Low key Sunday, the main activity of the day was attending one of the monthly rug auctions conducted by Hedger's Carpets at the Grand Hyatt - Peter Hedger, owner and auctioneer. We bought many carpets at auctions when we lived in Singapore, all high quality and very good prices. We weren't in the market for a rug today, but Peter's auction style is highly entertaining and it's a kick to watch first timers get caught up in the bidding. This was the last auction of the year, so attendance was light but people were still buying. Prices have gone up some in the past 5 years, but deals can still be had. ... read more

Today was the day for Little India. We started out at the recently renovated Tekka wet market. We were glad to see that it hadn't been modified...at least not so we could tell. Other than new paint and a general sprucing up things looked pretty much the same. We visited our favorite old tchochke stall run by Mr. Poh on the the second floor of the market. We hadn't intended on buying anything, but of course we found a really nice singing bowl and a cute little Peranakan ware lidded bowl. Bargained a bit with Mr. Poh, and got a pretty good discount for both...after paying fixed price for everything you buy in the states it's a bit difficult to get back in the habit of bargaining. We wandered down Serangoon road, the main street in ... read more

We spent most of the day in Singapore'S Chinatown. How can Singapore have a Chinatown given 60% of the population is ethnic Chinese? Well, when colonial Singapore was established by Sir Stamford Raffles of the British East India Company, the native population was not Chinese but Malay. However, the new colony attracted many Chinese immigrants. Raffles directed that sections of the town be set aside for the different ethnic groups, including the Chinese immigrant. Read more about it here. At the bottom of this page is a photo of one the signature foods of Singapore...Hainanese Chicken Rice. To learn more about this dish, click on the following link for a video clip of Anthony Bourdain's visit to this "hawker center" and this same stall. Then back to the hotel to relax. Walked around Orchard Road a bit more today. It's fascinating to see how much has changed in the 5 years since we left. Huge new shopping malls where none existed before, previous malls/hotels/offices torn down and new buildings erected in their place. We visited the Peranakan Museum on Armenian Street in the afternoon. It's a museum dedicated to the Peranakan peoples and culture of Singapore. Peranakan is the name given to people first born to parents of mixed heritage; for instance those with Chinese and Malay parents or Malay and Indian parents. The space and the exhibits have been upgraded quite a bit since our last visit. I would have liked to take some photos, but as usual with museums, no photography allowed inside. The Peranakan bead work on display was fantastic and there was a ... read more

Flights from Richmond, VA to JFK and JFK to Singapore (via Frankfurt) were fine. Usual excellent Singapore Airlines service....even in economy. But a loooong travel day, about 32 hours from leaving our driveway to checking into our hotel in Singapore. Just under 20 hours in the air. We're staying at the Trader's Hotel, a short walk from the center of the main, high end shopping area. After a quick 2 hour nap we were off to start enjoying the Singapore national pastime....eating. Walking down Orchard Road to our favorite dumpling place you couldn't help but notice that the Christmas retail season had already begun. Even though we've seen it before, it's still jarring to see Santa and snowman, etc in the heat and humidity of the tropics. ... read more
