Rachael Grimmett

Hello! My name is Rachael, I'm 22 and I live in the south of England. I love travelling, and have done so for as long as I can remember. I also love history, culture, music and eating and these is what inspires me when thinking about where to visit. I hope to go away more often, as the bank account allows(!) and keep a record of my experiences (so when I'm old and senile I have a record of the good things I got up to!). I recently went on a trip to Edinburgh, my very first time all alone! :P I hope to write up the journal I kept while I was away asap! :D

I’ve just got back from spending the whole afternoon visiting the Scott Monument, Scotland’s National Gallery and St Giles Cathedral! To get to the top of the Scott Monument there’s a series of stairs cases that get thinner and thinner as they ascend, and by the time I got to the top my sides were touching the wall and the edge of the stairs, and I had to squeeze through the gap to get out on to the balcony! In the middle of the monument is a sort of gallery, where visitors can learn about Sir Walter Scott, who the monument was made for (by George Meikle Kemp, finished in 1844). While I was at the top, there was quite a few people, and I didn’t want to keep having to squeeze past them to walk ... read more

I took a walk along the Royal Mile this morning, to find somewhere to have breakfast. I saw a place that did Scottish Breakfasts, but the only thing that seemed to make it different to an English Breakfast was the addition of Haggis, which I had yesterday, so I decided to look for something else. I walked to the “bottom” of the Royal Mile to Holywood Palace, the Queens Official Residence in Scotland, then back up a bit to where I came across “Cafe Truva Royal”, a Turkish restaurant. It looked really nice and cosy from across the street, so I decided to take a look. The first thing I saw when I looked in the window was Turkish sweets, truffles, cakes, desserts, and OMG, just lots of sugary goodness! I wish I could have taken ... read more

I went down to the bar in the hostel last night and I had a few drinks and an awesome “southern fried chicken” style burger, and it was LUSH! It was really crispy but soft at the same time, and by the time I finished it I had to force feed myself the chips and coleslaw that came with it! My stomach hurt after! ;) They had something called "Vodka Blue" or something similar on offer, and I wasn't sure what would go well with it, so I asked the bartender who was a really nice Australian (I believe!) lady and she mixed it with some fruit juice that I can't for the life of me remember what kind! >.... read more

I’ve just got back from Greyfriars Church, where I took pictures of the graves of John Gray, Greyfriars Bobby and James Brown. Bobby was a skye terrier dog and he belonged to a man named John Grey who was a shepherd. When John Grey suddenly died of tuberculosis, at first Bobby wouldn’t let anyone near his body. A small funeral was arranged and as John Grey’s body was taken to the graveyard, Bobby followed behind, distraught at losing his friend. After the funeral was over, Bobby stayed behind and slept on John Grey’s grave. James Brown, the Sexton (a person who looks after a church and its graveyard), spotted Bobby at the grave, and at first he chased him away whenever he saw him there, but eventually he took pity and began feeding and looking after ... read more

I have successfully checked-in to my hostel! It’s called Smartcityhostels and it’s very much like a hotel with electric keys and everything! I found it on www.hostelworld.com while looking for a hostel that provided private rooms. At the time I was looking, it was the only hostel that seemed to cater for people that wanted to have a room for themselves. I'm sure there are others, but they must have been fully booked :( I don't mind sharing with other people but I thought being a girl, and on my own, it probably wouldn't be a smart/safe idea to share a room with strangers! The room I have is very nice, with a big bunk bed (the bottom bigger bed could easily sleep three people!), cupboard and a desk (that I'll use to write up what ... read more

I've just managed to find my way to Edinburgh castle, and man the roads up to it were STEEP! I saw the castle first from the airport transfer bus and wow. Incredible! It towers over the city looking very defensive and powerful (kinda the aim at the time it was built!) but looking at it in modern-day eyes (i.e. as a tourist destination) it’s very beautiful too. The first picture is the view I saw as I walked towards the castle ---> I bought an audio guide (£3.50 adult, at the time) when I bought my ticket online (£14 adult, at the time), and that was a good idea. They’re more informative than what’s written on the stone flag things attached to the walls around the castle, and they give you a good route to follow ... read more

I’m on a transfer bus from Edinburgh Airport to Waverley Train Station in central Edinburgh, the bus stops for which are located directly outside the airport. Tickets can be bought from the nice people in the booths or directly from the bus driver, and there are options for either a single ticket or a return ticket that saves you around £1 on the overall price (than if you just bought two single tickets). I chose a single, because the chances of me being able to keep hold of a little ticket for four days aren’t very high! The seats on this bus are LUSH! The seats look like really expensive leather, the kind you find in a sports car or Ferrari or something! Apparently this service is provided by Lothian Buses. Go Lothian Buses!! A very ... read more

I’ve stopped attempting to do relaxing breathing exercises to calm me down as the plane shoots off into the sky, and have decided to try to focus on writing in my diary instead! Oh hello turbulence! I thought the plane was quite high up until I looked up and out the window and noticed there were two planes very high above us. Wow. I wonder where they’re going and how I’d feel if I was on either of those planes! I’m nervous enough being this high! I managed to blag myself a window seat while some bloke was stood in an air hostess’ view! Win! That meant I was able to wave goodbye to my Mum, Dad and brother which was proper good! As scared as I am, looking out the window is actually helping! I’m ... read more
