February 22nd 2012

We did plenty in the beautiful city of Hoi-an including a cookery school, boat trip (yes another one) and spent many hours wandering the market and supping Vietnamese coffee. Having spent a great few days with Adam and Amy we shared a car to Danang calling at the Marble Mountains, then caught the train to Hue. The train crawled through the mountains, hugging the coast of the South China Sea. Hue- another day another city...a fallen from granduer sort of place (used to be the capital). Spent a day touring the tombs and exploring some of the countryside and a morning touring the Citadel. A take or leave sort of place and for me leave it, apart from the really hip cafes full of grafitti and friendly folk. So we left Hue on the night sleeper ... read more

Had a wonderful stay in the resort town of Nha Trang, it appears everyone else in the world is coming here for holidays except us Brits! Had a day out at sea on a island tour that turned into an international karoke show complete with floating bar- a ice box in the sea! I love how everything is over sold in this great land of comrades- we have nothing on them in the capitalist west. Then we had a day at the hot mud spas and lounged all day in outdoor baths, waterfalls and 80c pools- thinking of England! We did the sleeper bus to Hoi An- left at 730pm and arived at 7am, a strange experience at first but will be doing it again soon. And here we are in the beautiful Hoi An- a ... read more

February 13th 2012

Well where are we up to? We left HCMC on Saturday morning after a great night sat drinking with a group of local lads, drinking 30p Saigons and comparing slang words. We soon realised that we all enjoyed the DJ Station nightclub in Bangkok! Dalat is a very pretty place, like an Alpine village around a lake. The outdoor night market is fantastic with over 100 stalls selling great food including roasted chicken feet and great cakes. What always hits me about the stall traders is how I judge them to have so little, let actually they also have so much- friendliness, passion and a real zest for their life. On the Sunday we joined a day tour and had a great day in part due to meeting some great fellow travellers, Louis from Paris (who ... read more

So we made it into Vietnam and starting our 2 ½ week tour in HCMC. We are staying in the backpacking area which is great, so bohemian, hip and home of the cheapest beer so far- 20p for a 500ml bottle of Siagon beer. The bars are on the pavements with hundreds of travellers sat on tiny plastic seats. Last nights’ entertainment was a local fie-eater finishing with an act involving swallowing a live snake to the the last few inches! Today we headed on a Browning wonder tour including the Reunification Palace. A communist style palace left intact from the 1975 invasion. The market is massive and full of every fake you can imagine and great food stalls. Crossing the road is an experience, you simply step out onto a manic 8 lane road and ... read more

Once again we are aboard the Mekong Express from Phnom Penh to HCMC (Saigon) in south Vietnam. We are enjoying a feast of local pop videos including one of young man mourning the tragic road accident involving his lifelong love- something that must pull at the hearts of all Cambodians given their driving skills and roads. Well let’s get the point, that is the blog entry from this great Kingdom. We have spent 2 nights in the Cambodia Kingdom capital. The city, like ye olde London sits on the grand River Tonle Sap and flanked to the south by a communist style boulevard. It is a manicured, litter free and people free area, yes the fair folk of Cambodia are not permitted to disturb the order. At one ends stands the Victory Monument in celebration of ... read more

‘Tis a splendid honour to be writing another blog entry to my fellow citizens of our great land (U.K.). I do hope this reaches you and your footmen in good times. For those who have experienced weather from icy parts, I wish a swift recovery for your damaged ankles and that any temporary disability has not made you too narky. Since my last prose we (Rich and Rob) have had the most marvellous experience in Siem Reap (Kingdom of Cambodia)- to the King of Cambodia I applaud your wonderful country and folk. We adopted (in fact hired) a personal chauffeur (in fact Tuk-Tuk driver) for 2 days. Our first day involved the tour of the splendid temples of Angkor. What a marvellous day of many sights and a joy to be a visitor. After many stops ... read more
