We went to Napier, an art deco town on the East coast of North Island. It was re-built in art deco style in the 1930s following a big earthquake. There are still earthquakes happening here all the time. We went to Opossum World where they make very expensive jumpers and socks from possum fur. "We're on the road again..."!... read more

We went to the Skyline luge where we had a gondola ride up the mountain. We then got to luge on a 2km track which was great fun. In the afternoon we went to Te Puia, a Maori cultural centre where we saw bubbling mud pools and a geyser that shot boiling water 15m high. There was also a cooking pool where the water was nearly boiling all the time and they used to use this for cooking their food. We then drove on to Lake Taupo and stayed at a site which had thermal swimming pools.... read more

Finally some sun!We bought body boards so we could make the most of the surf. The waves were massive, 5 to 6 feet. The water was clear, the sky was blue and the sand was hot hot hot! The next day we went to see "Marths's Mine", a gold mine that used to be underground tunnels but is now a big open cast mine. When they have finished mining they will fill it up with water to make a swimming/boating lake, it will take many years to fill.... read more

North America » United States » Nevada » Las Vegas January 5th 2011

To get here we had to go through a mountain pass, Meg didn't like it because it made her ears pop. There had been some snow (not as much as back at home) but they don't normally have any snow around here, the highest point was about 5000ft. The hotels in Vegas are amazing. We're staying in the Excalibur which is like a fairy tale castle (we're on floor 25 out of 37) and from our window we can see the Luxor which is shaped like a pyramid.... read more

We flew into Los Angeles and it was raining heavily. We were quite unlucky because it hardly ever rains in California! We did a tour of Hollywood and Beverly Hills where all the movie stars live. The houses were nice but we think we are very lucky to live in the Cotswolds. We went shopping on Rodeo Drive where a shirt costs $700 and dad wanted a watch but mum said no because it was $20,000!... read more
