Antarctica » Antarctica » South Shetland Islands February 5th 2009

When we awoke the next morning the Drake Passage had been cleared and we had sailed up the Bransfield Strait into the South Shetland Islands. The ship dropped anchor in Discovery Bay, a bay off Greenwich Island, sheltered from the Bransfield Strait by Robert Island, which lay opposite. It was from Discovery Bay that we had a Zodiac (rubber dinghy) cruise around the coastline. Although the seas were calm, it was still pretty choppy. As I was positioned at the front of the boat, I soon had a tasty mouth full of Antarctic water! As the Zodiac cruised around the bay, penguins swam next to us. They swam in a very strange but 'penguin' way, almost dolphin-like as they dived in and out of the rolling swells. There was plenty of bird life sitting on the ... read more

The ship docked at Punta Areanas. A port in the Strait of Magellan just above the reaches of Tierra del Fuego. Punta Areanas is Chile's most southern shipping and transport hub. I found it very much likened to a mountainous town in the American rockies. It didn't really have that South American feel about the city. We mainly used the stop to run a few errens. After departing from Punta Areanas the ships course was to sail back down the Strait of Magellan, onto the Beagle Channel. Another famous waterway draped in maritime history. History that every sea, channel and ocean beyond this point all seem share one way or another. The Beagle channel became quite narrow and its sides increasingly steep. Crawling down from these sides were our first sights of Patagonian glaciers. Massive powering ... read more

The past three days we have cruised the Chilean Fjords. The landscapes have been quite stunning, and have changed noticeably as the ship has continued south and further into Patagonia. Just off Puerto Montt the Fjords appeared quite smooth, blanketed with lush forest. As the ship has continued the Fjords have become more rugged and moon-scape like. The trees have thinned out, the 'walls' of the Fjords become higher and there is an increase in smaller land masses, giving the misconception of numerous islands scattered in the waters once occupied by great glaciers - which, of course, still exist, some being very visible from the ship's deck. Of these glaciers for which Patagonia is famed, there are a handful which are still advancing. How do I know this?! Well it's information provided by the very informative ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Montt January 27th 2009

After a day and a half at sea Discovery docked at Puerto Montt for 6 hours. Instead of taking the excursions offered by the ship we made our own way into town. An easy decision due to the cost of the excursions and the fact that we will be passing back through Puerto Montt on the way back up. It was also a perfect opportunity to do some research into the activities and places around the town. After all it is one of the gateways to the Chilean lake district! After a quick look at the tourist office and excursions on offer we made our way down to the concrete jetty from where it is possible to catch a local boat over the water to Isla Tenglo. We had heard about the views and the local ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region » Valparaíso January 24th 2009

We left Santiago for Valparaiso. Pato directed us to the right tube stop - 3 stops down for the bus station. Would have been so simple, had Cecilia not directed us in the wrong direction. With both of us already scratching our heads about how heavy our bags were, the pain was just prolonged......After catching an evening bus we arrived to find our hostel was a traditional Valparaiso house (Unesco protected city). The owners were a local couple and asked us out for the evening. After a quick faff we ended setting out at around 1230. Not that that's a problem in Chile. After we got acquainted with the local music we danced the night away until 0530 - because Cecilia was the stick in the mud complaining of leaded shoes. Being very un-English we decided ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago January 21st 2009

After a gruelling journey from NR7 lasting 30 hours we arrived at our hostel in Santiago. After a 5 minute struggle with the doorbell in the signless porch we were allowed in - only to find out two days later that we had been ringing the light switch to no avail! The hostel was well placed and run by friendly locals who would ensure that the residents would try the Chilean summer speciality 'melon con vino' a scooped out melon filled with white wine, ice-cream and a touch of sugar. Just what the doctor ordered at the end of a hot South American day! Coupled with great BBQ's and superb breakfasts, these helped us ease ourselves into life at our first South American stop. With many of South America's big cities having a not too over ... read more
