Happy New Year Wishing everyone a Happy 2009. My new year’s was spent in Toronto I didn’t really get up to anything special in Toronto - the winter holidays meant that the city come to a bit of a stand still when it comes to music, festivals, galleries and the like for which the city has a plethora of during warmer months. My first night was a ‘pub crawl’ that ended up comprising of myself and two guys and a girl from the hostel (all from Nova Scotia in Canada) going for a few beers. The night ended far later than I had planned but we had a good time and it was good to make some new friends on my first night. The next day I made use of the beautiful weather (very cold but ... read more

and indeed it was! I hope you all had a nice Christmas too : -) My second Christmas away from home - a little sad but I still managed to have some fun (although not as much fun as my super-special time in Copenhagen last Christmas. Spending Christmas eve at the hostel with new friends was fun and helped me to forget (just a little bit) that I missed my family and friends. Speaking of hostels, whilst there are good ones there are also bad ones and my New York hostel was one of them … Arriving in New York after a horror 24+ hour journey from Vancouver (partly my fault but mostly due to plane, bus and train delays due to snow storms), all I wanted was a hot shower and a comfy bed … ... read more

The end of Vancouver (Part 1) and wow has it been snowing! I woke to my last Sunday morning to several cm of snow and with temperatures remaining below 0’c all week (and dipping as low as -10’c I think), and some extra mid-week snow, Vancouver has been totally transformed into a Winter Wonderland. The only thing is … after one week of snow I’m already sick ok it - I still find it pretty but having to be super careful walking to work (that ice is damn slippery - yep I fell flat on my bum at least once!) and the extra cold temperatures do kinda suck. On the bright side, it hasn’t rained much and there have been quite a few, cold but sunny days. The rest of the month I have been in ... read more

Well of course it was Halloween recently and although the Canucks don't go as crazy as the Yanks when it comes to all thinks All Hallow's Eve it is definitely a much bigger deal than it is in Australia. Lots of shops in the yuppie Yaletown area took part in an organised Trick or Treat event for the kids and of course throughout the suburbs kids were trickin' and or a treatin' during the night - my bowl of sweets definitely got eaten pretty quickly (and not by me!). I had been invited to a friend's Halloween party (a kiwi guy and aussie girls I'd met at a festival in Seattle back in July) so the night before it was a mad dash to find a costume to fit with their 'Dress for Success' theme. Somehow ... read more

Well I’ve had another awesome few weeks in North America. Highlight of the past fortnight was a trip to Seattle and Portland to see Sigur Ros, my ‘weird Icelandic band’. Taking my gig addiction to a new level, I travelled down to Seattle on Saturday morning and spent a day and a half sight seeing and then on Sunday night it was the first of three Sigur Ros concerts, in three nights in three cities. The morning after the Seattle concert I then headed to Portland for the second concert and early the morning after that it was a full day’s travel back to Vancouver via Seattle for the third concert. Even I thought I was crazy for undertaking all this travel just to see a band but it was totally worth it. The first night ... read more

Last weekend I went to San Francisco for a four day holiday and, of course, a music festival. Of all the US cities, SF and NY are the only ones that have ever had any great appeal for my, NY I totally loved on my trip four years ago (almost to the day!) and so can’t wait to return for Xmas this year and although SF wasn’t the alternative/hippie loveland I thought it would be (the city is too big a city for that) I still had a great time. I arrived early Saturday morning (after leaving Vancouver the night before and spending the night at Seattle airport) and headed straight to my hostel and was lucky to be able check in early, dump my bags and have a much needed shower. It was then time ... read more

Nothing overly interesting or exciting to report since my last blog so I thought I’d pass on a few random thoughts on Vancouver. Weather - Vancouver is jokingly referred to as Raincouver but so far things have been pretty good, there have been a few wet days but mostly fantastic weather. The city - as I cross over the bridge on my daily walk to work I am constantly reminded of how damn lucky I am to be living here, the views of the bay area with the mountains in the background are just fantastic. Homelessness - there’s lots of it here and can be found on most street corners and then you get to ‘East Hastings’ and its just crazy with a couple hundred homeless people lining the streets. The crazy thing is that the ... read more

Hello again all! Well I started a new job the other day. As much as I enjoyed my time at Vancouver Coastal Health, it wasn’t really for me. The work environment was a little different to what I’m used to and ultimately things weren’t busy enough to keep me occupied. So totally out of the blue I got offered a job at Davis LLP, a national law firm with its head office in Vancouver. Doing legal accounting like I did at Mallesons, my job will be to relieve for staff on leave or otherwise occupied with the roll out of their new accounting system. My first two weeks will be in conflicts and matter opening - no laughing Rose! Actually you would love their conflict search process, one search and you can pick up all the ... read more

Yet another awesome trip with Moose over the weekend, this time our driver was a bit of a loser but the rest of us on the bus were pretty cool. Made really good friends with a Sadie and Joe, a young couple from Manchester who are into similar music to me (Sadie is also in a band which I will have to get into) so we had fun talking about bands and playing our favourite songs to each other. Sadie also lived near me and Joe worked at the vegetarian cafe and a pub near me so chances are we'd actually run into each other before. My trip was a strange one, normally it is part of a seven day plus round trip to Banff, Jasper etc but due to work commitments I could only go ... read more

Whistler and Seattle - another bus two weeks in North America So the other weekend I went to Whistler on another one of the Moose tours and had an absolutely awesome time - Canada just keeps getting better and better!!! A popular ski resort in winter (in the top 5 in the world apparently) but still hugely popular in the summer months with some limited skiing and boarding opportunities, amazing hiking trails and, for the more adventurous, some hardcore mountain bike trails. Whistler will also be the home to a lot of the sledding and skiing events for the 2010 Winter Olympics and well if things keep going good in Canada I could very easily arrange it so I'm still here by then - now that would be cool! On the way up (the drive takes ... read more
