Two days in Avignon Day One, a Strategic decision, decided to leave Avignon until we were more jaded and head further afield. Montpellier looked good so off we set by train. Easy uneventful trip about 1 hr. We arrived about 11:00am by which time heat was starting to penetrate. First off was a little “Montpellier Little Train” tour of the main sites of the downtown area including the vegie & flower market, Promenade du Peyroux (with Arc de Triomphe) , Order des Advocats, Palais de Justice, Esplanade Charles de Gaulle, x churches and, y palaces. We finished the little tour of the key highlights of the town and decided to wander at our own pace, appreciating the very beautiful old French Louis XIV architecture. Feeling a little peckish we a came across a ... read more

Dublin to Avignon Hard to believe we started in Dublin this morning and were in the South of France for lunch. It just emphasises to us poor antipodeans how isolated we are. We arrived to a lovely little room with an enclosed balcony in the old walled part of city and went down into the square for lunch. I was very excited about my salad with goat’s cheese. The traditional food of Scotland and Ireland was very nice but it occurred to me I hadn’t seen much green in two weeks. Gobbled down a whole palate of lettuce. My escort (with driving duties now over) was not that impressed. Then it hit us… OMG, have spent the first two weeks worrying about having enough cool and wet weather gear. Now! Just hit 34oC! Attempted to do ... read more

Two days in Dublin We started with the Red bus tour. Always a good way to get your bearings and an overview of what’s to do and see. Great personal and humours commentary by our guide. Two days! Who decided two days? What to do? Now feeling a great case of FOMO…If in doubt head to the shops. Just as overwhelming there, although I manged to make a couple purchases. Back to O’Connell street for the 3 o’clock “1916” tour. This year is the 100yr anniversary of the Easter uprising of 1916. Excellent young guide who was so enthusiastic about the history of Dublin and the 1916 uprising, he was able to show us by walking us around the different locations and points of reference of what actually happened, when and where that Easter, and how ... read more

Carlow, Kilkenny, Dublin Exploring the little town of Carlow this morning we had a walk along the Barrow track which is beside the rive Barrow to an old graveyard dating from 1607. While we were looking around there the dragon boat team came rowing by. The stroke was sitting up the end with a very large drum for the time keeping. (note Yvonne Robinson). Next we visited the Sensory Delta Garden. This turned out to be amazing and well worth the visit. It is a series of small garden rooms maybe 18, all different themes with water features, sculpture and plants promoting sensory connection. It has been built by the Delta centre, a centre for training residential and respite for adults with intellectual abilities. (With government and private funding). It was fantastic. Onto Kilkenny, a medieval ... read more

Killarney to Carlow Just outside Killarney are the Torc Falls surrounded by beautiful mature native trees in the first National Park of Ireland. Some 11,000 acres were donated in 1932 by the last owners of Muckross House and estate. We took a tour of the house (yes another one) and heard how the house was built in 1843, has 65 rooms and took three year to build (pretty good timing- no wonder we’re importing Irish builders). Anyway the Herberts’ manged to get the nod for a visit from Queen Vic. It was six years in the planning so as you do they decided to fix the old place up a bit,(Did you know Queen Vis was frightened of fire and asked for a bedroom on the ground floor). The trouble was that several months after the ... read more

Ring of Kerry Well I sacked my driver today. Had to reemploy him as map reader. What a day to drive the Ring of Kerry. It looks like the Coromandel or Banks Peninsular on a bad day. “ah notin ye can do about it, to be sure, to be sure.” The first half wasn’t too bad drizzle and overcast. We followed the prescribed route anticlockwise and stopped in a couple of lovely little villages. Then at the very bottom we came to the ring of Skellig. The most westerly part of Ireland. We caught the ferry from Reenard to Knightstown on the island of Velentia (the best mushrooms soup ever). Very historical for many things... In 1857 it is where they started to lay the first cable to the USA although it was week and didn’t ... read more

Wexford to Killarney Arrived in Dublin and picked up the car headed straight down the highway to Wexford to find ourselves booked into wonderful accommodation (thankyou Denise).Wonderful indoor heated pool sauna and spa. Timing was perfect just starting to feel a bit jaded so took the rest of the day off, did the washing and took advantage of the facilities to iron out my aches and pains. Up early for big day. First stop Johnston Castle and Irish agricultural Museum and estate mostly used for research farming. My driver always enjoys looking at farm machinery and I enjoyed a comprehensive display of early Irish furniture (Saved from the vast containers that were shipped to the States in the 70 and 80 to satisfy the antique demand). We both enjoyed the exhibit on the Potato famine and ... read more

Road to Glasgow Woke up at the crack of dawn and took of tea across the road to soak up the early morning stillness of the harbour. A fishing boat was unloading and on further inpection and chat to the fisherman found two trays of lobsters heading into the back of a truck destined to arrive in Hong Kong the next day. Come to think about it I think I saw their cousin in a fish tank over there last week. Tarbert is a lovely sleepy little fishing village off the tourist track and we are thankful that Kirsten led us here. This morning we went on a short boat trip our onto the Loch Fyne. We saw seals, mussel farms and salmon farm and off course castles. We sped past a very large modern building ... read more

Peninsular of Kintyre Took another ferry much smaller this time from Lochranza to the Peninsular of Kintyre. Drove down the peninsular towards the Mull of Kintyre (the closest place to Northern Ireland) on a very skinny road with passing bays. Having to stop for passing made my driver slow right down making a very leisurely and scenic drive – unusual. Like going back in time, a place forgotten. Many beautiful old houses and farm buildings some of them derelict, looking forlornly out to sea. Maybe it’s too remote for anyone but sheep. Came to the end of the road at Skipness the post office a small cubicle in a equally small shop had in use scales looked like from the 50’s. Further along we drove up a drive instructing us as being the grounds of Torrisdale ... read more

Arran Well after the late night, up early. Decided to have breakfast in the local café this morning. Some resistance by Himself at first regarding a breakfast with the “Organic” label and a promise he wouldn’t need to eat lentils in we went. It was lovely and the setting in the original basement kitchen with the original huge coal stove and concrete water tub tap still in place. Next Grant went to get the Avis car and we packed up to leave our “The club”. Back he came with the little Peugot. After a bit of trouble with the reverse we were off with a hiss and a roar. Even with the car GPS, the phone GPS and a paper map I fancy we took the long way out of Edinburgh. Managed to fine our way ... read more
