| 6th May 2006 Solange | Khazaana.. - From: A taste of France in India Anne was right about Khazaana. A Must visit place. And Manju was a wonderful hostess. The shopping was very good, and I picked up loads of Silver Jewellery. I definitely recommend it to everyone visiting pondicherry... |
| 16th February 2006 Anne | great shopping.. - From: A taste of France in India In Pondicherry, you should try KHAZAANA. it is a quaint shop run by a pretty lady called Manju. She stocks beautiful cotton dresses - ideal for the heat of India - and also great items for gifts for your friends back home. I had a wonderful time shopping for Cotton Tops, Skirts, Salwar Suits (The simple Pant - suit most ladies in India wear) Bedcovers, Table cloths, Napkins, and the most beautiful silver Jewellery. Ask Manju for her Masala tea (Divine!) and she will happily oblige. Her prices are the most reasonable I have come across in this town. Definitely not to be missed. Khazaana can be found at 338, Mahatma Gandhi Road, 1st floor. Tel. 2338948. email khazaanapondy@gmail.com. |
| 2nd October 2005 moorepants | you are very welcome - From: Silkworms in the car Your town was a very pleasant village with very nice people. We really enjoyed the stay there. By the way, my travel companion, Bean, lives in Chicago now. I can give you his contact information if you would like to meet with him. You two could talk about India and your hometown. That is, if you live there. |
| 2nd October 2005 moorepants | reply to the aurovillian - From: An experiment in human unity No, I didn't see the whole picture and I didn't visit the youth center. Although I did speak to several Aurovillians. Most who had been there quite a while. The ones we spoke to may have been the minority but they were generally frustrated with how the community functioned. |
| 30th September 2005 Samantha | Well, well, well - From: An experiment in human unity Hey there. I'm an aurovillian. I left for a year last March, but I guess i must have been there around the same time as you. You obviously didn't really see the whole picture. Did you visit our Youth Centre or any of the other sites of youth interest? Where you from anyway? Samx |
| 16th September 2005 Prasad Indore | just be watchful - From: Goodbye India Hi, It is nice to read your blog. but a word abot juice and kulfi. Here, in India you have to be a bit careful specially during summer and rainy seasons regarding the water / related items you take. It is better to go for a slightly organized hotels/juice bars rather than the ones on street ( they need not be ***** ones but normal one will serve reasonably clean water/juice). Have fun next time! |

| 13th June 2005 anonymous | IAS Topper - From: Foooootball in the village IAS Topper is Manish Kumar IIM, Lucknow. Date:12/05/2005 URL: http://www.thehindu.com/2005/05/12/stories/2005051212651300.htm -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Front Page Railway official from Tamil Nadu is IAS topper Staff Reporter NEW DELHI: Railway traffic service official Srinivasan Nagarajan has bagged the top spot in the Union Public Service Commission Civil Services (Main) Examination. The results were announced here on Wednesday. In all, 422 candidates, including 67 women, have been recommended for appointment. While the top 20 includes six women, 193 candidates have been selected from the general category, including three physically challenged persons, 118 from Other Backward Classes, 64 from Scheduled Castes and 47 from the Scheduled Tribes category. The number of vacancies reported by the Government for IAS, IFS and IPS is 91, 20 and 88, for the Central Services Group `A' 235 and the Central Services Group `B' 19. It may have been his fourth and last attempt but for Tirunelveli-based Mr. Nagarajan, it could not have ended on a better note. A B.Tech from BITS Pilani, he had sociology and geography as options. Professionals have clearly scored, with the top 10 comprising an engineer, two doctors and an IIM graduate. Basant Garg and Gaurav Uppal are both doctors and hold the second and third ranks this year. Basant has cleared it in his first attempt. Manish Kumar, ranked fifth, is an IIM graduate. He had to choose between a New York posting with handsome salary and one that would help him serve his own people. "I decided to take the UPSC exam when I got the offer for a job in New York. Although the money was great, I wanted to do something here. I was not sure if coming back would be easy once I went there, so I decided to write the exam instead. It is my third attempt but I am glad to have finally made it," he said. Interestingly, at least six of the top 10 were trained at an institute here. "We were confident of having our students in the top 10 but six of them, including the top three, was completely unexpected. It has been a brilliant year for us," said Sri Rangam, the man behind the Delhi branch of Sri Ram Institute. © Copyright 2000 - 2005 The Hindu - Alok Ranjan |

| 28th January 2005 anonymous | Questions. - From: The Taj, Citar Gurus, and Street Dancing Do the children of India have equivalents of Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy and such? If so, do they grow out of these touching beliefs at about the same age as us Anglo-Saxons? In your posts, moorepants, there has been an obvious prominence of religious leaning, have you noticed any sort of resentment towards science and reason, or do the two stand harmoniously astride a hashish smoking, sitar playing, taj mahal building elephant that is standing on one foot and has 4 too many arms? Also, have you noticed the role of social anxiety in the country? or perhaps there is less of the feeling of quiet desperation that dominates in the US? Sure there are shy people, but are there people who are nervous and stand back and have to persuade themselves to do the simplest things like ask to use the bathroom? Does everyone pee outside? Are there trained monkeys? Is there a trained monkey liberation movement? Have you attended and danced at a ceremonius abortion? - John S. |
