5 January, Friday... Arrived in Florianopolis, the first real stop in Brazil. Wandered up and down the main street looking for a hostel before finding out that the woman in tourist information had lied to us and there was indeed space in the HI hostel. Checked out the town a bit and searched for a replacement travel guide which turned out to be rather expensive along with everything else in Brazil. Ate pizza and went to a club in the evening which turned out to be miles away and took ages to get to, oh well. 6 January, Saturday... Went to a beach called Melo or something like that. It was well busy, those brazilians do love their beaches, there were also some very large waves that made swimming a real challenge. I got myself thoroughly ... read more

31 December, Sunday... Arrived in Puerto Iguazu at around midday. First things first we headed for the police station where we were told we could file the report for Thom's stolen bag mañana, not too convincing but seemed like a nice enough chap. Onto the internet for Thom to try to sort out some of his things and then a quick trip to the supermarket to stock up on booze for NYE. We met some guys we'd met in BA at the hostel and I promptly fell asleep in the sun (luckily for me it quickly turned to shade). Waking up in time for the end of happy hour I was introduced to a new drink called caiprinha, a sugary limey strong brazilian drink which in actual fact I have had before - thank you Denis. ... read more

Ok, forgive me for what will be a rather brief diary form but I'm rather out of date on this whole blog thingamebob. 20 December, Wednesday... We got into Buenos Aires and checked into our hostel at lunchtime then went for a walk around the local area trying to get to the San Telmo area but not actually reaching it. We did get to see the Casa Rosada but didn't really recognise it because of all the scaffolding, oh well that should be rectified tomorrow. Not much else to do so rounded off the day with some food and beer. Nice. 21 December, Thursday... We met some guys who'd won the 'pub quiz' in our hostel last night who invited us along to their prize of an actual walking tour of San Telmo so we took ... read more

18 December, Monday... Arrived Buenos Aires sometime in the morning after a super fun and long bus ride, the highlights of which included a bingo game with a bottle of wine for the first to fill their card, an A-Ha homecoming concert DVD and four other movies. Apart from waking up with pain in my legs the second night I'd say the whole idea was a roaring success and I think a 20 hour bus ride to Iguazu will be something to look forward to. But time for something different, we thought before that we might pop into Uruguay, to get another stamp in the passport and to say we've been to another country, and on the bus decided to go so off we went from the bus station to the port. After facing a curious ... read more

11 December, Monday... Finally arrived in Ushuaia which is marketed as being the end of the world, or at least the southernmost city in the world. We hadn't booked any accommodation but bumped into Dave (met in Bariloche) and then checked into the busiest hostel in town on his reccommendation where I met another guy I met in Bariloche (but never asked his name). As there were no seats in the commual area we went for a walkabout and came back after not too long as it's a bit cold this far south and warmed up with hot chocolate (drink not the band) while some crazy girl danced around the hostel. 12 December, Tuesday... Decided to go to a new hostel, interneted it up for a while, then we met Pam from the Navimag for a ... read more

9 December, Saturday... Arrived at about 2pm, went to eat some quality Argentine food (steak and lamb parilla), went to supermarket to buy stuff for packed lunches and checked out buses. After that I read a bit of the guide book and slept (a lot). 10 December, Sunday... Today was the day of the 'Alternative' tour of the Perito Moreno glacier as organised by our hostel and recommended by both the Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. How can you go wrong. Well we had started to wonder at first as the alternative nature seemed to be to take the back roads so they didn't have to pay the toll road and to stop at their friends cafe for tea. But on that road we did see condors, or at least we were told they were, and ... read more

3 December, Sunday... Arrived in Puerto Montt early afternoon, went for a wander about and decided there's not much here. Watched some local football on TV in 'OK Corral' pub which is just like Smith and Western for those Horsham-ites amongst you. Ate half a kilo of Dulce de Leche Viennetta in the evening then fell asleep while Thom watched True Lies on the telly. I know, how can you sleep though that??? 4 December, Monday... Did a little shopping for warmer clothes (jeans for me, jumper for TC) and lots of wine for the boat (and a mini-guitar for Thom). Boarded Navimag and sat around unexplained in port for ages. Met three other Brits; Pamela and Mariah, Ceri (well one was an American but can you guess who) and drank cheap wine and played cards ... read more

25 November, Saturday... Arrived Bariloche at about 5pm. Met our roommates who seem like nice chaps. Had a few beers and went out to a rubbish club. 26 November, Sunday... Slept in but woke in time to check out the second half of Man U vs Chelsea. Really didn't do too much else all day. 27 November, Monday... Hired a car with two of our roomies to do the Circuito Chico, (did I metion chico is used for 'small' around here). It's basically a whistlestop tour of all the top attrations around Bariloche. There's a cable car ride up Cerro Campanario for views over the region, lakes, forests and mountains are the order of the day. There's a big hotel, the Llao Llao, one of the most expensive in the country where we got to see ... read more

November 25th 2006

22 November, Wednesday... Got into Pucón bright and early and decided to ignore the nice woman at the bus terminal who offered us the chance to stay in a nice hostel and went off in search of one we saw on the internet instead. That involved a lot of walking back and forth until we gave up and found a family run guesthouse with no atmosphere which we decided would have to do. There's one main activity to do in Pucón and that's to climb the great big Volcano Villareal which dominates the skyline. It's just what you'd expect a big volcano to look like, massive, conical and with lava pouring from the crater at the snow covered summit. We booked ourselves onto a climb for tomorrow (you have to go with a guide as it's ... read more

17 November, Friday... Arrived in Mendoza in the early morning and after dealing with a moody cab driver who clearly didn't want two gringos in his taxi dropped us off at the wrong hostel insisting that it had changed it's name. We found the correct one by foot but it was full, luckily for us they were friendly and called another hostel which did have space and came to pick us up. Now it is pretty tiring riding the bus all night, mainly because it is almost impossible to sleep for more than ten minutes at a time so we really didn't do too much today. We went for a walkabout in the tow, which is very pretty and exactly what I imagine a South American town to look like, and ate our first Argentinian meal, ... read more
