We're all up and ready early- the soon to be 50 years old twins, Mark from Ann Arbor, their guide- Tendi Sherpa... The last real teahouse morning, last real bit of walking of the Everest Base Camp Trek- it's a bit sad that it has gone so fast. Chitra leaves before us again- he is from Lukla and is obviously keen to get home. Mary, Dhana and I set off, all three of us walking at different speeds by ourselves. It's cool this morning- we're in the forest and it's shaded, once again quite beautiful. Lots of birds, lots of trees, lots of flowers, lots of Koreans. Cross back across the bridge and make a very early stop for a cup of tea. There is a little shop with a window full of samosas, Dhana and ... read more

SPRING HAS SPRUNG Wake up to the rock tappers dawn chorus. We decide to take Dhana and Chitra for a coffee at Everest Bakery as a goodwill gesture before we start todays walk (we think they spotted us there yesterday and were a bit put out). Actually I can't take the credit for the idea- it was Mary's- she is much nicer than me. Anyway, it ended up being just Dhana, Chitra had already started without us. It was a good idea, the coffee was good and it made for an amicable start to the day. Big downhill day again today. We actually took a back track out of the town through the pine forest which was nice. decided to collect some trash on the way- most common throw on the ground item were the yellow ... read more

Happy Anniversary to my Mum and Dad! The snow has stopped falling, it is utterly beautiful outside. After a bowl of ultra thin porridge (NPI score of 4/10) supplemented by a chapatti with honey we head off to start our day. The walk out of the village was utterly incredible. The snow was pristine, powdery and soft, I love that squeaky noise it makes as you are walking on it. It is 0750 and the sun is shining- it is going to be a very good day. We leave the village heading downhill. It is a very comfortable walk. The surrounding trees are loaded with snow- it is a Hallmark xmas card moment if ever there was one. It is incredibly quiet and one of the most beautiful days yet. As the sun warms things up ... read more

Gokyo to Dhole (4200m) Kitchen is still running on a skeleton staff, Mary and I offer to help they think we're a bit crazy, but I actually wouldn't mind- I haven't done a single domestic task for a couple of weeks now. We eat our interesting porridge at 7 having been ready for about an hour. Warren's tea smells like garlic- and yep it tastes like garlic- we think the powdered milk has been made with powdered garlic. I actually really enjoy these kind of situations- it all adds to the experience, it's also nice to sit and look out the window. Unfortunately for the Danes, and any other trekker today planning on climbing Gokyo Ri, the cloud is already coming in and descending- the views from up there today are not going to be too ... read more

We won. The plan... get up at 0600 for a 0630 departure, we won't get to do sunrise but we might get to have the view to ourselves. I would estimate that there are maybe a maximum of 20 trekkers in the village, so this plan has merit. Based on our time on Kala Patthar and then EBC the whole solitude thing continues to appeal. At 0710 (staffing problems in the kitchen) we leave the relative post porridge warmth and walk down through the village to the lake, it's an icy, snowy path and I earn one wet foot. The two ducks are out and there is mist coming off the lake where a hot spring is located. Some stellar shaped cracks are appearing in the lake, reminiscent of the glacial lake in Manang that we ... read more

Warm in my sleeping bag with lots of intense dreams, I think of them as my altitude dreams. Have to make 1 toilet run in the night, cold but so worth it - the night sky is so clear and starry. No yaks to contend with only a few snowy steps. Fall back to sleep easily for another couple of hours. Breakfast is a treat - last nights leftover birthday cake has been fried up and has taken on a kind of smoky taste, compliments the porridge nicely! Say goodbye to Santos and Minmar, the lodge owners, it has been a really personalised stay, I think to myself, yet again, how really lucky we have been to get to have have this experience. On the road at 0821. We have a very easy start, the ground ... read more

Happy Birthday to you......Happy Birthday Dear Mary.....Happy Birthday to you Awake from legendarily good sleep- ah 0330! Great. The room smells strongly of kerosene- I wonder if there is to be an arson attempt, a new way of killing roof rats, Korean BBQ....? At 0600 when I wake up again it's gone. Another Himalayan mystery. The sun is pouring through our window and we have a big Ama Dablam view- so awesome. So, it is Mary's birthday. As a big birthday treat we have some Himalayan bread with our porridge and black tea. Say goodbye to the Germans, buy a toilet roll and are on the road again. The plan is Phortse for lunch and Machermo to sleep. Todays terrain is again very easy- it's flat or slightly down hill, it's dry and it's another beautiful ... read more

Room Service??????? Who'd have thought? The porters are still all asleep in the dining room so we get tea and porridge in the room. I think the porridge has kerosene in it, therefore NPI score of 1/10. The 1 being for the fact that it is hot. We are out the door just after 8am, delay is due to 'discussion' over a 750 NPR (about AUD$9) bill for a camera recharge! We reach a 450 NPR stalemate. Our boots have frozen hard during the night- makes for chilly toes this morning. The walk out of Dzonghla was an absolute treat- the sinky, slushy snow of yesterday is crisp and hard this morning and really easy to walk on. An "easy, steady day" says Dhana. The actual walking time was just over 4 hrs- that certainly constitutes easy. Right? Nope, the walk was actually pretty damn hard work. We took a trail heading down from Lobouche towards what appeared to be a frozen lake, it was actually just ice covering the valley floor- super slippery stuff but really fun. We had our little crampons on which we were really grateful for. Our only tourists this morning were four Chileans who were also planning on crossing the Chola Pass too, they were slipping and sliding even more than us. After about 30 mins of ice slipping on the flat we scaled up a steep, barren hill- on all fours at times, to reach a more defined trail. This trail ran parallel with the one that we ... read more

Relatively late start- 0835. Dhana thinks it will be quiet at EBC when we get there as most people tend to arrive early afternoon- given that we were completely alone at the top of Kala Patthar yesterday we are inclined to take his advice. Chitra is coming with us this morning so the 4 of us set off, we retrace our steps of yesterday across the moraine. Spot a beautiful coloured bird amongst the common sparrows and choughs, might be a common rose finch. Moraine gives way to rocky, icy terrain but we cover the distance with relative ease. We are surrounded by the Khumbu Glacier, parts of which form huge walls of ice in different colours and formations. We walk along the ridge for maybe 600m - actually I have no idea how far it ... read more
