Crazy motos is right - we were totally unprepared for Kmer traffic! Didn't know you could fit 5 monks on a motorbike! Hurrah for Melbourne - got any photos to substantiate our claims of a cool city?! Or of our stay with you?

Melbourne, cont. - From: Melbourne cold nights...
Damn those thieves that got your memory card in Sydney! They just seemed to bookend a pretty ordinary time for you in Oz. I'm really glad you made it to Melbourne though, and that you were able to scratch the surface of some of the stuff going on here. You're right, Melbourne has this fantastic lanway culture that has grown over the last 10 years or so, and I'm only just discovering it myself... great street art, music and so many bars and drinking dens behind hidden doors. Glad as well that you had a chance to experience Melbourne cafe culture. I love that about this city, and often wish it were similar in London rather than the glut of chain Starbuks and Neros and Rebublics with their shite beverages and homogenised design. Have a great time in Cambodia and watch out for the crazy mototcyclists everywhere... nik x

bula you! - From: Bula from Fiji!
Bula you! Hey - thanks for following us! I know, you know how we are so into our coffee :-) and sampling local fare is an obsession! It's always disappointing to be in coffee producing places where local people don't drink or sell their product, preferring commercial Nescaf :-( They think we are a bit odd drinking so much caffeine in such hot climes. On the various occasions when no-one could go near the food in Fiji, we just ate our emergency cereal bars! But it shows the diversity of the resorts and the ways they deal with tourists - some share their local knowledge and interesting food and others just slap down the most basic inedible cheapest and easiest stuff despite the fact the tourists are paying, relatively, big bucks. Because the tourists only stay a couple of days and generally never come back - not a great symbiosis in Fiji altogether. You don't get what you pay for, you just sometimes get lucky; we have confirmed this during our travels!

Old-fashioned language - From: New Zealand North Island
We're racking our brains for the things people said to us in shops and hotels, when we used to giggle and say my Gran used to say that! Has floated out of our brains now in Oz! But generally, people speak very proper and varied English and use loads of expressions, which we seem to be losing the nack of in England. Makes the speak sound a little archaic. and they call shops proper names like drapers, ironmongers etc.

I'm so glad to see that your trip is, so far, so detailed in its fauna-related research - "water bird" - is that the latin? Sorry - just jealous. Loving reading the entries so far. Keep it up! That's if you can fit it in amongst the sunbathing and snorkelling. I'm sure Cliff Michelmore didnt work this hard in his pursuit of bringing news from far-flung climes back to blighty! Have Fun!

our knowledge of portuguese has in fact been praised! I am really enjoying trying and it seems to work far better than in portugal. People will talk to you even if you make loads of mistakes - many don`t speak English. Even taxi drivers don`t know the little cobbled streets here though (in writing, I mean), which doesn`t make life easy!
