Up early again to do a couple of miles around the deck and left the ship at 8.00am hoping to get the ferry to Charlestown, Nevis for the morning. Not possible as the next ferry was 10.00am and we were told there was not a ferry back until 4.00pm so it was Plan B!! A lot of open buses were booked already so we eventually found Mr Martin, who was willing to give up a complete island tour for US$25 each as long as there were four of us! Managed to find another couple and off we went! A very informative trip, with Mr Martin pointing out all the main buildings and schools etc, explaining that since the sugar export industry was closed down a few years ago, tourism has become increasingly important – as it ... read more

DOMINICA Ok we must be mad! Got up at 06.15am to do an hours walking around the deck and more importantly to try and spot the whales that live three miles off the coast of Dominica! Totally unsuccessful!! Not even a dolphin that apparently half of the cruise ship passengers appear to see on a regular basis!! Ah well!! We did, however, spot Jewel of the Seas heading towards Roseau! Now, coincidentally, a few days before we left UK, it transpired that Peter and Wendy, Chris’ cousin from the US were cruising the Caribbean the same time as us and that both our ships were in Dominica on the same day so we had the opportunity to meet up with them! Walked the mile or so to Cafe Coco Rico where we had arranged to meet ... read more

Up at 7.00am as we had arranged to meet another couple at 8.00am to share a taxi to Soufriere. The usual trip hustlers at the port, offering a variety of trips with different prices but eventually settled on a taxi trip to Soufriere (with Diamond International) , taking in a few fishing villages, the volcano and maybe a waterfall for US$40 each. A pleasant enough journey up the Morne Fortune mountain, past the colonial style, Governor Generals residence to a view point with marvellous views of Castries Harbour ! On to Cul-de-Sac Valley with its banana plantations before passing Marigot Bay, a palm fringed cove where the rainforest reaches right down to the waters edge. A quick stop and a wander at Anse La Raye and then onto Soufriere and views of the Pitons that are ... read more

We had decided to take the overnight bus to Gatwick as we had to be there 4hrs before the flight ie 5.45am and it didn’t seem worth getting a hotel for half a nights sleep! Arrived at Gatwick at the unearthly hour of 4.10am and after checking our bags in, were rewarded with window seats on Thomson’s new Dreamliner plane! It was about an hour late leaving as it needed de-icing but we made up time on the way and arrived in Barbados (8 1/4hrs flight) at 2.00pm. Barbados is 4hrs ahead of UK! Off the plane, onto coaches to the Port, a very easy check-in and onto the ship, Ventura (P & O Cruises!) Went to our cabin (B311) but as our cases hadn’t caught up with us yet decided to have a little wander ... read more

Flew with Ryan Air 18.00pm( for a change!) for our 47 day visit to the house in Spain, arriving at the house about 23.00ish! Quite a lot of walks lined up - our first one being on the day after we arrived. so dragged ourselves out of bed to drive to the Refugio de Juanar on the Marbella Road to meet up with the rest of the Group at the old Hunting Lodge, which is now a hotel. A pleasant enough walk in the sun to a couple of miradors overlooking Ojen and Marbella followed by a Menu Del Dia at the Venta and a good catch up with friends old and new!! The next day we had a good clean of the house as the clouds gathered for a downpour and thunderstorm in the afternoon, ... read more

Sunday 18thMay 2014 It was very sad leaving Chris and Lorraine – especially as they were going south and we had to head North!!! It was such a fun couple of days and we really enjoyed their company! Had a cup of coffee before we said goodbye and eventually left, and drove high above the valley we had been on the steam train yesterday, and past the cherry tree farms until we reached Lamastre! Bought some pastries in the same shop (yum yum!!) for lunch before heading towards Le Puy en Velay! Lovely scenery with farmland and far reaching views of the old volcanic region with towers and crosses on the pointed hills! Stopped at Allegre and climbed up through the old town to the remains of the three towers of an old castle that dominated ... read more

Tuesday 13thMay 2014 Very heavy rain, with a clap of thunder overnight, that fell as snow on the Pyrenees. A very easy drive out of La Seu D’Urgell running along a valley with wooded mountains but as soon as we got to Puigcerda and crossed into France, we were more or less up to the snow line with little snow-covered villages and hill top churches! I think the top of the Pass was around Font-Romeu Odeille-Via and after driving past Mont-Louis Citadelle ( we would have stopped if we had more time!) we drove down the very winding road, following the route of the narrow guage yellow train (built in 1910) , dropping slowly and steadily to Villefranche-de-Conflent. Decided to stop and have some lunch here, and then had a walk around the walled town before ... read more

Saturday 10thMay 2014 We didn’t really know anything about Cuenca so as we drove the 8 miles into the town, we spotted a Tourist Information and a very helpful girl explained that all the sights were in the old city and the parking was at the end. What she omitted to say (or maybe I didn’t understand that bit!!) was that the road went up.....and up....round a couple of hairpin bends, then up through the narrow streets of the old City to the archway leading into Plaza Mayor, then up again to the castle archway and finally up to the free car park! Wow! Spectacular views of Cuenca with all its old churches and of a statue on the far side of the gorge, the monastery (that is now a Parador) and of course, the stunning ... read more

Tuesday 6thMay 2014 Up and on the road by 9.30am and after a shop at nearby Carrefour we left Cordoba about 10.30am on the A4-E5 as far as Montoro where we took the N420 to Cuidad Real. Easy journey through the rolling wooded mountains and as Cuidad Real didn’t really appeal as a sightseeing place we decided to push on towards Toledo. We have been to Toledo previously so we branched off on the CM4167 (scenic route!!) towards Consuegra where we wanted to have another look at the eleven Don Quijote windmills and stretch our legs! The road wasn’t exactly that scenic – just more of a 1960’s road/track with lumps, bumps and potholes but it was interesting to drive across the huge multi-coloured plains and seeing the wind whip up small tornados of dust! The 1st of May was going to be a cleaning and packing day but we were woken up by the loud bangs of the rockets at about 8.00am.........a signal that ‘something would be going on today’!! Walked down to the roundabout where there was an assortment of vehicles and trucks amassing, with a lot of horns blowing, green flag waving and crowds of people all wearing emerald green. Saw our Spanish neighbours who explained it was a romera and they were all going out to the ‘campo’ and coming back at about 12.30pm. Well it was about 1.00pm they actually arrived back in the town and about 100 vehicles zig-zagged the main roads on the town, causing mahem, despite the police trying to control the traffic! It was absolute chaos, trucks and cars waving green flags, ... read more
