Back in Sauraha we had one final activity and Bishnu took us down to the river. Elephants were being scrubbed with stones and washed all over. Bob and tom climbed up onto the back of a female elephant which was sitting down in the water. The Mahout (elephant keeper) said some words and she stood up and began throwing water all over her back and the chaps clearly got a thorough soaking. With a different word from the Mahout, she shook her back and Bob and Tom came flying off into the river. Ed and I had a go and then Cas and Hat. It was a cool and funny way to end the morning. One elephant seemed to particularly like playing in the water and she would disappear until only the top of here head ... read more

Up and out again for 7.00. The Marmite that Tom brought out was finished off today and the Heinz ketchup bottle has less than one squeeze left...Ed is very much looking forward to home cooked food and Cas is going to introduce new dishes to expand the repertoire. We took a five minute walk with our guide Bishnu to take a a canoe down river. The canoe was cut from a single, long tree and hollowed out. It was a great piece of carving and it's flat bottom meant that it could float in very little water. It was a bit scary coming face to face with Marsh Mugger crocodiles who hide expertly amongst the lilies and mid-stream weed clumps, eyes ever watchful for a tasty morsel... Bright blue kingfishers whizzed up and down the river ... read more

Our activities start early in Chitwan as the days can get very hot. We all met in the restaurant at 6.30 and we were in the jeep by 7.00 and heading to the river which marks the boundary between the park and the buffer zone where local people live and farm. We gingerly climbed in a long narrow canoe and were punted across with a very long bamboo pole. We tried not to think about the crocodiles that we'd seen in this river yesterday. We had three guides as we have young children, so this creates more protection as a group. Vishnu briefed us about being quiet and keeping together and then what to do in the event of a rhino charge or a bear attack. The trail entered the forest and the noise shot up ... read more

It was an early start for our bus to Chitwan National Park. We arrived at the Pokhara bus station in time to order teas and coffee and for the lads to buy some panoramic photos of the Annapurnas. The bus journey was 6 1/2 hours and it was by far the bumpiest journey we've done on the trip. There were also a few nail biting moments in a long stretch of gorge road as there were sections with no barriers and a 200ft drop to the river below. Bob got chatting to a 17 year old Nepali and they watched a comedy on his phone. We arrived at the dusty Chitwan bus station and the taxi drivers were out in full force. I walked up and down the line looking for a sign for Green Park ... read more

We're taking a rest day today, after the travelling, rafting and walking it's time to chill out. There is a spa on the lake called Jiva Cafe and it served mighty fine iced mint and lime as well as doing massages. It was Bob and Tom's first massage and they were put in a room together, Cas also disappeared for some pampering. This left Ed and Hat and I to sit in the shaded garden, amidst lots of flower beds and play Lego, colour books and doze respectively. We walked back along the lake and found a restaurant to lunch. The kids went back to the hotel whilst Cas and I bought bus tickets. I then disappeared for a shave which was expertly done. Tom was keen to hire a boat and take it out into ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Annapurna June 2nd 2016

It rained all night and the mountains were completely hidden at dawn. The room was hot and damp and, with the prospect of Mozzi bites, it was a choice to be bitten or be boiling, so I opted for the latter. Tom was feeling better this morning but wasn't eating much. Bob had a rough night with his tummy and wasn't in any state to do more walking. After a discussion, we asked our guide to call for a jeep so that they could go back to the hotel and rest for the day. As we waited for the jeep driver to have his cup of tea, it's Nepali time after all, we spotted this sign painted on the side of someone's house. After waving them off, we climbed a further 1,600ft to Australia Camp where ... read more

Asia » Nepal » Annapurna June 1st 2016

We have three rooms and they were very basic and scruffy which is to be expected given the remoteness and poverty in the village. Bob and Tom shared, Hat and Cas and Ed and I. As I took the toiletry bag to the ladies room, they opened the door and quickly summoned me in for help. 'There's a leech', they cried! Cas had found it when she popped off her sock. After the leech was thrown outside, Cas asked me to check her all over for any other leeches. There was an almighty shriek, 'oh my god, it's a leech on my wrist'. It turned out to be the loose end of her black leather watch strap! Hat and I rolled around laughing and Cas quickly saw the funny side. We set out alarms for 5.00, ... read more

We set off on a two day trek in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas. Our guide and porter met us outside the hotel with a minibus and it took us about 45 mins to reach the start. The trail was a set of stone steps that went up and up for 3000ft, although, we didn't know that at the time. We passed through forests, fields of rice and sweetcorn and clumps of Rhododendrons. There was a mix of sun and cloud, so the conditions were favourable for hill walking. Our destination was the stone housed village of Dhampus, to a tea house that was pure backpacker ie run down, scruffy, someone's home and home cooked food. Tom had a dodgy tummy and he was feeling poorly by the time we got to the top. So, ... read more

We returned for a hasty breakfast and the scooted off for a morning of white water rafting on the upper Seti river. We managed to get a raft with the six of us in and, after a good safety briefing, we were off into the grey silt laden water. It was a fast and technical river and the side where Cas, Bob and Hat sat seemed to get most of the waves over the side, however the water wasn't too cold. The hairiest moment was when we became jammed up against a massive boulder, however, we all followed the guide's commands and jumped to the one side to free us up. At one point we had to get out and walk a stretch that was too dangerous for us to paddle. This gave our group the ... read more

It was a dawn start to take a jeep to the Himalayas viewing point at the top of Sarongkot. The clouds were quite thick and we only saw flashes of huge icy peaks. When it's clear, the whole of the Annapurnas are laid out like a picture postcard - just like the image I've pasted from Google. Tom was feeling jaded and he fell asleep bent over on his lap and he indulged in some high altitude snoring. Later Bob and Tom were laid flat out on some concrete steps; it's a hard knock life... Hat's latest aspiration is to be a photo journalist, so she wandered the viewing point snapping away merrily.... read more
