15 November, Wednesday... We arrived in Valparaíso or Valpo for short in the early afternoon and checked into a rather different hostel to the one in Santiago. It wasn't run down per se but it was in a rather old building and smelt a bit. Anyway we weren't planning to stay for long and headed out soon to see this town the guidebook had promised us would be so beautiful. At first glance it seems quite similar to any other city and we were none to impressed but on closer inspection is is actually quite a nice place, the houses are colourful and all of differing styles and spread out haphazardly over the hill which leads down to the port (and a beautiful port it is too). As the city is built on a hill and ... read more

12 November, Sunday... Gaining a day by crossing the international dateline isn't as easy as it sounds, Chilean officials did not help make passport control a speedy affair so after two hours of queuing we only gained two hours on the day. I managed to watch three movies on the plane so I count that as a good result. I got to practise some Spanish with the bus driver who had clearly been waiting since our landing and it turns out I understand more than I thought I would. Arrived at hostel at 3:30ish and went for a short walk about the local area, to the supermarket and ate. Great day. 13 November, Monday... Determined to do more today and make the most of my time in another continent we got up early and at about ... read more

1 November, Wednesday... So much to update this time around... Stayed in Queenstown for a couple more days. Without wanting to spend too much more money we walked to the botanical gardens (not so great but good view of Lake Wakatipu), headed up the gondola (cable car to you and me) to the nearby peak (don't know the name), where we went for the cheapo 'extreme' luge down a track at the top of the hill. Luging basically involves sitting on a plastic sled with handlebars and letting gravity take you away. Unfortunately they do have brakes and I accidentally stopped a couple of times which didn't look too good on a race track! Oh well, it was good and cheap and reasonably fun. 2 November, Thursday... Day trip to Milford Sound. Milford Sound is a ... read more

23 October, Monday... Another day in Sydney, seems I can't get away from this place. Arrived yesterday evening and didn't do a great deal so full of beans for this morning's activities. Well, we wandered around central for a bit searching for a secondhand bookstore or somewhere to exchange books. We found two places but they didn't want our lovely stack of books so we decided to carry them for a while longer, at least to New Zealand, before binning them. What next? What could possibly top that exciting morning? Headed out to do the Bondi - Coogee beach/coastal walk. It looks quite nice from photos I've seen and it was. We started at Coogee and walked up to Bondi but I'm sure it doesn't matter which way round you do it. Passed lots of joggers ... read more

17 October, Tuesday... What an exciting morning, time to say goodbye to our faithful camper aka Mr Apollo Creed. Unfortunately that meant an exercise in cleaning for the best part of the morning, it's amazing how dirty 3 guys can make a van. Anyway, out went the mini cricket and football sets along with the poker set all of which had only one use each. Money well spent I think. Time to take the van back home to the lovely germans at the Auto-Bahn (or Barn) and they noticed immediately the small matter damage done by the petrol station back in the first days, $150 thank you very much David. Although we checked into a six bed dorm full of men it was still nice to have our own beds and a kitchen. We celebrated by ... read more

12 October, Thursday... After our riveting, boozy evening last night we decided to cook up the remaining saucissons on the barbie for breakfast... hot dogs for breakfast, I really would recommend it. It took Dave's mind off his swollen ankle that he'd managed to gain last night and gave us all the fatty energy boost we needed to continue with the day. Didn't do too much in the morning other than check interweb and stock up on booze for our sailing trip in the Whitsundays. The afternoon was more exciting, however, as we boarded the Clipper boat for the start of our wonderful three day tour of the Whitsundays. We sailed out to the islands, took in some scenery and sunshine. Chatted and played cards for what seemed like an eternity while we drank some fruity ... read more

5th October, Thursday... Dave and Thom dragged me to Movieworld, a Universal Studios style theme park, early in the morning. I think I might be getting a bit old for theme parks and the drinks the night before certainly didn't help. I'd say the highlight was seeing Shane Warne who was there with his kids and was being stared at by hundreds of onlookers, myself included. After a few rollercoasters we hit the road and made it to Brisbane and its one way system in time for nightfall. 6th October, Friday... After a nice early start thanks to all the passing trucks and early morning parking restrictions we moved the van and headed to the botanical gardens in Brisbane, as everything else was closed. There are lots of pretty flowers and trees there including palms and ... read more

29th September, Friday... Woke up in the camper feeling nice and dirty and in need of a public loo. This on the road malarky is gonna take a bit of getting used to. Today we'd decided to head off to Hunter Valley in the van and try to act like ponces doing some wine tasting. I think we might have learnt something about oak and vanilla tastes but really couldn't convince anyone that we knew a thing. It was nicely summed up by a woman who remarked, "Look at the way he drinks it like a schooner glass" in reference to Dave. I bought what I think is the most expensive bottle of wine I have ever bought, a whole nine pounds! Dave's driving still left a lot to be desired and even without a drop ... read more

25th September, Monday... Back to Sydney in the afternoon and didn't really do much, just a bit of shopping. It doesn't make for an exciting entry does it? 26th September, Tuesday... Dave arrived in Sydney to help out with the driving up the coast and everafter this day shall be known as D-day, or not. We prepared a fine welcoming banquet of cereal and tea to eat in our hostel and we were set up for the day. Out we went to the Sydney tower for some views over the whole city which would have been really cool if only Thom and I hadn't flown in over the city the day before and gotten all of the aerial shots we wanted, I think Dave liked it but he was flagging a little after hardly sleeping for ... read more

18 September, Monday... After a nice sleep in Sydney airport they reopened the main doors at about 4:30am and we could check-in. A nice flight with a disaster movie (Poseidon) as the in-flight 'entertainment' and we arrived in Noumea, or at least a bus ride away (after being rather worried we'd missed all the buses). By the time we got to Noumea and checked in to the hostel the light was starting to go so we walked to the centre, checked out the main square (Place des Cocotiers) and got some din-dins. For a capital the town seems quite small and laid back, I think this is going to be a prety chilled out week. 19 September, Tuesday... A boring morning sorting out washing and buying boat tickets. It seems French is very much the main ... read more
