Yesterday I finally did something I've thought about doing ever since I arrived in Nanjing. I climbed Purple Mountain! For one reason or another; the heat, too busy, too tired, work, too many people (National Holiday)....I have put off going. Yesterday morning I met up with Shirley from Jin's Cafe (if you've been reading my blogs I went to a water park with her awhile ago), and we took a bus to the base of the mountain. Then we walked up a winding road about 1 1/2 to 2 miles. I thought it was fairly crowded considering it was about 9am. On our walk up we saw school groups and many elderly getting their morning exercise. We also passed a Buddist group whose chants rang through the woods in a very thunderous yet calming drone. Throughout my stay in China I have had frequent run ins with Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is more popular than western medicine here which I was very surprised by, seeing as I believe Western medicine to be much more efficient. Although... I'm sure there is something to Chinese medicine or so many people wouldn't use it! Judge for yourself. Commonly Accepted Chinese beliefs and practices: Eating noodles will help you live longer. ...because noodles themselves are long Taping magnets to your wrists will increase blood flow and relieve swelling and pain Abstaining from beer for a month will help a dog bite to heal Eating red food is good for women because it replenishes monthly blood loss Women should only eat and drink things that are hot during PMS....this is taken VERY seriously You need to ... read more

Wedding Bells Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a Chinese wedding. I was the Best Man’s date so I got to see and experience a lot. The wedding was a blast and a very unique experience so I thought I’d write a little about it. o The wedding day started early in the morning and traditional ceremonies took place throughout the day I’m not sure what that all entails because I just took part in the reception and the day activities are just for the wedding party. After all of the day activities a big reception is held in the evening where all friends and family are invited to attend. This reception is basically just a big dinner, there is no dancing just friends, family, and food. The wedding I went to had 200 guests ... read more

Over the past weeks I have been on several trips. Here are a few brief synopses of my travels which include; Wuxi, Shanghai, New Years Park, and just last weekend Suzhou. The Wuxi Hold Wuxi Wuxi Wuxi….. All I heard about in August was Xuxi. For those of you that are avid Disney fans Kung Fu Panda came out this summer and in the movie the Panda learns The great Wuxi Finger Hold! A Kung Fu move only taught to Kung Fu masters! Also, Wuxi is apparently known for it’s “world famous” peaches and beautiful city. All us interns took an hour train there and arrived surprised to find ourselves in a city that looked exactly like Nanjing! Nanjing is absolutely great but I was expecting something a little moooooore country…. Anyways, we got a tour ... read more

Jinling Hotel My stay in China is all thanks to a joint effort made by Purdue and Jinling Hotel. The program is an exchange program. Jinling Hotel takes care of 6 Purdue HTM students for 5 months. Purdue receives 25 employees from Jinling Hotel for 1 month. The 25 employees receive training, classes, and tours. The Purdue Interns receive full training in 4 major hotel departments, 11 credits from the Nanjing Institute of Tourism, and food, room, and travel, in exchange for our hard work and a research project. So far I have worked 2 weeks at the front desk, 2 weeks in Jin’s café (Western restaurant known for its massive buffets), 2 weeks in marketing and sales, and now I will spend the next 3 ½ months in Concierge. I have learned sooo much and ... read more

The next few entries are from last week. This entry being from early last week so to follow the timeline please start with this one and work your way down. Things will make a little more sense. Sorry for the confusion! Adventures of Week 5 OK, so last week I had many adventures including a water park, Nanjing Olympic Stadium, another crazy massage experience, the Nanjing Massacre Museum, Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum, Ming Tomb, Purple Palace, and Confucius Temple. Water Park Tuesday afternoon I planned a trip to a water park with a co-worker from Jin’s Café. Shayla works as a server there, she is 24, and she lives in Nanjing with her brother. Lately, Nanjing has been really hot and I’ve wanted to hang out with a local one-on-one so I thought the water park would ... read more

The Massage Massacre After a long LONG week working my feet were killing me and I was anxious to get out of the hotel. Vince, a past intern, had left the previous week for the U.S. However, his wife Margaret who I have met on multiple occasions had to stay behind because she is still waiting for her Visa. So I gave her a call and met her to get a massage. Unfortunalty it was impossible for me to find a place that just did foot massages so we ended up going back to the first place I went with the other interns and Dr. Liping Cai. The body massage itself felt great. Did I mention I got a full foot and body massage by professionals for 2 hours and it only cost me $10 USD! ... read more
