Flowers Yes, the flower thing seems to be the same in Latvia, which I visited once - so it may be a widespread Eastern European thing. They're so keen on flowers that all buses there have a vase of flowers in front of the driver. That said, all those flowers don't make them smile, as Latvians are opposed to smiling (the guidebook said they regard it as superficial & idiotic).
Good grief, what a train story!! Totally loved the journey, Kate. So glad your pen is in such good shape. Hope to see pics, but you have already painted the scenes so well. And as for the ticket - well, if you couldn't blag your way onto a Russian train, not sure who could! Rxx
When I was very little, or at least little a bit littler, I remember looking at a Globe with my school friend Jenny and planning various imaginary trips. It was on one of those occasions when I saw not only how vast Russia actually is but how close the Eastern coast is to Japan.
Now, I am taking that journey. Overland from Woolwich to Japan - all 5,900 miles of it. Luckily years of commuting on the Jubilee line and having experienced the number 53 through New Cross, I feel as prepared as I can be for cramped and challenging travelling conditions.
