The region of Miami to Fort Lauderdale is filled with all sorts of activities for all tastes. During my stay in Hollywood, I went to these places: A-Flamingo gardens: small zoo, with exhibits and very nice tropical gardens. Recommended. B-Dr. Von D. Mizell-Eula Johnson State Park, (previously called John U Loyd state park). Wild beaches, that stretches for a few kilometers. Nice place to look for shells. I actually found a big conch shell there at low tide. Many joggers actually go there and pick up shells as well, (to sell in stores???). There are places for boat access. Near of this, there's a dock where I fished and caught many small fishes. Saw parrot fish near the corals. Very recommended!! C-Butterfly gardens: Butterfly houses with gardens and light music. Relaxing and beautiful. It's quite small ... read more

We left Orlando and reached my in-laws condo in Hollywood. Next day, we went to visit the Everglades national park. This was the place I was most eager to see in this trip. :-) The Southern part of Florida is almost tropical. There are 2 distinct seasons: dry and wet. In the winter, we were in the dry season. This is the best time to visit as animals are concentrated around waterholes. We saw countless birds, alligators, turtles, snakes, fish, etc.... WE entered the park by Homestead city, and went all along to Flamingo where is the end of the road. Different loop trails allows you to visit different ecosystems: pine forests, (in fact quite common in center of Florida), cypress swamps, saw grass marshes, mangrove forests, and hammocks, (broadleaf 'islands' in the middle of a ... read more

We left Virginia, after visiting the caverns. We drove all day and took a motel on South Carolina. The next morning we hit the road and did a quick stop in Darien Georgia. An old english fort can be visited, (Fort King George). The city itself is very small, quiet, and typical of the South with huge oak trees. WE took the road and found a motel in Orlando. Next day, we visited Universal studios. It's quite fun. What I like, compared to traditional rides. is that when you wait, you have waiting rooms to put you in context, with actors, robots, lights and everything, so that you don't find the wait too long. The photos will show you what was popular back then. They change the attractions every year or so. Next stop, we will ... read more

North America » United States » Virginia » Luray November 27th 2003

This trip was to bring my in laws from Quebec Canada, to Florida, before winter. Many people do this trip in one long shot, (28-30 hours of drive....) or two. This is not my style. I planned the trip so that we could stop along the way at interesting places. First stop was Luray caverns in Virginia. IF you never visited a cavern before , then you miss on something!! It's like entering into a brand new and fascinating world!! Luray cavern are full of stalagmites, stalactites and other structures. Very important thing when you visit a cave and if you want to take good pictures, is a proper lighting. If light is not sufficient, you might need to bring your own, and even with this, cave must not be too big, or light won't be ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo August 18th 1999

This was a stop we did on the way back from the Philippines in 1999. We had about 22 hours to wait, so we decided to take the train and visit Tokyo for the evening. It was an impromptu visit, but gladly, we had a japanese friend, Minako, to help us!! We gave her a gift: a good size bottle of maple syrup. She really enjoyed it!! We took the train from the airport. One thing I noticed is how clean and well organized the country is. Culture fields are well cut and clean. When we arrived in Tokyo, the city starts abruptly with lots of buildings. It's very different from North American cities, where the suburbs stretch very far from around the city, (and not always pretty). In the city we visited the video game ... read more

This trip was for a wedding. We were based in Manila and had to go shopping a couple of times. It wasn't easy then to go too far, especially because we had to cross the whole congested city to go anywhere and that with the rainy season, some roads were difficult. In Manila we stayed in a middle class neighborhood. It was very comfortable, but we only had ac in one room, and temperature was well over 36 Celsius and 100% humidity all the time, so it was tough. In the city lots of slums, metal sheet "houses", but also very rich places, often side by side... which is a culture shock. Also, almost at every store in town, one or more armed guards. It's also a shock..but after a while you get use to it. ... read more
