It is Monday evening here in Nairobi and we have been having a wonderful time already. We had good flights on the trip. The taxi driver did have a van that picked us up, but he had never had an amazing amount of luggage to deal with. He was pretty game though and we arrived at the Mennonite Guest House in great shape. The weather was refreshingly cool and downright cold today. You can google the guest house and see pictures of it. The grounds are fantastic and the rooms old fashioned and very clean. It was so good to have Pastor Jon and Rob Howell waiting for us in the parking lot even though they still had their climbing beards on. They did so well on their climb and will tell that story themselves. Today ... read more

Hello again, everybody. The three Roes are off again on another wonderful trip. God is so gracious to us and has blessed us so abundantly in our many travels. We are off to Tanzania in just a few hours. We are going to be with friends that are missonaries close to Mwanza, Tanzania on Lake Victoria. They have established new churches, started a Bible Institute to train pastors and started an orphanage close by that Chrissy hopes to visit often. Three college students have been interning with the work and arrived in May to help coach soccer with some secondary school teams and to give soccer camps in some of the villages where small churches have been established. The parents of two of the boys will meet us in Nairobi and our pastor arrived last week ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Forbidden City March 14th 2007

Well, this was our last full day in China and we got up early and was at the Forbidden City about 15 minutes before it opened. There was still quite a crowd, but nothing like the other days we had tried to come. We didn't realize that the tourist tours would start this week and it is intimidating to see all these tour buses disgorging all these keen people to see everything possible in a short time. The smog is unbelievable compared to 2 weeks ago when we first got here. We are ready to get home and get back into real life again. The biggest three buildings of The Forbidden City ( the ones you see in movies) are closed and being restored for the 2008 Olympic Games, so that cut down quite a bit ... read more

Asia » China » Beijing » Great Wall of China March 12th 2007

Well, now we’ve been to The Great Wall and lived to tell about it. The first day we walked down from the hotel(about 3/4 of a mile), but decided we would wait until Saturday to actually climb it. In Badoling, the wall has been rebuilt for people to be able to walk on it. It is hard to imagine that they have 4500 miles of it. We could see some of it that had not been restored and it was quite overgrown and a lot of broken stones. Our hotel called “the Commune” was wonderful and tempted us into breaking a promise we had made to eat only Chinese food while we were here. One look at the western menu with New Zealand rack of Lamb and New Zealand Anchor butter and we forgot all about ... read more

I wanted to finish a little more about Qingdao and mention that we actually did fit in some business. It was hard, but, somehow, we managed. Jim had asked to see a machine actually making pipe. The next morning, Mr. Geng and the interpreter showed up at 8:00 and we were off for a 3 hour trip north to a town named Wei Pei to see a machine. The expressways are all toll roads and seemed to have no speed limits, so we cruised along at 160 to 180 km per hour. Mr. Geng was a good driver and Jim loves going fast. We drove through some farmland and then, apple orchards. They are both being turned into industrial sections. They take the farmers and build large apartment buildings, house them in there and then use ... read more

When we last blogged, we had no idea what was in store for us as we went to Qingdao to order our pipe-making machine. We were met at the airport by the Managing Director and interpreter and the most amazing time of Chinese hospitality that seemed to never stop. We arrived at 3:00 in the afternoon. They found that we had booked a hotel and promptly cancelled that since they had a special room for us to stay in close to the factory. That surprised us and pleased us quite a bit. Mr. Geng (pronounced gong) had a VW called a Santana that was about the size of a Jetta. He drove us everywhere that we went. While in Gingdao and Jaio Zhun, where the factory was. As we got to the factory, he immediately made ... read more

You know, I checked the temperature in Beijing for about a month before we came and it was always in the 50's, so we were quite pleased. However, to our dismay and the people here, winter has shown up again with these winds that make you feel even colder. We decided to try to go to the Temple of Heaven and The Forbidden City next week when we get back to Beijing. We decided to go to the Silk Market shops again. Jim bought a heavier coat that looks like he'll be able to brave the Artic and I bought a cashmere coat. It was black and I rellay wanted a camel colored one, so I was quite ruthless in my bartering and got it for about $30 US. After the market, we took a taxi ... read more

Well, Saturday started very gloomy and drizzly and continued throughout the day. It wasn't too cold though. We thought the damp weather would dampen the plans of the tour guide, but no, she felt inspired to show us even more. We first went to the zoo to see the Pandas who seem to like dampness. They have 8 or 9 and there were four that were pretty active. The funniest time was when a feeder brought one of them some carrots and he just leaned back like in a lounging chair and happily nibbled away on them. Then, whoosh, we were off to the Summer Palace which was so unbelievable in its grandeur and just plain bigness that it boggles the mind. They have a covered walkway that is over 700m long which is about 1/2 ... read more
