First of all, HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY AARON!! YOU ARE AN OLD MAN!! HAHA. We stopped in Portland due to the advice of our friend Sam back at home. I think things have changed since she visited a couple of years ago. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely city - one of the few places we’ve visited where sporadic green parks and places of solitude actually work, and scores of anti-chain bookstores and coffee shops to keep the likes of us entertained for a few days. It also contains the beautiful Japanese Gardens up on Washington Hill, with beautiful views overlooking downtown Portland and Mt Hood in the distance. The areas of Hawthorne and Belltown were a delight to stroll through; wandering aimlessly by the quaint shops and obscure thrift stores was reminiscent of King St ... read more

Close your eyes, and imagine this. You navigate through the early morning traffic of a small city with tree-lined boulevards, seeing remnants of dawn’s misty fogs roll over the snow-capped mountain ahead, juxtaposed against a foreground of a small handful of medium-sized skyscrapers. Leaving the city’s boundaries, within minutes you are gliding smoothly along the highway, windows rolled down and breathing in the cleanest air you’ve tasted in months. Around the bend you notice on your right a large waterfall cascading down a jagged clifftop, its watery forces cutting through lush thick vegetation and dense slate rock. You notice the deep green pine trees and tall, proud fir trees dotting the slopes as you pull up closer, the sand and gravel crushing beneath your shoes as you walk in for a closer look. The falls powerfully ... read more

Chinatown Hungry and poor, we decided to make Chinatown our first stop in San Francisco. We bee-lined straight to a cheap dim sim restaurant ($5.99 all you can eat dim sims! (now I know saying this we sound as though we are total buffet endorsers, but we maintain- its not about the quantity, its about the price!… oh it was gastronomically heaven, even the regrettable third plate) passing myriad trinket stores along the way. They sold the most random things from kung-fu slippers to gunpowder pellets (you throw them at the ground and they make a popping sound like a gun going off) and jade-green buddha statues to ear-cleaning utensils (you know what, they sound like a great idea but those fuckers are murder- ask Aaron- he of the eternal ear wax). I caught an awesome ... read more

It is a surreal and beautiful experience to meet up with friends from home whilst you’re travelling overseas. We have been lucky enough to share our journeys and experiences with many of our dear Australian friends. We gatecrashed Rohan and Jodie's holiday on the last week of their honeymoon in Phuket. We had a trashy and good ol’ catch up with Libana and Mel in Amsterdam. We travelled for an amazing 3 weeks with Jamie and Richard to Cardiff, London and Barcelona. We shared many London experiences with Aaron’s mum Anne and his nan, and also a beautiful weekend in Paris. We caught up with Ross over a trashy night out in London and also a quiet night, both unsurprisingly involving gin. We met Anne-Marie at her half-way point around the world in London and shared ... read more

Southern California, or ‘SoCal’ as the locals like to call it, is the place to be. Oozing with trendiness and confidence; overflowing with bronzed bodies and hyper-real colours. Whilst Santa Monica had a considerably different atmosphere to more laid-back and less image-conscious Long Beach, they both uphold their Southern Californian roots and traditions of promoting excessive sun-basking, refreshingly cool cocktails and über-cool small beachside businesses. Anaheim, being the other SoCal locale that we ventured to, is home to Walt Disney’s Disneyland. The Disneyland, with the original spinning tea cups and the Disney Castle and Mickey and Minnie Mouse running amuck. We got in early knowing full well that being the summer school holidays, thousands of little shits i mean kids would be running around causing chaos. Some of the rides were incredible, such as the Pirates ... read more

It’s a Friday and the sun is shining. We are currently in Long Beach and by all good reasoning I should be joining Jian on the sands, scrambling for the skeletal shade thrown from all these palm trees… But instead I found myself on a train, Blue Line- all the way back to L.A. My solo trip is a personal one, more or less. Not just a day of indulgence, a little deeper this time. An adventure of inspiration, of sourcing a spark, so to speak. This will make sense eventually, I hope. It was a comfortable 86 degrees day, warm but still worthy of a pair of Jeans- and I’m cruising into Hollywood Highlands. Familiar territory after our stay here last week. Arriving there I see nothing has changed as I expect it never will. ... read more

Welcome to Los Angeles; home of the Largo Lullaby and the swan song home of Jackson, Michael- professional moonwalker. They call it ‘Holly-weird’. And they are right. It’s actually incredible how off-kilter this place is. I thought that Berlin had this slight quibbiling nature just below the surface of its shining veneer… Well here in Hollywood (and even more-so Downtown), it’s not seething below the surface. It’s right in your face. To say this place is scary is utterly untrue, but to describe it as unsettling … that may be getting closer. The reason we’ve come to this conclusion is due to a number of things, the least of which is to do with the film industry or those who clammer over it with their Kodaks out (myself included)… But to do with the layout of ... read more

“That guy's being awfully forward with that donkey.”- Clerks 2 So, I obviously have nothing better to do with my time, right? I can hear people saying that… casual readers who only put down their travelling guitar to type up their blogs. I can hear them now. ‘This kid, this Aussie- yeah (!), he’s in one of the biggest cities in the world, New York … and what does he do? He buggers off to New Jersey to check out some potty mouthed movie sites?’ Two words, sir. Fuck.yeah. Oh and whilst I’m here, one more. ‘Snoogins.’ That’s right kids, I went to Kevin Smith land! It was an early start and Jian was dead tired that day after our Washington detour, so I woke, showered, tied up my cons and took off for Red Bank, ... read more

Demonic possession, congress and cardio- a typical day in D.C “Agent Mulder, I'm Dana Scully, I've been assigned to work with you.” (He shakes her hand) ”Oh, isn't it nice to be suddenly so highly regarded? So, who did you tick off to get stuck with this detail, Scully?” ”Actually, I'm looking forward to working with you. I've heard a lot about you.” ”Oh, really? I was under the impression that you were sent to spy on me.” And so began the wonderful, weird, sexy, paranormal, frustrated, exuberant, conspiratorial and beautiful relationship of Miss Dana Scully and Fox ‘Spooky’ Mulder. And where did this wonderful pairing meet? (fictionally of course, just don’t want you to think of me as one of those people who can’t tell reality from fiction… ahem…) Why the J. Paris left me feeling hollowed out a bit. Like looking at a beautiful apple and biting into it and it’s not bad, per se… it’s just a little floury and every fourth bite has a couple of seeds in it. As some had warned me, gay Paris isn’t the glazed cherry some make it out to be, so I’ll save that kind of savouring for the South. So, a little irritated and a little sad leaving my family for the final time before settling in Vancouver, Jian and I hit Iceland like we were the Titanic, only we never had the intention to swerve. We loved that place, we’re welcomingly warmed by the 23 hour light and swept up by my cousins who fed and treated us with stunning hospitality. They waved us farewell as we ... read more
