Africa » Namibia » Sossusvlei December 2nd 2020

We woke up nice and early to head out to the last big adventure and the one I was most looking forward to: Sossusvlei! We had a good breakfast on the terrace overlooking the desert with the owners feeding the local squirrels and birds and other such lucky wildlife. Our guides got us in the car to leave by 6:30 and we were off. A 45-minute drive to Sossusvlei. Along the way, of course, we saw some animals, such as a family of springbok before we entered the park. Sossusvlei Once we entered, we saw a bunch of oryx and even kudu hanging out in the dunes. We continued our drive to the literal end of the road where there was a picnic area set up. Here was our last chance to use the toilets and ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Walvis Bay December 1st 2020

My typical car mates were back together at this point, with the.... quieter driver. We were heading from Swakopmund to Walvis Bay (another town recommended by friends). Most of us opted at lunch the day before to skip the kayaking with the seals after having spent enough time with them at Cape Cross. Instead, we decided to take a tour of the dunes in Sandwich Harbor, you know the iconic photo of Namibia with the giant golden dunes meeting the clear blue water of the Atlantic. It was even better than expected! Sandwich Harbor We arrived on time to the pier / boardwalk area, which was super nice! I believe it was 9 of us who joined the dune bashing and we got to ride with two guides, Eckhard and Rene, (I got to ride in ... read more

After leaving Palmwag, we continued our journey. We saw a couple of mama and baby giraffes early on, but after that, the roadside wildlife was non-existent until much later in the day. The new car had more trouble as the battery then died too! very exciting for their driver, but we fixed it and moved on. We arrived at the Skeleton Coast National Park pretty much on time, used the facilities, and took some photos at the entrance. We saw a few other tourists hanging around too. Our first stop inside was a short hike up a small hill to see Namibia's national plant: Welwitschia mirabilis. Generally the plant can be 1,000 to 2,000 years old and only has two leaves. There are male and female plants. It is considered a "living fossil". We also saw ... read more

We left Epupa Falls at a decent hour, first riding four to our vehicles before we picked up the new rental (an SUV). That meant that we had to switch some of our usual riding groups around, and I wound up driving with Shapa again, as well as V and N. There is not too much to report on this adventure except for the scenery. Almost all of the driving was on gravel roads, except when we arrived in Opuwo for another 2+ hour lunch. I got another toasted ham and cheese sandwich, but knew to expect the sit and wait this time, so the beer helped. I think my favorite part of this whole trip was seeing the wildlife on the sides of the roads. And today we saw so much! Especially giraffes, which were ... read more

We left Melissa's guesthouse after a good breakfast. My travel mates and I were in Shapa's car today, whose name basically means that he was a 'vaccine marker' - essentially, he branded their cattle. He had another name, that I cannot spell, which means "what kind of weapon" which dates back to the German occupation and how their fighters had to use weapons that were non-traditional but available. When he first started out as a guide, he faced a lot of discrimination, including from other guides, for wearing his traditional dress. Little did many realize that he speaks English, Afrikaans, as well as his native Herero language. Along the way, we were passing the western border of Etosha National Park, though not going in for a visit. Etosha is approximately 22,000 square kilometers and it's name ... read more

As you probably know, I had been working from home since March 22nd, and only left the city of Dubai 5 times during that time period. No family, limited social interactions, stuck in a room for months on end.... I needed something. My usual travel group was putting on a trip to Namibia during the long weekend break in the UAE - celebrating Commemoration Day and National Day, we had a 5 day weekend, so made the trip 10+ days. I had been trying my best to follow the rules this whole time, but I decided to try this trip, helped by the fact that Namibia is one of the most sparsely populated countries in the world and it was on my bucket list. I had been fighting a bad cold before I left - I ... read more

Middle East » United Arab Emirates » Ras Al Khaimah November 16th 2020

The weather has finally started to turn nice, so that means lots of outdoor activities. Lately, that means hiking. Usually, I'm not a huge fan - it's just not my thing - but it has been nice to see all these different areas of the UAE from this perspective. It is so quiet and peaceful, with a little bit of history thrown in. Not to mention, it is pretty much automatically social distanced, especially since we tend to take the less popular hikes. And yes, we have mountains here in the UAE. A pretty large Hajar Mountain range actually, highest point being around 6,000 ft. So, here are three of my most recent hikes and a camping trip. What have I been doing during Covid? A lot!!! So, this may be a long one and I'll try to update more frequently in the future.... Work I have been working from home since March 22nd. Not much happened from March through July, at least, not much that would interest anyone outside my company. However, work was extremely busy. We are based in Dubai, but many of our projects require us to travel around the region. As such, when the borders and airports were shut down, I had geologists scattered across Mozambique, Maldives, and Saudi Arabia for work, while one was stuck just before he was planned to return from leave in Pakistan. Maldives project went on and despite only being able to get half our team into the country before lockdown, we were able to ... read more

I have not left the country since January; actually, I have not even left the city of Dubai since mid-March except for once to go to a store. I was getting antsy, depressed and angry at work. Initially, I planned a trip to Greece for two weeks, but it just seemed like the hassle of getting there would be more than it was worth and Covid cases were on the rise there. Instead, I thought I would get a luxury hotel on the Palm and my friend mentioned that maybe I should take a roadtrip. It helped that local hotels were also giving discounts to UAE residents. And thus the idea of my Luxury Roadtrip was born! Ras al Khaimah - Ritz Carlton Al Wadi This is one of the more luxurious and expensive resorts in ... read more

Africa » Djibouti » East » Tadjoura January 28th 2020

Our last day is what I was greatly looking forward to. After we had left the interior and returned to Djibouti City again, with another stop at the Casino supermarket, we went to a hotel for our last night. Finally - a shower!!! S and I shared a room - she got the big bed, so I got to shower first. I washed my hair three times; it was still crusted in salt from the day before. Everyone else went out for dinner that night in town, but I just decided to stay in - I was not feeling well and was exhausted. I did not want to be stuck in town having to wait on a ride if I wanted to come back early, so I had a dinner of granola bar. We had all ... read more
