OK, I'm walking down this street that they dubbed Goldfish Market, cuz the majority of fishes sold/displayed are goldfishes. As I walk down the street I notice these tubes across the sidewalks leading from the stores to the street curb. I'm guessing these are the refuse/dirty water from the aquarium tanks??? Boy, do they smell like baby poop. Getting stronger as I walk further down the street ... even more aquarium stores! Get to the corner and there's a snack kiosk selling all sorts of Chinese fastfood items. The smell is especially strong here. No wonder, it's selling stinky tofu! So, now you know. Stinky tofu smells like, to me at least, baby poop. No, I haven't tried them yet .... but I'm gonna (before I fly out ... need a few days to build up ... read more

Here's some pics of places I've been to over the last couple of days. The order of the pics are as follows: Harbour City mall area ============== 1. HK Central (island) ... taken from Kowloon (peninsula) side 2. ditto ... Star Ferry is just to the left of the picture Avenue of the Stars ============= 3. HK Central 4. Who can that be? The Peak ====== 5. Kowloon is in the background 6. The Tram (quite a steep ride down/up) Did you know there's no Wendy's in HK? They pulled up stakes. Much like Wal-Mart. Lot's of McD's & KFCs. Even Burger King is far and few to be found. It's tough to do business in HK! ... read more

The area where the hotel is situated is an older part of town (ie. Luohu district). As you can see from the pictures there's quite a few apartment buildings that are really showing their age. CNN reporter got detained for a couple of hours by Chinese security for reporting on the "Oba-Mao" t-shirt AND refusing to give the t-shirt to them. Here's what it looks like ... internet is still heavily censored by the governement in China. I'm writing this from my "closet" in MongKok (Hong Kong). No need to worry about censorship. Pictures of "closet" to follow ... and I broke down and went to the Golden Arches for a Big Mac value meal ($25 HKD = $3.40 Cdn.). ... read more

Ah, this is more like it! It's @ 7:00pm and the sidewalks are jammed pack with people. The food vendors all have their tables in front of the hole-in-the walls selling their specialties. No "stinky tofu"!? OK, it's my first day here, I ought to take it easy (easy on the stomach ... just in case). Like Shenzhen, j-walking is NOT a crime, but a right! Lots of people handing out flyers in front of stores. Christine ... you're right! Those double-decker bus drivers drive like maniacs. Dare I take a tour on one of these? Sit on the top deck, up front! Get an experience, right? Tonight, I'm going through the brochures I picked up at the Hong Kong Tourist Association's kiosk when I crossed into HK from Shenzhen. Good night (it's Wednesday evening ... ... read more

Sorry if I haven't been updating my blog as often as I should've been ... It's a bit of a double-edge sword with regards to taking the video camera out or not. If you take it out, you're instantly on the crosshairs as being a tourist; if you don't, they don't know (at least I thought they didn't). I was at a 7-11 buying some OJ and the cashier switched from Mandarin to Cantonese ... she said I didn't look like a local. What gave it away? Darn. BTW, even the monks are pushy here. I was walking on Jiefang Rd. and one grabbed my wrist to get me to take a red envelope (this is not the kind you want to receive from a monk on the street). I refused and kept walking. For you ... read more

Hi all, Made it in after a gruelling flight from Ottawa. Have been trying to catch up on my sleep ... not working out too well. Ate some breakfast this morning from the hotel's restaurant (included in the price!). Went back upstairs and fell asleep for about 3 hours. Went out for a walk around the neighbourhood. Scoped out a supermarket & bakeries. The MixC shopping mall isn't too far away. I'm hearing a lot of Mandarin speakers. The only Cantonese I've heard was the bus company driver & host on the way into China from HK. Stay tuned ... H.... read more

This was a trip I took with friends from Montreal back in May of this year. Lebanon (NH) is a great place to make a pit stop for lunch. Be forewarned, it might take hours to get out of that place, especially if you have women passengers!!! I shall not say anymore ... Another POI is to stop at Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury (VT). Made it down to Ogunquit Beach. Had our dinner at the famous Barnacle Billy's (Perkins Cove) restaurant. Had this delicious coconut flavoured ice cream cone at Sweet Wonder (Perkins Cove). BTW, it's the same ice cream company serving all the restaurants here. Though I suspect some places might not carry "all" the flavours. Walked along Marginal Way (pedestrian path that follows the shorelines from Ogunquit Beach to Perkins ... read more
