| 2nd March 2009 Jen | Girl with eye disease - From: Bissau bustle and blues You should not have recovered the money from the girl with eye disease and talked about spending it on sexy night. what did you go to do in Bissau in the first place? a sex holiday? you tourists are the one encouraging those girls to go into prostitution with you. had the girl do that you would not have bothered to recover the money. did you go there to show off your western wealth? I find your story prejudicial, to stress the "inferiority" of Africa to Europeans or Westerners. |

| 7th February 2009 Sydney Chichester | Very enlightening pictures and commentary - From: And then it changed Thoroughly enjoyed your text comments and pics! I'm planning a group trip from Fredericksburg, VA, to Princes Town, Ghana in the fall (of '09). This is our "sister city" now, and you might say it is a humanitarian trip since we've sent many needed things to the village of Princes Town, near the old fort you mentioned. If you have any more "insight" you think I might find useful, please do let me know. Thanks for sharing your adventures! Sydney Chichester, former middle school teacher in VA |
| 12th December 2008 ian | nostagia! - From: A fading hope Well, nice to know you had a nice time in that part of the world. | 19th November 2008 Emile G. Thomas | I can't believe you're still travelling - From: The Wild West Hey Bobby, It's been a long time since we first met. Was it 2000? Man, time flies. I can't believe you're still on the road. Or more specifically, back on the road. I'm envy your journeys, but I'm happy that you are enjoying your road. Sorry for not commenting for so long, but my address has changed from hotmail to gmail. Anyway, may your road be filled with adventures and the ability to survive them intact. |
| 5th November 2008 Peanuts | Travelling in Angola - From: The good old way of travelling I am suprised by the comments not to travel alone.. I am living in Luanda- Morro Bento and have never had any negative experience... Driving by myself through the country.. People are extremely friendly and positive. Of course soemthing can happen as well, but I certainly believe Angola is not much more dangerous than any first world country.. |

| 15th October 2008 Tibi Kibe | Basotho - From: Thoughts from Mr Rittersport's back seat Hi there I am a Mosotho woman (although not from Lesotho) but I have a huge interest in my people and culture. I hope some myths and some wrongs can be corrected in the way people write. This is such a beautiful document which has been put together. It shows the essence of the Basotho people. I think more clarity on Moshoeshoe's shoe needs to be made because some don't know who Moshoeshoe is. Is the person wearing the shoe Moshoeshoe or would a shoe that looks like that be called a "Moshoeshoe shoe". I am sure you understand taht the correct terms and words need to be used as the BAsotho in South Africa are of different groupings and this information is vital for our children as they access the Internet so much. Please make sure that things lik e"Basotho foot" get erased as I'm sure a Mosotho's foot looks just the same as a German's? Please clarify. All in all, well done, this website is really cool and the picture quality is excellent. Warm Regards Tebello Kibe University of the Free State Bloemfontein South Africa |
| 30th September 2008 sophie | a stumble upon your blog... - From: Sahara hot nights i enjoyed reading your blog - thank you. mali in may - ouf, must have been hot (only did mali in may once and that was spent largely under the cover of fans in bko!) |
| 23rd August 2008 Trish | WONDERFUL! - From: A fading hope I have just spent the last half hour 'wallowing' in these fantastic pictures and stories. As an ex Zimbabwean who has watched the country go to wreck and ruin since the 1980's, it was just magical to see that you have captured the true Zimbabwe which the world doesn't see. I spent time in the Chimanimani Mountains and also Vumba in the 70's when I travelled as you have done and your account has made an old lady very happy. Many thanks - wonderful!! |
| 25th July 2008 Seshan | REsponse to Bobbie Nystrom's blog on Hare Durban - From: Hare Durban, Hare Durban, Durban, Durban, Hare, Hare! Nice ly presented. However some of the remarks on Hinduism were not warranted at all. One must bear in mind that almost without exception all religions have something illogical about them, as we perceive it even if it were Islam or christianity etc... Being the most anicent of religions what we get to see is a highly watered down and popular version of what is stated in the Vedas and the Upanishads. |

| 23rd January 2008 chris malandrini | dream your world awake - From: The Wild West jambo world explorers! Habari? Nzuri sana. wow... you kids are moving around the continent with a quickness. are you still riding your bikes? you should definetely stop by arusha if you get the chance, i know a really amazing family that would love to meet some good people. my friends name is Ray Mlingi, and his mother owns a hostel outside of arusha overlooking this little valley and water fall...really nice place. his phone number is 0717229790, not sure of the country code so you'll have to check that out, but they are really good people. his mothers name is joice. if you run into any trouble give them a call they will help you out. let them know chris malandrini from betty levitovs africa semester got you in touch with them and they will sort you out. joice cooks for the prime minister sometimes, so they have some good connections! I hope your travels are going amazing. know that my love is with you always. give aili a hug for me! currently i'm playing keyboard in this band "somasphere" in LIncoln. it's going really well. we have a battle of the bands this week for a spot to play at a summer music festival that usually has about 10,000-20,000 people over one weekend! so that's exciting. and my birthday is on friday, 25 of jan, going to see some music and get funky! tanzania is a beautiful place, check out Ngoro Ngoro crater, it's like a hidden paradise. spread the love you share for each other with all the people you meet and your path will grow brighter! love and light chris |

| 16th December 2007 Falc | Guinea Conakry - From: Highlands and lowlifes You're entirely correct, Bobbi, about Conakry. It's the unwashed bunghole of the planet. Most everyone and everything is for sale. But if you bear that in mind, it can also be a bit of a relief. For a relatively small sum, you can have and do as you please, while in more "sophisticated" places, some moronic bureaucrat is all too quick to declare "NO!" on anything and everything, leaving you without recourse. I'm not sure which is worse.... but I'm glad you made it out intact. |

| 14th December 2007 grantcorp | Storytelling at its best! - From: 24 hours As usual we are spoilt by your under the skin photos and rich storytelling, this semi-journal mode really works well. I had to smile at your note on random people throwing Portugese greetings at you along the road, the exact same words and experience that you will have in Timor Leste. |
| 5th December 2007 syrran | We welcome Lord Varuna and Lord Vayu - From: Hare Durban, Hare Durban, Durban, Durban, Hare, Hare! You never told us about the qualitys of your reincarnations. Being lord of the water and lord of the wind (if I'm not mistaking), must be such an tremendous relief. You can directly lay down your bikes and start surfing up the coast (if you're allowed to use your divine qualitys, outside Durban) Good Luck!!!!! |

I`m currently in North India, just about to leave for the warm tropical South. The crisp Himalayan winds have persuaded me to go and chill out for a while in Karnataka. I haven`t read your latest blog entry yet, and will save this for later when i will be away from chaotic Jaipur and will find myself sitting in much more quiet and less crowded place. I hadn't taken a close look at your blog for a quite a while (too busy getting lost in India again), so i just spent a good one and half hour reading the previous entries. Then came the little fairy's adventures, which really made my evening here in Paris, where believe it or not, no such creatures are to be seen. At least by me! I love it Bobbie! You're a story teller that can make one forget about one's reality in a few lines. Again, your photos make me want to know Africa, if only the other sub-continent (the Indian wallah) ever lets me go one day! Tell me one thing my friend...if i plan to visit you and Aili again...will i have to fly over to South Africa? Please.....say "YES!" Love to you both! Keep smiling and never let the camera down! |

Part I: The Devil brothas' and sistas' of the world! your story and pictures fill my body with the memories of africa.....how suttle the flowers collect dew in the mornings above kalk bay,the swing of an african mama on her way to the market with a large basket balanced ever so easily on her head, waking up with sand between my toes....ah my friends.....how i miss mama africa! how is life treating you? all is well on this side of the pond, slowly getting back into the swing of american life, slowly....i just got a job at this fundraising place for non-profit organizations...everyone that works there is really cool, but it's not quite as glorious as the life ofa world traveler. so alex is heading over to england to meet up with his girld friend kirsty.....lucky man......still in contact with nadine from germany, but nothing serious...hitting up some good music festivals this summer so that is going to be the shit.......tell aila i said hello won't you.....i have some amazing contacts for you in Tanzania-arusha mainly, kenya-lamu island-paradise! and ethiopia-gondar-old church, castle, lali-bela; special heady spot (dont tel the rest of the world).....but i have friends in all of these locations that would probably be willing to show you around or put you up for a couple of nights. where are you currently? I'm in Lincoln, NE...the middle of the united states.....fucking 3000 k from any ocean! ahhhhhhhh what ever will i do....so my next trip will probably be out to sweden? what do you think i'll see you in a couple of years my friends.....love and light.......keep me updated on your travels...... chris.malandrini@doane.edu ............your pictures look good, and the dialogue is solid...... that fairy is hot |

| 11th January 2007 Marcoelitaliano | Wow! - From: The whim of a dictator Great, great pictures Bobbie! are you a professional photographer by any chance? if not, you should seriously consider the idea. I agree 100% with you about the organized overland tours mostly loaded with people which only interest in the visited places is to discover new brands of beer. That happens in Africa and everywhere else in the world, unfortunately. Marco PS: Were you succesful in convincing the old brit at Vic falls to try his "luck" with alternative suicidal means? Which one did he finally chose? :-) |

| 13th November 2006 fred | - From: Fear: An emotion caused by the presence of danger. Hey Bobbie, i just sent an e.mail to a certain Miss costa rica, after reading the above, so i won't say much here. I'm rather distraught and spechless actually! really look forward to hearing from you again! |
| 13th November 2006 sprucemoose | Best. Blog. Ever. - From: Fear: An emotion caused by the presence of danger. I've been (admittedly irregularly) keeping up with your blog which I find nothing short of enthralling. But better still, this entry would have to go down as the best travelblog.org narrative that I have ever read. You could write a book! |
| 13th November 2006 Niki | From Lusaka - From: Fear: An emotion caused by the presence of danger. Amazingly written. And stunningly breath-taking considering that I already knew some of the stories. One morning in Camper's Kitchen I found a cup with a Boobie-Nystroem-Sun. That made me smile. Kirsten quit her intern and will go to Tanzania. Fortunately, she will sit with me in canoe before that, trying to dodge all the hippos and crocs on the Lower Zambezi (Lee and Kathy convinced us to go). You are still in Livingstone, I guess? See you in Cape Town. Niki |
| 8th November 2006 Mimi | Splendid writing and photos! - From: Concrete jungle I could not stop reading your blog until there was no more. Your detailed observations, the information you gather, and the way you put it all together is brilliant! I also love your writing style. In my opinion, yours is one of the 3 best blogs at travelblog. Thanks for spending the time and money required to share your adventures with your fans. If you can manage, please keep writing. |
| 4th November 2006 Frank | great experience - From: Who do Voodoo? The beninese are unfriendly because they don't want you to talk or ask them about those old days, stupid things like "voodoo". They want to progress, not stay the same as they used to be 40 years ago. You would have been very welcome if you went there to talk about how Benin is developing(technology or example). About the transportation, it does happens. Taxi drivers are those who went to school for years and never got a job. At least they want to do some instead of being homeless or thieves. Just like in the U.S(in New Orleans for example) there are poor people living, there are also those kind of people mainly in the Norh. They are the ones in the country who chose to stick to their cultures that are completly the opposites of the real world now. I congratulate you for such experience you had. You might be wondering :who is this personne talking about Benin so much.Well I am from Benin. I am glad that people like you want to know what is going on out there. Did you learn french over there? |
| 2nd November 2006 Martina | Missing sound... - From: Concrete jungle It was supposed to be a suprice, though I couldn't keep it for my own! (you know me, never really had that patience) I've start recording your story. Reading it (with my broken brittish accent) and provide it with enchanting sounds of my african imagination. I want it to be read, spoken and heard by the unwitting! It would be a nice contribution to the "SoundBooks" of today. Sorry for not asking of your permission first, I must been astonished by your stanza (my way of feeling your stories). If you don't like it, I wont continue my work, otherwise it would be something to re-record with your voice when you come back..... Big Love and hollow happiness from your always smiling little sister... |
| 2nd November 2006 marcus and babette | those southern blues - From: Concrete jungle good to hear from you both. amsterdam in the far northern hemisphere isn't doing so good either... think we were in the same guest house in libreville with the big garden. it was our entry point into africa so we thought it was pretty mad (and colourful). did you try the espressos on some of the street corners - best in the world. anyway just want to say we are loving the stories and the pictures KEEP GOING, and all the very best. m&b |
| 31st October 2006 le_flow | - From: Two wet worlds Hi John. At the summit it's a bit windy and can thus get cold if you don't have a thick sweater or a windshield jacket. But if you sleep in ome of the huts, a normal light weight sleeping bag is enough and a sleeping mat to insulate you from the grounds coldness. I did the whole trekk in t-shirt and shorts and only at the summit did I actually need a sweater. It didn't rain on us but we carried waterproof jackets just in case, and it isn't that much extra weight. Good luck. Wish you a panoramic view from the summit. |
| 30th October 2006 John Heath | Mont Cameroun - From: Two wet worlds I am planning to climb Mont Cameroun next weekend. Am having problem finding out out likely temperatures during night and day at various altitudes along the way. I know it's rainy season, so will be very wet, but any idea what the temperature will be at/near to the summit. Am wondering about clothing to carry and whether light or heavy sleeping bag. Thanks for any advice |
| 24th October 2006 eric | sorry...lol - From: And then it changed just wanted to say a belated sorry on behalf of my people who had suddenly "mutinied" against commonsense after they lost to Brazil. Now u know we can turn nasty when our egos are hurt...lol..sorry. Thanks for the perspective and the pictures...didnt know my country was that beautiful...enjoy it whilst i enjoy newyork too!! |
| 19th October 2006 ConMel | - From: DEMOKRASHNIKOV - a summary of West Africa 2006 Well, that's a great blog man, probably the most useful one on the site, you didn't miss a thing there. I think probably your in DRC now, look forward to reading that one... |
| 17th October 2006 anonymous | - From: DEMOKRASHNIKOV - a summary of West Africa 2006 What?! So.....this is the end, is it?! I thought you two were going to be in Africa forever! It's been quite a trip Bobbie, hey! A trip i was always more than happy to follow, thanks to your writing and photographic talents. This blog is by far the most well done and exciting one i've ever come across. You've been a long way since that first long trip of yours in China, which you once told me about. Having a special passion for photography, as you know, i was especially pleased to discover all your images. Whether it be portraits, nature or moments of life....your vision and portrayal of Western Africa is one of great sensitivity. I like to hope with you that some day this region, and the rest of this amazing but sadly forgotten continent, will rise and be recognized for its rich cultural differences, natural beauty and diversity, rather than for its resources that were and continue to be plundered over the centuries. My country certainly has a lot to answer for as far as Western Africa is concerned! I will miss these mails in my box telling me about le flow's new entry. One thing you didn't succeed though, is to avoid a personal meeting with miss Malaria! Have a smooth return to Sweden, and do something about those pics! Fred, your secret admirer! |
| 8th October 2006 whewdoggy | photos - From: Two wet worlds you have some pretty spectacular photos- mad props. |
| 6th October 2006 atim | - From: Public displays of nonaffection GREAT blog!! AMAZING narrative! You put all native english speakers to shame!!! |
| 6th October 2006 Ewan | Hell of a journey - From: Two wet worlds Hi. Your blog is astounding. I'm really impressed by your concise summaries and excellent photos - I know how hard that can be on the road. I lived in Senegal for a year, and dreamt about going to Cameroon. I never met anyone who made the trip by land, but you make me want to try. Are you still on the road now? Where is your stopping point? Again, kudos. You deal with everything in a straight-forward and open-minded way, in what can be a very foreign, difficult part of the world. |
| 5th October 2006 Kate Hildebrand | great blog - From: Two wet worlds I'm learning a lot! |
| 4th October 2006 Hunter Cashdollar | bamako - From: Sahara hot nights I always wondered what Bamako was like. Good story and photos - think that's as close as I need to get to that place, though. Hunter Cashdollar |
| 20th September 2006 Sasha | The best blog - From: With open arms Yours is my favorite Africa blog, but I have declined to comment until Nigeria because I don't agree with your views on countries. I have passed through many of the same places as you on my trip and not had the problems or criticisms that you had on them. But I agree with you 100% on Nigeria. I am in Calabar now, soon to join you in Cameroon. Did you stay at the ECWA guest house in Kano? The building site looks like the view from my room. |

Tough shit that is, but Africa is also famous for its unfriendly mosquitoes, as we all know! I'm sure Aili is taking good care of you, and i like to believe you're alright. You're a strong man! Drop a line if you can, will you. |
| 26th July 2006 Fred | - From: Butterflies and beautiful smiles Hey Bobbie, good to see you back here, read your words and see your photos! Keep it up, and a late "Happy birthday" to Aili! All the best to you both, fredji |

Max |

If there is 59 different ones that means that the bug is fixed, if there’s only 9 pictures as you view this blog, then you are welcome to re-read it in a week from now. Then hopefully you can enjoy all the butterflie pictures added. Bobbie |

Great pictures! |
