It used to be a colonial mansion back when female dresses had to reach their ankles. Since the start of our trip we have never really planned more than a couple of days at a time, so we decided to grab a flight to Bangkok with Dennis and Nicole from Ha Noi and spent a couple of days weighing up where to continue our adventure. After saying goodbye to them after travelling on and off for around 5 weeks, our last trip was all squeezing into a tuk-tuk to take us to our hotels, we said goodbye and checked into our home for the next 4 days. We spent our whole time going through different plans as to where to go, shopped for new clothes and caught the second state of origin match in between ... read more

Bree punching one in the face and almost kicking the same lady as she made a rapid descent down a muddy slope. As fate would have it, out of 511 hotels available on agoda in Ha Noi, we chose the same as Dennis and Nicole who we said goodbye to in Hue. They happened to be planning the same as us, a trip to Sapa in North West Vietnam, with some quick rearranging of our accommodation thanks to Tim our desk man; we booked into a 2 day trip leaving the following night. We piled the majority of our luggage into the corner of the hotels main dining room. We weren’t leaving on our overnight train until 9.50pm so we thought it would be a good idea to grab a $4 bottle of vodka and kick ... read more

We rose early, cameras in hand to catch the sun rise over the limestone islands... There was no sun. A rushed dinner and a very appreciative chef (see to learn why) saw us running late for our sleeper bus to Ha Noi. Backpacks, satchel, laptop and camera bag in tow we rushed down the quiet Dong Hoi street in the general direction of the bus stop. Pacing and only one block into our walk the hotel manager pulled up beside us on her motorbike and said “jump on” pointing to the both of us. We both looked at eachother and cracked a smirk as we imagined the site of us both squeezed onto the back of her tiny bike. We are not so accustomed to a Sunday drive with a family of four on the back ... read more

The world’s most beautiful & magnificent cave A $7.50 train ride to Dong Hoi. This is a much safer option than the bus that teeters on the edges of lakeside cliffs as we dodge lane-swapping oncoming traffic. Upon arrival at our hotel we enquired about a few different tour options for the famous ‘Phong-Nha Caves’. After some consideration of the very limitedtour options we decided to hire a motorbike and endure the 140km round trip ourselves. That night we went in search of dinner. We weren’t after much, but when thinking back to our time in Battambang, Cambodia this place is 5 times quieter. Dong Hoi was a ghost town and luckily enough the only apparent person who spoke English was the manager at our hotel. We managed to find a restaurant that kindly offered us ... read more

Our bus ride to take us from Nha Trang to Hoi An was the worst we had endured yet. 11 hours on a night sleeper bus situated yet again on the back seat with Mark and 3 others. Hot and sweaty, trying to sleep with 4 bags on our legs. We both got about 1 hour sleep each. We arrived in Hoi An at 6:30am with a shuttle bus greeting us to take us to our hotel. With check-in not available for another 5 hours we slept by the pool until that time. Again, we were sharing a guesthouse with our friends Dennis & Nicole. We all hired bicycles for the day as we thought it the best way to explore our new home for the next 3 nights. We got to break our frisbee out ... read more

We boarded our 8am bus booked last minute lastnight to Mui Ne. Mui Ne is North up the coast from Ho Chi Minh and is famous for their windsurfing and sand dunes. It wasn’t until we stepped onto the bus and were asked to remove our shoes that we realised we had booked a sleeper bus. We were slightly excited as we had wanted to experience one. Our excitement levels were soon dampened when we realised we had been shafted to the back, sharing a very cosy seat with 3 other strangers, very much hung-over from their previous night out. With our hotel address now very skilfully programmed into our phones we managed to get off the bus within walking distance to our hotel. Checking in to our $21/night room, we were upgraded to the Premier ... read more

The bus journeys and time spent on the road is getting easier & easier. The bus ride from Phnom Penh, Cambodia through to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam was 8 hours including a stopover at the border to have our passports stamped. The process was seamless. Hand your passport to one of the assistants on the bus, receive a departure stamp, get off the bus on the Vietnam side of the border for another stamp and checking of your baggage, then proceed to your destination. Our arrival in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) marked a change in our vulnerability. We had the usual heckles from taxi drivers as we stepped foot of the bus. Having no idea where our bus had docked, we decided to show a taxi driver our hotel address and he agreed to take ... read more

You should never base your opinion on a place from first impressions; if we did we may have just jumped back on the bus and left. We took the early bus from Siem Reap and arrived around midday to check into Aisa Hotel (where Dennis & Nicole will also be staying). We took a walk to find some lunch and felt a little let down by Lonely Planets 4th highest tourist destination in Cambodia. The evening improved our spirits slightly with a nice dinner at a resturant that hires under privegled street children to help support their family. Our second day involved a nice breakfast at the hotel, $1.50 per kg laundry that we couldn't say no to and the decision to hire bikes and take a ride around the town and get a feel for ... read more

Angkor Wat is the largest Khmer temple complex in the world, situated at Angkor, Cambodia, built by King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century. 2:50am we awoke to a clunking sound coming from the air-conditioner. 3.15am we cracked it and turned the air-con off. 3:30am we woke again, this time to the sound of drunks returning home from a night out, presumably in Pub Street. 4:00am the phone alarm chimed for us to rise to meet our Tuk Tuk driver so we could catch the sunrise over Angkor Wat. At 4:45 in the morning the air was already steamy and the streets were almost at bustling point. We took the 15 minute Tuk Tuk ride out to the Angkor front entrance gate and managed to squeeze in front of a bus load of tourists. We ... read more

We have been on mini buses before in South-East Asia that were clearly a test of our survival skills. No idea why we thought this trip was going to be any better. We spent more time on the left side of the road (which is the wrong side of the road) than the right side of the road. I am also convinced that the horn was definitely jammed on the whole time. There is no way that someone could have the thumb strength to hold it on for 5 hours straight. We did arrive in Siem Reap eventually, and not too worse for wear. We booked our accommodation online prior to arrival. Lovely pool, nice breakfast and spacious room. Or so the photos and internet description suggested. As soon as we plonked our bags down in ... read more
