckland and I won't have access to a computer unless I find a internet cafe. Yesterday was perfect and we managed to not let Chrissy get too sunburned. We went on back roads as much as we could to Tauranga and Mt. Manganui. The farmers actually put their cows out with an electric fence to keep the sides of the roads mowed and we thought that was a novel idea. As we traveled over the Kaimai mountains, we could notice that we were out of milk cow country and getting more into sheep country. We also saw two deer farms where they raise the deer for exporting venison, etc. Then, we saw a ... read more
