hello. Last time we wrote we were about to embark on our Halong Bay journey. This is one of those "must sees" here in SE Asia, and after our trip we would definitely agree. We chose to travel on a tour through the Hanoi Youth Hostel (choosing a tour is the biggest challenge as there are thousands of choices from all the travel agencies throughout Hanoi, and they are all pretty much the same). However, the youth hostel promised a younger crowd and getting off the beaten track a bit with a visit to their private beach. We ended up with a great group comprised of 4 Brits, 2 other Americans besides ourselves, an Aussie, an Irish girl, a Canadian, and Dutch girl, in addition to a crazy English dude from the Channel Islands (the British ... read more

Walk through the streets of Luang Prabang and you will hear "tuk-tuk waterfall" about 100 times before reaching your destination. Well, we wanted to see the waterfall, but not by tuk-tuk. So, we rented some bikes (some poorly made Chinese beach cruisers with no gears) and set off for a 35km Tour-de-France loop up into the mountains towards Kuang Si waterfall. Our book described the ride as "gently undulating through rice paddies." Well, it was more like "straight uphill through limestone peaks" with a few downhills that seriously tested our poor bikes braking capacities. The ride was beautiful, though more than challenging in the 90 degree heat (that Megan even made it to the end was a miracle). The waterfall was well worth the trip, with a series of smaller falls with great swimming pools, and ... read more

Sabaidee! (That's "hello" in Lao). So, we've had our first crazy adventure of the trip, but I think we'll save it for the end of the blog so we can tell it in some detail (and those of you who've already had enough wont miss out on reading everything else we've done in the past few days because you're already bored.) Our last blog left on in Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand. We ended up extending our stay one more day to see elephants...and it was a great decision. We had opted out of the normal "trekking" scene of Chiang Mai both because of our concern for the impacts on the local villagers, and because despite our desire to see elephants, we didn't want to see them performing tricks at the elephants camps that populate the ... read more

We finished up Bangkok with a visit to some of the "must sees": Chatuchak weekend market (which had everything and everything you could ever imagine), the Wat of the Emerald Buddha and the Grand Palace, Pat Pong road, and some river cruising. Sunday night we left on our first overnight train ride (14 hours) to the north of Thailand, Chiang Mai. We got two beds in a sleeper car, and a very bumpy noisy night's sleep. The views were incredible and our neighbor was a Preston Burke, from Grey's Anatomy, look alike. Chiang Mai is a much quainter town than Bangkok, though still decent sized and very much on the tourist trail. The old part of the city is surrounded by a moat and we have a chill guesthouse down a narrow soi (lane). Everything is ... read more

Hi everyone! We've arrived, are safe and are having a blast so far!!! Our flights were fantastic (thanks Laura and Carole!)-we got to sit business class on our first flight (which according to Matt was like being Thai royalty!). We stayed at Peter's condo the first two nights which was very convenient and helped us to adjust quickly as well as get a taste for the real Bangkok (before heading over to the tourist mecca of Khao San Road (KSR)-which is like being back in South Beach, times ten). We've already mastered the public transit system of Bangkok: we've taken the metro, skytrain, a bus, water taxi (during which Megan almost took a swim in the canal, but luckily escaped with just slightly bruised knees-imagine boarding a boat that's moving, with twenty other people moving as ... read more

Hi Everyone! We thought we'd post an entry before we leave to make sure everyone can find it and can follow us along on our journey! We leave in just under a week to spend three to six months travelling through SE Asia. We have no set plans, except that we are flying into Bangkok, Thailand. We hope to see Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Phillipines (and maybe more if we have time and money!). We'll try to post a blog every week or two with pictures so we can keep in touch with everyone and let you know where we are. We'll miss everyone! Love, Matt and Megan... read more
