Telenor. Imagine, if you will, innocently trying to fill up your pay-as-you-go plan. first, you go to the website that's not in english, and 2 hours later, courtesy of google translate and some stellar intuitive skills, you get to the part where you have to pay.. then it won't let you. Then, you still with me? ,, you try to find the number to call. Since your pay as you go plan has run out of money, you have to use the SIM card from back home.. i can only imagine what this costs.. when you get to the automated system that...you guessed it... is only in Norwegian. My strategy was to start at 1, and press 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9, and then 9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1. Somewhere along there this combination of random numbers got me to a person.. who explained ... read more

A few minutes ago I realized I was about 45 minutes early, hence getting out the computer. Our last day in Svolvaer was a gloomy one, cold and wet all day long. We still managed to hike down into town with our Dutch friend Paul who was also staying at our Bed and Breakfast, walk around, get soaked, look at some of the ... read more

Good Sweet Lord I am exhausted. First off I would like to comment on the raw beef meal from 2 days ago. It was called "beef Carpaccio" as I just looked it up, so some of the food connoisseurs among my vast audience may have known that it was going to be raw. For the rest of us I have a picture. On to today - the day started off with our free breaky which consisted of Cheese, cheese and more cheese (nom). This included Gouda, goat cheese and some delicious norwegian cheese, rye bread, jams and some Granola. And obviously coffee. We decided to go cross country skiing in the mountains because fishing wasn't available and we couldn't rent snowboarding equipment anywhere. We set off with some food packed as well as layers, and my ... read more

First of all, I would just like to commemorate the northern lights for being so elusive. I’ll get you you sneaky little guys. After changing all my camera settings to Northern Lights settings (not that easy!) I waited and waited but sadly – no lights. . The ship I am on is called Hurtigruten – or, hunting the light. Apparently paying for a cruise ship won’t evennnnn guarantee northern lights. What a rip off. I did, however, get to visit the lovely town of Tromsø last night around midnight. Most of the other passengers went on a “midnight concert excursion” at a local church, but we decided that was too much to pay so we just walked to the church instead. On the way, because apparently we stick out with my “Canada” toque and giant camera ... read more

Hello friends! I am writing from the deck of my cruise boat, currently chugging along past Hammerfest south down the Western coast of Norway! (so yes - we have arrived safely). This blog is part of my alternative practicum for Queen's - so I will try my best to keep it up to date and PG. The trip so far has gone without many problems..The 8 hour plane ride from Toronto to Paris started off pretty well when I realized that Harry Potter 7 was available as one of the many movie selections. Then we got our meal and things got better still, Alix you will be able to see why. We arrived in Paris and immediately headed out on the RER (subway). After a 45 minute subway ride we arrived right at Notre Dame Cathedral. ... read more
