I couldn't quite make up my mind about Toronto. I couldn't figure out if I liked the place or not, somehow I found myself comparing it to some of the other amazing places I have been like New York; , Boston; and of course Montreal. Now I know the folly of comparing one city to another as each is different and has its own particular vibe but I just couldn't help myself. In a way it’s like Montreal but bigger, without the soul and without the French. I could read the signs on the walls and understand people’s conversations in the street; I think maybe I missed feeling like I was somewhere far away and exotic. It felt like a tourist city, once we had done the touristy things there was nothing left to do really, ... read more

And boy did it live up to its reputation for winter, it was freezing, but to be honest it was beyond that, it was way way below freezing about 20 C below freezing, add in the wind chill and it was a ball shrinkingly cold weekend. The awesome foursome making up this little trip Rachael, Gen, Matt and myself. For me the weekend held a little more significance as February the 4th was the occasion of my 21st Birthday, but more on that later. It had been my responsibility to organise the hire car for the w/e which I had duly done of course going for the smallest, cheapest car that would fit four people into it, I had made just a tiny little insignificant mistake. I had through no fault of my own actually hired ... read more

So after spending all night on the bus from New York, , I had a couple hours sleep before getting picked up to go road trippin', my partners in crime, Nick, Eliza and Ryan. Our first stop was a place that has since become one of my favourite places in the world, Mont Sutton. Ryan knew a family that rents a cottage about 10 mins from the mountain, the Yeldon's, officially the nicest family in the world. The picturesque yellow cottage sat among pleasant green fields off a quiet country road in a charming bit of rural Quebec. The only downside was the pleasant green fields which normally would have been covered in a thick layer of perfectly white snow; alas it was not to be. The purpose of this little stop was quite simply for ... read more

Firstly I think I should explain the bed situation in NY at New Years and the complete lack of planning and blind/stupid optimism me and Jacqui had before leaving on our trip. Every single bed in NY is occupied on the 31st of December without exception, we only had the faintest hope of a whiff of a chance of a place to stay, but smiling and optimistic we both jumped on the China Town bus from Boston and arrived in the Big Apple mid afternoon. Not only did we only have a hope of a whiff of a chance of a place to stay but both me and Jacqui had rather big bags to drag around with us. Put it simply if our "accommodation" for the night fell through we were up a certain creek without ... read more

After arriving in Boston from Nova Scotia we dumped our bags at our crumby hostel and set off to explore. Our intended route took us up through the main area of Boston following the path of the river. It was immediately obvious that Boston is a city of many different contrasts and has, over the course of its long and interesting history, been subjected to many varied influences and cultures the result of which is a city where a 10min walk can have you in a completely new and interesting neighbourhood. Boston and Sports It is also immediately obvious that Boston is a city that lives and breathes sport. We had no sooner left our hostel than we bumped into the TD Banknorth Garden, home of the Boston Celtics and the Boston Bruins. To show just ... read more

As the semester wound down and people began to relax after the stress of exams it soon became clear as reality set in that most of us would be saying goodbye to each other. So for a few days we all did our best to ignore the inevitable and have fun (read drinking) before having to say our farewells. I was definitely lucky to have had such an amazing group of friends over the first semester here at Mcgill University in Montreal. It was with a certain amount of relief then that Jacqui and I were on our own and getting away from Montreal. We were off to Nova Scotia to visit one of her friends, Halina. We left on the train at about 18:30 on what would prove to be a pretty long journey. The ... read more

Lured by the promise of deep snow and wintry conditions I had decided to go hiking at Mount Mansfield, Vermont's highest peak at 1,339 m (4,393 ft) with a group from the McGill Outdoor Club (MOC). We left at the ungodly hour of 6.30am for the 2 hour drive to the Mountain. On the way we stopped at one of the girl's parent’s house for bagels and tea, which at that time was a godsend. Then it was on to the mountain. We were met with unseasonable warmth, one of the group later described it as freakishly warm. Having been told that I had needed snow shoes and crampons it was a bit of a change of plan but I didn't mind too much as I could still feel my face:) We set off up the ... read more

Start spreadin' the news, I'm leavin' today I want to be a part of it, New York, New York With the soundtrack for the w/e suitably selected it was time to throw some clothes in my bag and make the 15min walk to the bus at uni, and yes of course I left everything to the last minute and had to rush to make the bus. I was making the trip with the McGill International Student Network (MISN) and my two travelling companions for the w/e were the devilishly dashing duo of Matt and Nick. The bus ride there was uneventful as we left at 11pm so I slept for most of it which was great. On July 9 1960, Roger Woodward inadvertently became the first person to go over the falls unaided and survive; he was protected only by a lifejacket and an embarrassingly large amount of luck. He had been upstream in a small boat with his sister Deanne and his uncle Jim when their vessel had developed engine trouble. Though he rowed frantically Jim was no match for the current and they were soon rushing towards the falls at a trouser-staining pace. Fate and Lady Luck must have had a soft spot for children that day as Deanne was rescued a mere six metres from the edge of the Horseshoe Falls. Both Roger and Jim however went over the edge where Fate delivered the ultimate kick in the teeth to Jim by robbing him of this process of existence ... read more

North America » Canada » Quebec » Montréal September 10th 2006

Its 3am, I'm drunk and the wind is blowing through my hair (I need a haircut), I'm about 2m from a huge speaker, and those city lights are twinkling below me. The overriding thoughts running through my head are, Montreal is awesome, exchange rocks and where can I get a kebab. I'm on top of the 2nd tallest building in Montreal, I though it was the highest, that attractive Dane girl was right damn it, and I can see Montreal laid before me all dressed up in lights. There is something beautiful about a city at night, especially when you are high up, you can look down and it looks almost as though the city itself is alive. I am in Club 737, an average club with a silly name, expensive drinks and offering one of ... read more
