Well when we met up with the group I had no wireless at night and was too busy during the day to blog, so here is a summary. When we got to Concepcion we connected with the group that was coming to do a work project at the EPES center in Haulpen. I have a strong connection with this center, I was there when it was a vacant lot, and Kathy and I were there for the dedication of the center a couple of years ago. It is also the location of the mural that my friend Steve DeLaitsch and I [View Full Entry]

We have been traveling again!! Yesterday morning we took the bus and ferry trip back from Castro and Isla Chiloé, to Puerto Montt. We very much enjoyed Chiloé but found Puerto Montt to be a little less than wonderful!!!! And we had plenty of time to come to that conclusion (part of the problem was that it was Sunday and not much was open). I had planned our tickets to give us plenty of time to explore Puerto Montt, we got in at about noon, and for once in my life having planned ahead already had tickets for the 10:00 pm [View Full Entry]

Now that we are about half way through this trip we can honestly say that we are enjoying blundering our way through Chile!!!! (It is possible that this is due to the fact that our transportation woes have not been as great as they were at the beginning of the trip!!). We have the next several hundred miles of transport booked and barring the possibility that I got tickets for the wrong day or the wrong time we should be back in Chillan on Monday morning. Wow we had a whole day today without a bus!! Wow usually we are on [View Full Entry]

Today we head to Puerto Montt. That will be new territory for both of us. Pucon has been fine but we both have this feeling that it is like the "Jackson Hole" of Chile. There are plenty of fine places close at hand but the town itself is a little too touristy for us. So as it turns out our tickets are for 15:45 pm, so that means we will have to hang out a little longer here. So we got sweet cherries and humitas (I think humitas must be sort of the Chilean equivalent of lutefisk!!!! they are like a [View Full Entry]

The adventure continues. So as you might have heard, on our way back from El Quisco, I started to think that it might be a little hard to get to Pucon if we stayed in Isla Negra for the night. The first buses did not leave until 10:00 am. 900 km takes a while on a bus. Plus you must understand that because Chile is “shaped like a string bean” the buses most often travel at night (at least the really comfortable buses). So this looked like a really good plan, get to Santiago at about 9:30 and take the next [View Full Entry]

Happy Birthday Kathy

We went for a long walk to the city to the North of Isla Negra, El Quisco. it was a hopping place seeing as how it is New's Years Eve and that is a BIG holiday in Chile. They say that Christmas is for children and New Year's is for the adults in Chile. I think I could watch the Pacific rollers coming in for hours. We stopped at the fish market and noticed that they were selling bags of lemons and they are selling my favorite Chilean fish-- Congrio A little further they were selling clams by the kilo. Wow--Planes, Trains, and Autobuses and we are finally here. The flight went off without a hitch, we even managed to get some sleep on the all night flight from Dallas! We went Minnesota snow and landed in 68 degree midsummer weather with the geraniums blooming and hopes for a wonderful time. We passed customs without any problem, got a bus to take us to the central bus station and that is where our un poco español started to cause problem we buy our tickets, board the bus, ride to the end of the line, and THIS DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A [View Full Entry]
