I really was going to write this on the night but am instead writing it the following day with the result I almost cannot remember what the details were. However the general details always involve virtually setting an alarm for 9:30 AM to have a quick shower before heading up for the breakfast deadline at 10 AM. Being a Sunday there were more people who were having it late (completely different story at the same time on Monday -- only a very few at that hour). Anyway with one thing and another, despite knowing that the sun sets at around 4:45 PM, it was really only at about 2 PM that I got going. I have really only had a very general idea of what I am doing and that usually involves picking an area to ... read more

Well welcome to Shanghai. But first of course I had to get here, which involved the "torture" of 10 hours or so in Qantas business class, which of course I could only wish on myself on frequent flyer points (actually the only way to get up there, as economy was not available). Anyway I did my best to try three of the four wines available, along with a Para port and a sweet white wine. Not to mention a few hours in relatively total recline, and the strangely apposite movie, as it was a Chinese -- Australian coproduction, "33 postcards" - about a young female Chinese orphan who is in a choir but manages to visit out of the blue in Sydney her long-time sponsor, who despite a fancy postcard life of living in a beach ... read more

Europe » Hungary » Central Hungary » Budapest July 10th 2011

This is largely written on the Finnair flight from Budapest to Helsinki where I hope/know it will be cooler than the 33-34 in Hungary! There is just one final piece of business in Krakow. I did get up to the Royal/Wawel Castle but only did the grounds/cathedral, which are free. There was a separate charge for other things like the Crown jewels etc but as it was 4pm bit late in the day for that and I did not really have the time. As the LP guide is old (pre-2009) there was no mention of something that I only found out from the In Your Pocket guide at the hotel – namely the existence of the Enamel Factory/Oscar Schindler museum. It rates it as essential so thought I better had. Even better it was open until ... read more

Warning – some visual or other content in this post may cause concern to some– the A* word in title does warn you…. This is written on 7 July in the mid-afternoon sitting at my comfortable 4 star hotel desk, and I don’t really care about dashing around this no doubt wonderful city right at the minute. Mostly cos there are still 6 ½ hrs of daylight anyway and I am not scheduling any important museums etc, that I know of anyway, cos I haven’t really done any reading etc. Does this sound like travel fatigue? Yes, 37 days on the road and a city change almost every 2nd night usually means you can almost barely remember where you have been. There is also physical tiredness of a certain lack of sleep – late nite blogging ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic July 4th 2011

In the remaining few days left I had decided that I would make a flying visit to Olomouc (pron. Olla-moats) back in the Czech republic cos the LP guidebook said it was very underrated and a compact version of Prague etc. Well for once I would have to toally agree and it was totally worth the visit. They said worth 2 days but in the interests of onward progress had to trim this to 1 night and effectively almost 24 hrs from time of arrival to leaving. Trouble is rain can dampen things down a bit. It was sunny in Bratislava in the morning as I dashed off to get a tram to get to the station. I was told I had left a “bottle” in the room as I left the key - at the ... read more

I forgot that I had taken some snaps on the small camera of the trip down the Donau/Danube on that Twin City Liner cat or whatever it is called. Somewhat like my pictures of the Rhine last year if you remember in terms of the odd riverside rocky castle etc. And even though I got to Bratislava tp spend two nights there, with the view to getting around to see a bit, this did not really prove the case in the end. Woke up and it was raining and as I could look down on the roof 3 floors below I could tell how wet it was. So decided at almost 4pm (rain can ruin the best of holidays) that best thing to do was stay dry and go to the Slovakian National Gallery next door. ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna July 2nd 2011

This is somewhat unusually a morning blog at 11-ish – having had breakfast in Bratislava and the day outside is pretty grey and coolish (17 max.) and forecast for showers (maybe). Further east where I am going tomorrow it is even cooler – like 14 – but will warm up from Monday onwards so that is OK. I was up VERY late in Vienna forming some impressions of where I was going next and booking this hotel, the 4 star Hotel Devin right beside the Danube (but at my price (63E which was cheapest in town with this location) no doubt given a back view room, not a (premium) river view). Anyway it is the first single room I have stayed in a hotel that is actually a “single” bed and not a double. Did not ... read more

Europe » Austria » Vienna July 1st 2011

Earnest readers may well recall that the whole purpose of a (revisit) to Vienna (I was here in a cold and wet October 2010) was to catch a concert by my guitar hero Richard Thompson last night, 30 June, at the WUK in Vienna (which as I am sure you can guess is the “Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus”). No wuckers indeed. This required leaving Zagreb at 7.25am on the only direct train to Vienna. Interesting that it comes up from Split, but there is an hour layover in Zagreb before it leaves again – given the performance of Balkan railways in general, hardly surprising I would suggest! Anyway it was timetabled into Vienna at 13.59 and was maybe a minute early. From there to my hotel the Furst Metternich, which is just off Maria Hilfer strasse, which ... read more

29 June – Banja Luka to Zagreb – had a late breakfast (fell asleep with light on and did not catch up with blogs). The hotel was rare one that had decent yellow corn bread as well as boring non-crisp crust white bread in the basket. Had 3 hours to kill and not a lot to see touristically. So ended up in the large market in the basement of this new building. This was full of curtained stalls selling kids clothes, T-shirts and jeans and lots of padded bras it seemed, not that I think that the girls here need em at all. Decided that I might convert my last remaining 15 Bosnian marks, other than train fare, into a T-shirt. The veges were all so cheap and local of course – an Aussie $ is ... read more

28 June – Sarajevo to Banja Luka – wretched 7 hour (rather than 5) train trip to Banja Luka. The train came thru to Sarajoveo having started in Ploce – I got a cab down there on assumption it might be on time (ha!). At one point we were just stopped for an hour without moving – CityRail eat your heart out! I had emailed the Hotel Vila Vrbas in Banja Luka about availability and price. They had emailed back that room available for 84 marks and “Blackmail includes breakfast” – were they confusing price and blackmail there?? But they did at least take Mastercard. Decided to just take a chance on finding something as Banja Luka is not exactly a hotel hub. By the time I got there (late at 8pm – see above) they ... read more
