To my friends and family, There was blood everywhere. On her hands, in her shoes, down her legs. That’s what gave it away. The blood on her legs. I don’t think I’ve ever seen that kind of bleeding. And the smell; a warm, metallic smell that you could almost taste. Did she taste it too? Maybe she tasted something else. Maybe she tasted the sweet deception of a long anticipated relief. Or maybe she tasted the bitterness of regret and a forward that she could never reverse. Maybe, after being unwanted and uncared for and unheard for nearly 4 months she finally tasted want and care and someone who’d actually listen. Who knows. All I know is that blood was everywhere and that I was starting to feel nauseous. This is her story. I don’t know ... read more
My Friends and Family, Jambo! It's been too long! I'm sure by now you're nearly all convinced that I've been spending the past 3 months in the heart of East Africa serving, volunteering, and selflessly offering my love to anyone who will take it. Friends, I hate to tell ya this, but you've been sucked in to some sweet deception! In reality only 3 days ago I was lying on the powdery white beaches of Zanzibar Island, swimming in the brilliantely teal and almost too warm Indian Ocean, suffering from a brutal headache because I couldn't decide between the fishburger or the hamburger for lunch, and finding sand and seashells in cracks and crevasses that sand and seashells should never be. Life for a volunteer is tough, huh? Now now, before you go revoking your blessings ... read more
To my family and friends, Hello! How are ya? Its been almost three weeks since we last chatted and for that I've got to apologize. For two weeks I was in a village called Keumbu near Kisii in Western Kenya, a good 30 km away from any cyber cafes, and for the past week I've been lazy. It's for that last bit that I'm apologizing. However, while the last three weeks put me into a semi self-imposed exile of internet silence, the noise and sounds and alarms in the rest of my life have more than made up for it. This I'll get to in a bit. But before anything else, there's something real important that I need to share with you. In my first post from Kenya I greeted you all in Kiswahili by questioning ... read more
To my friends and family, I miss all of you! i know, its kinda strange to greet you like that but for a second lets forget the formalities and put aside how we think letters sent home are suppose to sound and lets you and I sit for a while in the fact that we’re missing each other. This past Tuesday I passed the 1 month mark, with 3 more months to go, and that’s what’s been on my heart. I miss ya! I miss being a part of your lives and sharing days and meals together. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m absolutely loving my experience in Kenya, learning and seeing more each day that continuously confirms that this is where I’m suppose to be, that this is where I’m learning to love, that this will be ... read more

hey all, i've been trying to post pictures for about the past two weeks but with random power outages and slow internet connection the goin's been rough. So, with all that, here are some pictures I've taken mainly from safari and one in nairobi where i saw a sweet Jesus sign. Hope they encourage! I'll post more soon. peace to you kyle... read more
hey all! i pray that you've had an encouraging week! I personally am writing you after a doosie of a week and a half. I've had some spectacular food, a few dances with death, and a brief stroll on the road to the rest of my life, and with all that, I hope to share with you the intimacies of my time here in Kenya and encourage you the way you've been so purposeful in encouraging me. Sadly, I feel like i'm about to embark on a tale that can't be adequately shared in the few lines I've been given on this page. Nevertheless, with your patience and my stammering tongue, by grace I hope to give you a glimpse of the GOD at work over her and paint for you a picture of what its ... read more
hello friends and family! it has been a huge encouragement to read the letters, quick notes, and comments you've sent my way. so much love between all of us and its making me all warm inside! as if africa wasn't warm enough. haha. i wanted to post a brief entry from my journal last week that has really got me thinking about GOD. specifically, the reality of GOD in the life of someone infected with hiv and then the reality of GOD in my own life. this is my attempt to process and chew through it all: "this last thursday i saw for the first time in africa the face of hiv. she was beautiful. she hesitantly approached the pharmacy counter, a ritual she'd apparently come to know since her diagnosis but somehow had been unable ... read more
habari yako! i know its the ultimate cheese cliche to greet you all with an official and legitimate kenyan greeting in my first official and legitimate post from kenya but i've grown particularly fond of this one as of yesterday. "habari yako" literally asks, "is there peace", to which a passerby or dear friend might respond, "mzuri sana!", meaning, "there is peace!". so to all of you back in the states or abroad, my loving family and dear friends, i pray peace to you and hope to hear that it is a Kingdom peace that has become and sustains the anthem of your lives. i'm writing you from a cyber cafe in the heart of kitengela which is where i've come to call home and my place of work, if you want to call lovin' work. ... read more
hey all! today is the day that i fly out to kenya and endure 21 hours of fly-time to live in kenya for four months. and while i'm not there yet and am anxiously sitting in the comfort of puyallup i wanted to post the letter i sent out to many of you. it includes why i'm doing what i'm doing and what it is i hope to find there. here ya go... To my friends and family, I pray that this letter finds of all you renewed and encouraged these hot summer months and that the rest of this season brings peace and relationship to your lives. It’s with great love that I write to you because it is you who have so deliberately chosen to love me. You’ve laughed with me and prayed with ... read more
