3rdJuly 2012 Had an early start hoping to get north a little bit and also wanted to make the most of our last day of forecasted sunshine! Got some organic vegetables from Ispagnac market garden stall before taking the N106 towards Mende. It wasn’t the ‘fast’ road we were hoping for as the road twisted up and up to another ‘Port’ at 1046 metres high and then down again into Mende. Carried on along the N88 to Langogne where we stopped to buy our lunch bagette and had a look at the local market and 12thC obligatory church! We were now in the Auvergne region of France which appears to be on a very high plateau with hills, some of them formed by volcanoes. It makes for a very pleasant green landscape with far reaching views ... read more

28th– June 2012 Last night it rained for about five minutes and that was it! Blue sky and sun the next day and our first port of call was Roquefort-sur-Soulzon where the Roquefort cheese comes from. (We do have a story that on a previous travel through France we found a place called Roquefort and duly bought the cheese etc....before one of the locals kindly informed us that it was the wrong Roquefort and that there are eight Roqueforts in France!!) We arrived just as there was a lorry traffic jam with all the lorries loading up from the various outlet cellars. Walked back down through the village and visited one of the Combalou caves where the cheese is matured for a minimum of three months. The ripening cellars lie at the tip of ... read more

24th – 27th June 2012 Sunday 24th June went exactly as planned! Took the road up over the pass (there was the option of a tunnel and peage) – stopped at the top for photos and then down the horseshoe bends to Pas de la Casa, a shoppers haven! There were loads of bargains in the drink and cigarette department, a few perfumeries, lots of soap powder and toiletries, but not so many electrical shops. Tried a couple and they didn’t have the model camera I wanted and the prices seemed to be similar to UK anyway. Had one last try and they had a Canon Powershot SX220HS for 179.00 Euros. As they are £200.00 in UK and still £180.00 on Amazon it seemed to be a good bargain! Wasn’t until later I realised that the ... read more

18thJune 2012 – 23rd June 2012 After a thunderstorm last night and a strange bird that sort of sang all night long we awoke to a fine sunny day. Nearly ran over a pair of lagartos that were lazing in the road, but apart from that, an uneventful journey on the twisty N322 until we reached Balazote, where we picked up some nice straight roman roads and drove across the huge plains of wheat, olive trees and grapevines. Stopped at Tarazona de la Mancha to find a PO and get some shopping and found it to be a very pleasant place, with all roads leading to a central square and church and surrounded by wooden balconied buildings with arches underneath. We stopped at a campsite in Venta de la Contreras, which was down a ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Montefrio June 17th 2012

14th June 2012 – 17thJune 2012 After saying goodbye to the Danish couple who we had spent an enjoyable evening with last night at the bar in the campsite, we headed away from Granada on the A92G and then turned off at Jct 211 to head for Montefrio. A pretty little road and after crossing the river we were immediately surrounded by the Spanish olive groves. Lovely rolling hills of different colour soils all dotted with olive green trees! Montefrio appeared, nestling among the hills on a rocky outcrop – quite stunning! Montefrio, as well as quite a few other villages are known as the frontier of Granada and were used as lookouts and to protect Granada, eventually succumbing to Christian forces in 1486 and the fall of Granada in 1492. Climbed up, past the old ... read more

June 10th 2012 – June 13th2012 We left the house about 2.00pm (after I had done the washing and got it dried!!) and then had a fairly short hop to a campsite we have stayed on before at La Herradura. Its a very leafy campsite, about two minutes from the sea and usually has a few cats wandering about! The showers are not that good (ie can be cold water!) and the beach is more like a dirt track than sand but we like it there! Spain were also playing Italy at 6.00pm that evening so we wandered along to the open air bar for drinks and free tapas and watched the football whilst listening to the waves crashing....... A good evening although Spain only managed a 1-1 draw! (70 miles) The next day we drove ... read more

Tuesday 29th May 2012 – 9thJune 2012 After saying good bye to our friends who had also stayed at the campsite with us for the day, we drove back into Seville and then took the road to Utera. After Utera on the way to Ronda, the road was very pretty, with fields of sunflowers, verges of poppies and then yellow trees and fields of olive trees before the stunning views of Zahara castle perched on a hill overlooking a turquoise blue lake. On to Ronda and then down over the mountain to San Pedro on the coast, taking the AP road to Marbella and then the A7 along the coast to Fuengirola where we were meeting with some more friends to collect the spare key for the house (We had forgotten ours – oops!!) EL ROCIO It is impossible to describe the Romeria at El Rocio to anyone who hasn’t been here, as the whole experience is completely overwhelming! If you visit any other time of year other than Pentecost, El Rocio is a large village designed on a grid system town in the Donana National Park, with a huge Church that stands next to the lake where you can see flamingos and other birds. All the unpaved streets are very wide and made of sand, reminiscent of a wild-west ghost town in America, with large empty buildings with rails outside to tie up horses. However, at Pentecost (7 weeks after Easter), El Rocio bursts into life, with approx 90 Hermandads (Church Brotherhoods) with up to 1 million people descend on the village on their annual pilgrimage. This dates back ... read more

FRANCE Friday 18th May 2012 This is our first trip in our new (to us!) Romahome Dimension campervan other than a weekend away just to test it out! We caught L & D Lines ferry from Portsmouth to Le Havre at 23.00 which left an hour late to due to enormous number of motorbikes going to a Motorcycle Race at Le Mans. All the bikes had to be strapped down so whilst all their riders were enjoying a beer at the bar, the cars and vans were left queuing outside for an hour!! Arrived at Le Havre to a grey day with drizzle.....and crossed the bridge to Honfleur (6 euros) past a few villages where the thatched roof had what looked like iris’ growing along the ridge (never seen that before!!) before driving via Bernay and ... read more

Europe » Malta » Malta » Bugibba April 27th 2012

MALTA Strictly speaking, this isn’t our first trip of 2012 as we were lucky enough to have 3 weeks in Spain in February. The weather there was glorious and we met up with friends and spent a lot of the time walking in the mountains and socialising. We had hired a car as well so were able to go to the lakes and El Chorro and at last did a Field Club walk where we found the Arab Steps – an old set of steps cut into a mountain, which was built as an escape route for the Moors when they conquered Andalucia. Fantastic views, as there is on most of the walks we do in Spain...... Anyway, our first glimpse of Malta from the plane was very clear and we were able to pick out ... read more
