I am 23 years old (about to be 24) and am taking a three-month road trip all around the northwest, southwest, and south eastern US with my boyfriend, Joel. We are traveling in my Mom's giant Chevy conversion van, which she was gracious enough to let us borrow, :). We have been planning and saving for a long time, and are VERY excited about what is sure to be a life-changing experience!

From Canyon de Chelly we drove to Taos and Santa Fe where we shopped, ate lunch, and enjoyed the amazing scenery. We visited the Loretta Chapel in Santa Fe and the mysterious staircase built in the 1800's by an anonymous man who left without pay as mysteriously as he came. The staircase is somewhat of an engineering wonder. It has no obvious support and does 3 three-hundred and sixty degree twists. Very beautiful. We drove on, and arrived at my Dad's house in Fort Worth, TX two days before Thanksgiving. The morning we got up early to make the drive to my great Aunt Zena's ranch to spend Thanksgiving with the whole family. Thanksgiving at the ranch was great. We shot guns, rode four-wheelers and horses, played with my little cousins, cooked, and ate to our ... read more

The drive into Canyon de Chelly was not at all what we expected. Of the 100 or so miles it took to get into the reservation town of Chinle, only half were paved. The van does not have the best shocks either, so needless to say we were a bit jostled by the time we found the hotel. We stayed at The Thunderbird Lodge right around the corner from the Canyon de Chelly visitors center where we were supposed to meet our guide, Bobby Van Winkle, the next day. Before our scheduled rendezvous time we ran into town to grab a bite to eat, and strangely enough, sat down at the bar right next to Bobby! Once we all met each other and finished lunch, we headed to the Canyon. The drive was beautiful. The setting ... read more

Before the Grand Canyon, we drove up North to Bryce Canyon. It was absolutely stunning! We camped for a night before moving on. While we were there we drove to every overlook, and hiked a trail called the Navajo Loop that took us down into the canyon and around the other-worldly rock formations. But the best thing about it by far was the night sky. The stars were so clear the sky was almost white with them. We camped at Rainbow Point, around nine thousand feet. It was an amazing place. From there we drove down through Monument Valley, to the south entrance of Grand Canyon Nat Park. The Grand Canyon was everything we expected it to be. It was grand! Again, we drove from overlook to overlook, took pictures, and admired the geological wonder. We ... read more

We had a wonderful time in Las Vegas. We stayed at the Luxor Hotel and Casino for three nights, right on the strip. The strip (Las Vegas Blvd) was just like in the movies - big, bright, and always going going going. It was most impressive at night. At any time of day people were in the casinos drinking, eating, and gambling. We wandered in and out of all the major hotel and casinos; admiring their decor and grandeur. The MGM Grand had an exotic animal exhibit, and we spent one afternoon viewing the magnificent lions, tigers, and dolphins. The Bellagio was the nicest. In the lobby then have a skylight covered in multi-colored glass flowers. Our favorite part of town turned out to be Old Vegas, where we spent most of our time. The Casino's ... read more

Sorry it has taken us SO long to update. We are going to pile them on today. Anyway, from the coast we turned inland. Our first stop was the Sequoia National Forest, still in California. It is like the Redwood Forest, but full of giant Sequoia trees, which were just as impressive. It just so happens that this is where the LARGEST TREE IN THE WORLD is!! It is a red sequoia named The General Sherman Tree; 53,000 cubic feet, with a circumference of 160 feet. The hike down to it was over a mile long and steep, which was challenging at 8,000 feet! Even more impressive than the tree however, were the tarantulas! It was mating season in the park, and the male brown tarantulas were out walking around, looking for females. We saw one ... read more

*** Hello everyone!! Just a helpful hint for those enjoying the blog - there is more than one page to each of them. Only the first has text; the others have many more photos. So, be sure to check them out! *** After we left the condo in Stinson Beach, we went up the coast to Point Reyes to see the lighthouse. From there we drove south to Monterey, California. We had just started reading John Steinbeck's novel, "Cannery Row", and we were excited to see it in person. Monterey is a lovely beach town. We browsed the shops on the boardwalk, walked around Cannery Row, and spent the afternoon in the renowned Monterey Aquarium. That night, we camped at an overlook right on the beach. When high tide came up in the morning the waves ... read more

We arrived in Redwood territory on October 28th, and drove down Highway 101 to the visitors center, where we picked up a map and some information on the different areas of redwoods and trails in the area. The first trail we hiked was the Lady Bird Trail, on the outskirts of the Redwood National Forest. It took us through some of the oldest redwoods in the area, although not the biggest. We explored, climbed, and took pictures on the 2-mile hike. They are absolutely spectacular trees. From there we headed further down Hwy 101 to The Avenue of the Giants. It is a scenic highway that runs adjacent to Hwy 101 and goes by all the tourist stops and the largest, most impressive trees. We stopped at Founders Nature Trail to explore and hike a little ... read more

We have been on the move!! After Missoula, MT we headed Northwest toward Seattle. We were going to make it a two day drive, but felt so good we just drove on through and pulled into Seattle around nine. We went straight to the Space Needle to soak up Seattle in all it's magnificence, and enjoy a bite to eat. It was beautiful! The Needle is 520 feet high, and rotates so as you sit you slowly get a 360 degree view of Seattle. After it closed, we drove to the outskirts of town and got a room for the night. The next morning we drove back into downtown and found easy parking right across the street from the Pike Place Market. We spent most of the morning wandering around admiring lively and colorful the pastry ... read more

On Monday, Ariel and I repacked the van and left Boulder, heading for Yellowstone. The drive took us through a few small, rural towns. I swear we saw more horses than people. Wyoming landscape is unreal. You can easily trick yourself into thinking you are on a different planet. Overcast skies and miles of frozen 'tundra'. No vegetation other than small gray shrubs. Parts of the drive where down-right eerie. The sun went down before we reached the park so we stopped in a little town in Wyoming called Lander. We woke up at dawn and finished the drive to The Grand Tetons National Park. The Tetons where breathtaking. We stopped for awhile to snap some pictures and then headed on to Yellowstone. We reached the south entrance of Yellowstone and drove around the western geothermal ... read more

Our time at Jeanies house in Boulder has been absolutely wonderful. The first weekend we were up here Pierce and Megan came up Friday night and we cooked a big dinner, and Saturday morning drove out to the small town of Nederland back in the mountains. There was somewhere between 6 and 8 inches of snow on the ground when we woke up that morning and the drive through the mountain passes was breathtaking. During the week we spent most of our time relaxing at the house and enjoying the scenery and animals of Boulder. There is a family of deer that live at the bottom of the mountain and we saw them every time we drove to town. They are so used to people and cars that they walk right by you; literally so close ... read more
