And so I find myself 12 days into our long voyage across the Pacific Ocean. 12 days may not seem long. Let me assure you…….it is. The first few days were rough and I mean this in every sense of the word. Seas were hitting our bow head on. The motion of this front to back bobbing and constant throwing of your body sent most of us into a sea-sick fury. Running for our beds and Dramamine to sleep off the nausea and hoping to wake to a calmer swell. As the hours faded into days, the seas eventually cooled and we set comfort into our daily routines while cruising the big blue. We sit navigational watch 8 hours a day. A simple task such as grocery shopping can become an adventure. As we anchor up in Baltra, a small volcanic island within the Galapagos chain, we are aware of our long voyage ahead. We have 2 days in the Galapagos and then a 15 day trek to the Marquesas. In preparation for the days ahead at sea the chef, chief stewardess and myself need to provision for the trip. And so our day begins…. We board our 19-foot inflatable tender and take a 20 minute boat ride to the largest of the islands in the chain, Santa Cruz. On the way over we pass sea lions brisking the water and pelicans dive-bombing for their breakfast feast. We find a small, desolate dock and jump off. Life is crazy. As mundane as any life can become, that life can also change just as quickly. It can become altered, wildly different than before or ever imagined. 5 years ago if someone sat in front of me and told me what my next five years would entail; I would have never believed them. There are people like me, people like us, of whom I consider few among many that dream forever and those dreams naturally shape our lifeline in ways we had only envisioned. I grew up in a family that taught me no goal or dream is too big, an innocence I hope to never lose but often times find my faith in that ideology to be tested.
