This past weekend, we decided to take it a bit easier with regards to sightseeing. My sister had a couple of papers due early this week, so she wanted to be able to do some homework. Saturday we went to the grocery store. Okay, that's not sightseeing, but it was a good accomplishment for us! Later that day, we went to Basildon Park House. It's just outside of Reading, so it was easy to get to. Very beautiful place. Unfortunately, there is scaffolding all around the exterior because they are cleaning the stonework. We were disappointed. This house was also used to film some of the 2005 version of Pride & Prejudice. For those of you who know me well, I prefer the BBC version with Colin Firth. But it was cool to see this. Karen ... read more

Wow, I realize that it has been a long time since I posted. However, I made no promises when I started this! I need to go back to over a month ago - my sister arrived on Sept 10. That was really exciting for me! I picked her up at the airport and dropper her at our older brother’s, where she was going to spend the weekend getting over jet lag. I drove over on Saturday and then she and I took the tube into London. We had made plans to tour the State Rooms at Buckingham Palace since they are only open during August and September. We knew it wouldn’t take all day, so we had been searching for something else to do. While trying to find a gluten-free place to have lunch (my sister ... read more

This past weekend was a bank holiday weekend here in the UK. This means we had Monday off from work. It was a nice break for me. I decided to do a lot of sightseeing and even picked out a nice bed & breakfast so I could have more time for sights. I ended up spending my time mainly in Kent and a little bit in East Sussex (which is in the south east of England). I started out Saturday morning by going to Hever Castle. This castle was the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the 2nd wife of King Henry VIII (she was beheaded by him). The castle then went through a bunch of different owners including William Waldorf Astor at the beginning of the 20th century. He was responsible for a lot of the ... read more

Today my sister informed me that my blog has been somewhat boring lately. I pointed out that this was due to me being sick and therefore, my LIFE had been somewhat boring. So, to make up for that, I can now say that I was able to do some sightseeing this past weekend. Saturday, I went to Windsor Castle. I had a finite amount of time because I needed to be at my brother's around 5:00 PM. When I arrived in Windsor, there was a LOT of traffic! There were quite a few people who had decided to visit Windsor that day. I was finally able to make it to some parking fairly close to the castle. I walked over to the Admissions and stood in line (or queued). Once I finally got in, I picked ... read more

No, I haven't forgotten about the blog. I have been sick the last 2 weeks, so I haven't done anything (it was the flu and it has taken some time to get over it). I thought I was going to feel well enough to get out this past weekend, but that didn't work. I'm hoping to get out this coming weekend. On another note, I want to wish my sister a very happy birthday. And I want to wish my parents a very happy anniversary. Yes, both events are today! :D... read more

I have decided that one of the best things about being in England right now is the close proximity of my brother and his family. I have been able to spend the day with them each of the two weekends that I have been here. It has been wonderful! I am only an hour away by car. I have never lived this closely to them, even in the USA. This past weekend, I was able to help them just after they moved. They had done a great job of settling into the new place in only 24 hours. But I got to watch the boys for awhile as they continued to unpack and I also helped my brother clean the old place. I look forward to more time with them during my time here. As an ... read more

This morning, I decided to not use the GPS to get to work. I was fairly confident I could find my way even though I wasn't 100% sure about all of the roundabouts. However, I was able to make it without any incidents! Yeah! I told my manager that this morning and he asked if I had been adventurous enough to go a different route. Maybe next week. :-) I have to tell a story on myself. Last week, I had been pretty proud of myself since I had managed to get into the car on the correct side each and every time. Well, that came to an abrupt halt on Friday. I went to the grocery store after work on Friday (not a good idea, by the way, too crowded). By the time I walked ... read more

Here are the promised pictures of my flat! Today, I also learned how to use the washer/dryer combo as well as the oven. I also picked up a few things for the flat, like a clothes hamper and some hooks to hang things on in the bathroom. Not a very exciting day, but a necessary one. Tomorrow I am heading to London to spend the day with my brother and his family.... read more

Yes, it might seem silly, but I am excited about a mirror. When I arrived at my flat, there was no mirror over the sink in the bathroom, which makes it difficult to do hair and makeup. I mentioned this at the office and the lady who had arranged everything for me put in a request to the management company. At first, they weren't too keen on the idea because they were afraid they would have to drill into the tile. But I came home yesterday to find a small mirror above the sink! It was SO much easier to get ready this morning. :-) I'm also happy to report that my GPS is now working, thanks to our Help Desk guy. He figured out that it was not picking up the satellites because it was ... read more
