not spaniards - From: Portugal doesn't get enough credit
our misconceptions about your country just keeps on growing when we ear you relate portuguese as spaniards...we are not spaniards....spaniards are related to spain...portugal and spain were never a "one country"...for christ sake we're older then spain...would you like to be called "canuck"? lol we may share the same language roots but that's all...

I'm sorry, But I had to - From: St. Patrick's Day
Sorry, again, but I just had to write to you. I found you're site accidentally when I wanted to see pictures of the parade this year for St. Paddy's. So you know, that team of little boys was a HURLING team...it's an incredibly awesome, fully Irish sport that's been played for ever. (and IS really dangerous) Curling is the thing with ice and brooms that Canadians are good at. Hope it helps.

Jamie you are funny, feel sorry forwhat you went through..maybe you should toy with idea of a career of humorous writer...you will doa world a favour..just like you did it to me ...feel happy and reinvigorated for the rest of the day...take care matey. By the way , I am from India, I did visit Seville in October,2004 but always went to El corte Ingles or other departmental stores for good and reasonable food. Also some nondescript restaurants in the bylanes served excellent food...and wine!!

My child, I wonder if you realize all the things you have done, all the places you have seen, and all the experiences you've had these last 4 months. You have taken the utmost opportunity to expand your education by experiences of a lifetime. I'm proud you, and I'm happy were able (and brave enough) to take advantage of the situation even when you had to go it alone. Please don't miss your flight home...we are anxious...to see you... soon.

Flip side of the cultural discussion - From: Portugal doesn't get enough credit
Hi Jamie! Love the blog! It's my "virtual European vacation!" ;) Glad you had a meaningful conversation with the Carmens; and don't forget the flip side of your cultural experience -- clearing up Americans' misconceptions about Spain, Europe, etc., when you come home. I know you'll do it very well! It's such an amazing, big world, isn't it? You're so lucky that it got a little smaller for you -- but, you aren't so lucky that Golden Bream is considered edible food in Espana. Maybe it would be better if it were deep fried and served with a cheeseburger and fries! ha ha ha! Love you! Katie

Dear girl, keep having those enlightening conversations! - From: Portugal doesn't get enough credit
Oh Jamie, good for you. It is important to clear up misconceptions about our country! I had wondered if they had much curiousity of your land or whether they knew much about it already from their former students. As for Portugal, it does sound like a grand place to visit and easy to get around there! (I've been reading Mauve Binchy and find myself using her terminology!) Take care of yourself...we love you! Oh yes, great pictures too! I have noticed your extraordinary care of that camera! Hehe.

The value of your exchange trip - From: Portugal doesn't get enough credit
Jamie, nice posting today. Your discussion with your host family truly shows the value of exchange programs such as yours, that offer the opportunity to live with families. I think often people have misconceptions and mis information about other places and people. Only when we take the time to connect with others can we truly learn and share. Thanks for doing your part in making this world a smaller, more connected and understanding place. I have friends that were IFYE's in Portugal, I would love to travel there too. Take care!

I miss you my darling!! - From: Life goes on, every day more beautiful than the last!
Jamie!! So you will be happy to know that I have just spent the last hour and 9 minutes of my wake-up duty reading ALL of your blogs... when I shoulda been studying for World History since 1450 (GAG) oh well, what can I say. I have to say your trip to Spain is pretty much the coolest thing ever!! My favorite part: being able to relate, and think in my mind, "Holy Cow, I have been there" and I know exactly what you are talking about. Well, not exactly, since I had a lot less independence on my trip, and I was only there for 2 wks, but you know what I mean. As far as the food: I know that Kaitlyn, Avery and Billy pretty much hated it, but I didn't mind it too terribly much. Course, I am a human garbage disposal, so I really can't talk lol :-) Anyways, life is completely insane/chaotic right now, as I am sure you can imagine. I just wanted to leave an extremely long msg entry to make you feel special, cause after all, YOU ARE kind of a big deal-- People know you ;-) We miss you and just wanted to say HOLA from your wonderful Clover-home! God Bless!! ~Sharita lo quita

Actually, Jamie, it does sound quite laid back compared to what your life has been in the States! Spanglish is also widely spoken by the latinamerican population in U.S. They constantly switch from one language to the other. Chech it out: http://www.vueling.com/ Congratulations for your best post so far. :) PD:'Mediterranean Sea' -double R- (did you realise it means 'in the middle of earth' in latin?

Don't worry, child :) The point is that the forth comming book by Dan Brown (author of the Davinci Code) will stir some serious crap, and as we all know, removing crap only make it smell much worse. Try to be a good reporter (I hope this word actually exists ;) ) and write as much about Seville as you can. This way we will learn if Mr. Brown is actually right and Seville stinks (althoug I think that 14 years have gone by since he came to Seville, and many things may have change)and our perception is wrong because we may lack of objetivity (gosh! what a spelling!) our if, on the other hand, Mr. Brown does have a distorted vission of our home place. Anyway. have fun, and I'll send you some pointers on places to go for "Tapas" and some fine wine or beer (only if you are over drinking age, eh? ;) ) BTW. if you drink beer, our is not only stronger than american beer, but also colder, so you may want to drink carefully until you come used to it. Have fun, childe!

don't worry man. your completely right about spanish food...it does suck! They tried bigging themselves up because some overrated chef named Adria gave the world the illusion that in spain the gastronomy is good, when all you have to do is move across the border into Portugal for some fantastic food, or even better: France. Spain's a shit nation landlocked between two fine countries...Hope your not staying there long.

Don't Worry, honey - From: The food
I'm a Sevillian Boy (or sevillano, como decimos nosotros) who used to live in England not long ago. You'll learn that you shouldn't judge a whole citie by one unlucky cheff (in fact, my parents own a restaurant in Carmen's University, Won't you come to have lunch sometime?) When I lived in England we used to have those bloody sunday meals.. I got used to spend the whole day hitting the street, having a sandwich and a "drink as much coffe as possible" card. Regarding the croqueta (note spelling, croqueTa) issue, dont worry. Croquetas are very varied in composition, and sometimes even flavour ;). Mi favourite croquetas are aubergine flavoured. It's an old receipt from grandma. Anyway... I'll shall read you now and then.. Have fun, honey... and keep experiencing! P.S. Just dont try to feed yourself on a Mcdonalds menú on daily basis...
