Well Cunnamulla was further away from our last stop of St George than we wanted to travel in a day, so the little town of Bollon (still don’t know how the locals pronounce that) beckoned with an enticing free camp beside the river. The little rascals at Bollon promoted the free camp area as having free showers(plural) and toilets, but when Geoff walked to the free shower (singular) it was about 350 mts away from the main camp area and incorporated the free dunny! Oooh they do play with the truth in the country. At the end of the day we are self contained (sort of), the facilities were not required and the location was very good with the river just a couple of mts. from the door. Geoff saw some other travellers putting in some ... read more

Last blog had us in Quilpie, S.W Qld., well we are still in Qld but now heading East(ish); we keep hearing horror stories about the temps back home and are very reluctant to go too far South. Mind you the overnight temperatures here are freezing and we are very glad of the gas heater. 6 degrees inside in the morning is jolly cold. We desperately needed to do washing, not to mention all the water management (love that phrase) things so we opted for the only caravan park in town. It was a good choice as it was quite a friendly place with a Happy Hour around a hugefire pit at 4.30 – no waiting around until 5 for a drink! The owner kept the fire going with great pieces of wood and we have found ... read more

So pleased that our readers were interested in the performance data, so please read on and I will give more details for those hungry for that sort of info. Almost instantly things seemed to get better as we headed away from the coast; the number of sandfly bites keeping Geoff awake did not increase – well you become grateful for small mercies when being devoured by sandflies and the heat and humidity were also gone. Due to our late departure from Townsville, we pulled into a camp about 20 kms west of Charters Towers. We had already spent some time in Charters Towers on a previous trip and saw no reason to stop there, although Marg was keen to go to a camp on a river to the north, but that will have to wait for ... read more

Our camp at Lake Proserpine was in fact the Lions Camp, which hosted school camp groups, with a section at the back for caravans and tents. Although it is 20 kms from Proserpine, it did not look good on entry with every visible window covered in security mesh, however the section at the back could not be seen from the road (which really only serviced the camp and the administrators at the dam), so concerns about security quickly disappeared. There was reticulated water, power and an ablution block for travellers, and you cannot ask for much more than that at a cost of $25 per night. We were 1 of 4 caravans to make use of the facility although there were approx 30 sites available, and that meant that we had plenty of room to ourselves. ... read more

I must have been dreaming when I did the last blog, or perhaps I was pre-occupied with the brawl in Rockhampton. What-ever the reason, I cannot believe that I did not mention a little excursion I did from Tewantin, back to a place just out of Maroochydore. As a lot of you would know, I have just finished building my clubman (Lotus 7 clone) car, and I have tried to visit other clubbie owners that I know and do not involve major detours from our totally unplanned route. The clubbie owner in this instance has a car with similar mechanicals to mine, and I was keen to make a comparison between his car and mine. I have to point out that he has had his car for over 7 years and has put 70,000 kms on ... read more

After doing not much in Baralaba, we headed for the big smoke in Rockhampton. Marg picked a caravan park in North (and when I say North I mean far North) Rockhampton. It was called the country club (the lack of capitals is deliberate), and it had certainly faded from its former glory. That was not of great concern as it was cheap, had ablutions, power and water which is all we wanted here. We have spent some time in Rocky before and it was quite familiar to us, which helped in searching for shops and services. Marg had picked up a slow leak in the near side rear tyre of the car and it was resolved to get it fixed. It was Saturday afternoon and when we called into the local Bob Jane Tyre service they ... read more

The last leg into Qld and Tewantin in particular was a journey of some 305 Kms, and it was ALL freeway/motorway from beginning to end. Fuel economy on this run (according to the car computer) was an incredible 14.2 lts/100km. Given that our experience to date had seen figures of high 17’s to well over 20 lts/100kms we were quite happy with that run. We were excited and it was not the only thing that made us happy as we seemed to out-run the rain that had dogged us for the journey up to Byron Bay. We did enjoy being able to get into shorts and sandals (I was going to say thongs, but I knew half our readers would take that the wrong way – you know who you are!). We have probably mentioned previously ... read more

Minnie Water was exactly as we remembered it. Sadly our memory of the road in was somewhat eroded by the time we spent camping above the beach and breaking waves. I have come to the conclusion that National Parks do not want people driving into the camps they boast about providing for the common person. It was only about 800 mts into the first camping area, but we lost sight of the horizon 3 times when we disappeared into some of the potholes, and when we were on the ‘road’ they has used chunks of blue-metal the size of bricks in making the surface. Needed a trip to the dentist to have our fillings refitted after that. Fortunately the camp was not busy and we found a nice grassed site to park up not far away ... read more

Just looked at the last blog and have made a note to self that I will have to ensure I (Geoff) look at what the editor (Marg) does with my work... We left you at Dalmeny last time with the weather still threatening; local readers will no doubt have seen the devastation from the torrential rain in the NSW central coast and Lower Hunter region, and we were keeping a close eye on that. There were many roads in the area that were closed/impassable and given that the water was going to head towards the coast we chose to stay put for 3 days. Geoff tried to catch up with a clubbie driver in Narooma and who hosted to a clubbie gathering last at his motel last November only to find that he had departed for ... read more

Tuesday 14thApril and we finally get away for our trip around the coast of Vic and then northward up the NSW and Qld coast line, until we reach a point when we will return through the inland/outback of said Qld and NSW. As you can guess from that sentence our plan has some flex built into it... The theme of this entry will be somewhat focused on the weather. It seems that this was not the ideal time to leave as the weather pattern would indicate that we have missed the window before the onset of winter. Day one was not too bad, although mostly overcast, there was not anything you would call rain. Knowing that it was not going to be an early start (and it wasn’t), we only planned to get to Port Albert ... read more
