Thoughts about.....The Firetruck
To say I have enjoyed your postings and thoughtful/intelligent/empathetic/funny/humble/slightly sarcastic(!) insights is an UNDERSTATEMENT. It has been a joy to be included, even as a bystander, in your experiences. I have been blessed with bystander status for the last 16 years. I was there for the pre-getting on the firetruck years! I always knew - and frequently expressed the sure knowledge - that you would make it on the firetruck. I just didn't realize you would OWN it when you were done. Nice job. All my love, Ms. Donna

I have enjoyed living vicariously through you for the past few months and I cannot to have similar experiences of my own. I came across a comic that made me think of you, enjoy: http://xkcd.com/77/

never doubted you
remember our conversation on the phone? every time i start to doubt myself about what i'll be doing in the fall, i think of the things you've said, but more importantly what you've done in the past 2.5 months. so i think i have a "thanks to you" in order. 1. london is one of my favorites, if not my absolute favorite - been there twice, would go back innumerable times - in the words of mark j ripple - lets go. 2. if there is any way i can afford going with you next summer and i wouldn't be that little kid sister thing, count me in. and dont underestimate my ability to rough it. 3. i can already see some difference. : ) it'll be nice to have you home. (even if you're not ready to be)

All I can say is WOW! What a great post, and what a great person you've become.

vive l'italia!
i forgot to ask you this when you called, do me a favor - whenever you use an italian word (which i would guess would be - grazie, prego, scusi, etc.), you must, and i mean MUST exaggerate the italian accent. : ) have fun and keep in mind those favorite places! i'd love to go back and visit them myself! love you!

Why?
Adding to my overall learning experience from your trip, I had no idea there are so many Y's in common English conversation.... is Vanna aware of this? Glad to see you've moved on to "Independence Day" for your quotes! Love, Daddz

This is probably my favorite blog of yours from your trip! I figured you had grown a lot on this trip, and now I'm sure you have! I'm so happy to see that you pushed yourself when you wanted to give up and ended up looking back on it positively. I can't even imagine the places you've seen. Enjoy the last leg of your journey

Not too much longer until you see Brent!
I think I want to see India one day based on your stories. One of my former students is headed there in just a couple of weeks with the Peace Corps. .... I'm sure you're looking forward to meeting up with Brent, Sally and Megan (and eventually Thomas). I can't believe that it's already come to that. Keep on being very careful - we want to spoil you when you get home. Enjoy this last part of your journey!

It's da Heat
Sounds like you're stuck somewhere between those two famous west-India cities, Yulbesari and Smelsobad... To paraphrase what your classmate said ... "If you've gotten to the point where you can smell yourself - well then you fit right in in India" Those red dots on Indian women's heads are actually thermometers; the dots turn blue (like the beer label) when they reach the right temperature. Ever notice that you never see blue dots? Hang in there, it can only get cooler... Dad

Hey man
I bet you've heard this enough but I can't believe all the places and things you are seeing and doing. I love that new pic of you...you look "in the moment" a true traveler if that makes sense. I guess this counts as a real "adventure" (wink). All the best bud.

I got cut off....read the other one first
Just a random fact for you: Mosquitoes have forty-seven teeth. They do not use these to bite, however. Instead, they have a proboscis, which is a tubular appendage.

so I am currently in Denver, Co and wishing more so than ever that I was already in Austria meeting up with you. I just realized today how close it is till we will be meeting up with you! J

Time to Return
So I'm reading the latest blogs and checking my schedule to see if we can hook up again in Rome, or Vienna or maybe you'll just let me carry your backpack if I promise not to hold you back too much this time or get in the way and I really can do without AirCon and boom-boom massages and a good map, but then I realize you're two thirds of the way home and it's too late for this trip but maybe next trip next summer when you return to New Zealand to really explore the south island, or perhaps the next trip should be some place really exotic like Gabon or the Seychelles or you might change your mind about MedSchool and I'll figure out what I really want to do for a living and decide to teach Shop with GPa at Delgado and get three months a year off and your Mom can get a twelve-month job and we'll live off the fat-o-the-land and eat roasted crickets and Indian goat crap and then we can do this every year! (McGannon would be impressed to see you diagram that sentence structure- did I ever tell you about my Intensive Writing class?) Keep the cards and letters coming in; no more Caddyshack or Airplane quips, time to move up to the top of the list: Office Space, and if you feel worthy, The Jerk. Dad

Gnats... ?
I'm thinking that your blog is going to be about large flying insects... and I find that gnats are really steps or something. Who knew? Every time I read another one of your blogs I think that you can't top this one... and yet they get better and better. Thank you for spending so much time really telling the story. I am SO enjoying it. Isn't it amazing that some places actually emit a feeling of history and reverence and faith? At home: we are moving the 'international headquarters' of Crescent Power Systems from Baton Rouge back to Lakeview... on the same day that the Times Pic tells the story that the 17th St. Canal is leaking. What can I say? Life is wierd! Also in the news is that McCain has approached Bobby Jindal about being a running mate in the Presidential election. Don't stay away too long... you never know what will transpire!!! I know Meg is lookng forward to joining you. I'm sure you'll enjoy the company. My boy got his wisdom teech out and is suffering, but will still be leaving for Paris on the 30th. See you soon - much love, Ms. Donna

I like the spur of the moment moves to do the more interesting things. Seems to have paid off nicely. Keep us up to speed on smells of the area and foods you eat. Those comments have been great. I think that one goat was winking at the camera or was that the Spanish girl.

You are redefining the phrase " roughing it "
I have enjoyed reading your blog immensely and it makes me wish that I had at least done the Peace Corp with Susie after law school . Unfortunately my wife'e outstanding student loans and frugal nature , ie we had no money , convinced me otherwise. On the good news front your recent experience with goats in India makes you the obvious candidate to replace Thomas Colosino as Fr. Benny's " chicken feed " boy in Saltillo this summer ; Thomas will be relieved. Also you , more than anyone else , will appreciate the luxurious bus ride from NO to Saltillo in our air-conditioned bus with non-stop DVD viewing ! Be safe , have fun and keep the great stories coming in .

surely, you must be joking...
sounds amazing...looks amazing...so much of me can't even believe you're doing this. now we have written proof you're becoming dad, surely not? do me a favor - when you get to london, if you visit abbey road, walk across it barefoot. i got to cross it, but cars were lined up waiting for us to cross. enjoy it- trips like this only happen once....but of course, you'll probably do it again NEXT summer, too? :)

Been there & done that
Mickel, Once a long time ago, I raced my Cal-30 across the Gulf to Mexico, over 550 miles. My boat was the smallest in a fleet of 40+ yachts, the race was 4 days of hell, after which the race committe declared no boats under 35' would be eligible. This race was one of the greatest adventures in my very adventuresome life. After reading your blog, grandson, my small experience cannot hold a candle to what you are doing and seeing on a daily basis all around the world. Keep on trucking, I'm looking forward to hearing about your next adventure, and when I meet you in Rome, we'll go into a bar and I'll raise a glass and toast you. Gpa

So Sorry
Pardon, Sahib - MemSahib brain dead. I think a Saab is a car but I'm not sure. Too much working in the yard. FYI, Poppy bought a 4-person golf cart. Shades of Peggy at age 11 on Jeff. Hwy. running out of juice. Keep on squeezing 30 hrs. into everyday so when you tell your grandkids about what you did when you were a kid, you can add "I travelled around the world" to "I spent my summers in the Bahamas spearfishing and sailing" with my grandpa. Pizza and Tiramisu and Coliseum here we come. Gma

Goode's
Michael, Remember the day before you left, I asked if you were going to Kathmandu and the Himalayas and you said "No". I grabbed the Goode's and showed you how close it was to Delhi and told you that you needed to include it in your plans. You made it there, Michael - you made it to "Camp Don Bosco". I can't tell you how happy I am for you that you got to see Everest. Grandpa says "Go for every golden drop of life - don't let anything pass you by."
