North America August 15th 2010

Here are just various things I'd like to dump on the blog which are not meant to necessarily illicit a reaction from you...if anything they are just various facts and figures re: our trip. - our last camping neighbours were are follows 1) a 23yrs experience in military vet and his wife, camping since retirement. 2) an afghanistan war vet who did a tour in Kabul. He was with his 5 year old and 2.5 year old. He missed his first son's birth since he was overseas. Humbling to say the least. - Our last campground had a bar on site blasting music on sat nites. Why drive home from the bar when you can stumble back to your campsite. Trashy to say the least. Ugh. - People in Parrsboro will always say hi even if ... read more

You might think: they've quit the blog but not so! We were in a rather remote area of NS southwest that actually gave me my first ever "NO SERVICE" on my blackberry. Gasp! Say it wasn't so! Four days without consistent contact was hard but we've overcome! We were camping right on the Minas Bassin (wild!) which is fed by the Bay of Fundy waters. Wait 'till you see these pics! Highest tides recorded in the world, and some of the most breathtaking cliffs. In a nearby town, Parrsboro, they have fields full of blueberries. They are professional blueberry growers - I've never seen so many in my life. Anyways, I have a few posts to make so keep on reading. Now that we've been in NB for a few days we are slowly heading to ... read more

RATS freaked me out and lessened the quality of my downtown Halifax experience. All the construction going on and tearing down of all buildings is making the city rat infested...and Halifax folks are suffering "a bit" of an infestation. I thought it was super cute till I read the article which coincidently came out on CBC.CA today. So I only give 2.5 stars to this city which should be a 4. The pier is really nice and the port rocks, but the restoration of many of the buildings are far from authentic, there isn't enough " cute" factor to the shops which are widely commercial. Missing - a hip clientele to make it worth your while...they are selling something they don't yet have...and of course the rats! However, to see are the great views, the cool ... read more

You'd think this was obvious (and it is) but really it just hit me. Can't wait to see it. We are camping near Peggy's Cove (so cute here!) @ 25min or so from Halifax. Going to be spending at least 4 nights here before moving on. Welcome to Nova Scotia, after 10 days of PEI I was patato'd out. Fun fearless facts: 1. Be it Anne of Green Gables or Peggy of the Cove, the town's tourism board is going to milk a popular lady for all she's worth. Now there's something new. 2. Leave food near Felix and it will disappear. All of it. 3. Insta tantrums are easily accomplished by bringing boundless energy Lucca in for lunch - hence "no more outside time". 3. Felix is a blackberry addict. He stops crying the minute ... read more

You would think choosing titles are easy; afterall they are based on the general idea of the post. However, finding the general idea of the post is usually where the difficulty lies so therefore choosing a title isn't always so easy. This post is going to be about all the titles (and their general ideas) I could have named this post. Btw, please keep commenting on the blog. I love to hear from all of you and usually reply (see the comments section of the piece you posted on). 1. PEI and the fact that each town has more places of worship than houses. 2. PEI and the fact that they only have 18 outlets where they sell booze. 3. PEI really does look the show Anne of Green Gables shows it to be like. 4. ... read more

I love this trip and I love camping - but let me tell you - I hate bugs. Mostly the little ones - that get in your eyes, and that are harder to kill due to size (mosquitoes). I also hate deer and horseflies but at least you can see those coming. TIPS: 1. Don't park your trailer in the mudbog section of the campground. Like we are now. Nice sunset PEI - I'll look at it through my window txs. 2. Deerfly bite through leggings. I looking like a friggin dartboard waist down. Can someone pls tell me if scratching an itchy bite is ok? Can I take benadryl if I itch all ovah aka multiple bites of various species? The Benadryl bite stick doesn't work. Did it. Tried it. Got the Tshirt. It sucks. ... read more

North America July 23rd 2010

At one point, you get used to the drill. The setup, the living, the routine, the pack-in and moving on to the next destination. This is going to be a drab entry because - I feel very "chill". We've found our beat, the kids seem to be finding the pace to be good (though Felix has waken up howling two nights in a row now for no apparent reason - nightmares? - only to fall asleep right away again). We've been in Bouctouche NB for the past two days and ending the NB Acadian leg of our trip but more Acadian charms awaits us in PEI and NS. So yes - suprise! We are bouncing over to the island as we are only 130kms from the Confederation Bridge. This will be the first time I cross ... read more

All joking aside, I have a few points to make about the people and flavour of the Acadian Peninsula. It is also an oxy-moron for me to talk about this "en anglais" since it is without a doubt the very reason they stand they way they do today, and we are as we are. By we, I mean us "les franco-ontariens" whom are integrated when viewed in a positive light and a bit assimilated when viewed in a more realistic one. I also mean the "québecois" who always seemed to be martialed onto extreme language or separatist issues, as the young generation fails its' French class. For this reason, je vais continuer en français avec mes fautes d'ortographe, mes idées mal exprimées...mon français un peu trop anglais et ce avec fierté. Si j'ai appris quelque chose ... read more

After spending two days in Carleton-sur-mer with hot sunshine and great weather, we were happy to finally leave Quebec and move into NB. We checked things out quickly the night before at the campground playground with Lucca running around (sidebar: there is truly not much he can't climb up now) and Felix in the baby backpack. We decided to do the 250kms or so to take us through Campbellton and Bathurst to get us to Caraquet, in the Acadian Peninsula. We are going to be spending 3 days there in what seems to be Toddler club med...complete with water slides right on the beach. The campground is huge and is called Camping Colibri. We're going to be doing a day trip to the Acadian Isle from there. We have come to figure out in a short ... read more

North America July 14th 2010

Have kids, travelling and seeking a safe place to stretch your legs? Couldn't quite find a secure gated spot to let them run and roam as much as their blessed little hearts desire (before you have to stuff them back in car seats and hope to arrive at said daily destination before a meltdown)? Search no more! Turns out cemetaries are great! Morbid you'd think but since I'm thinking as a parent here, observe with me their utilitarian values. 1. They are gated/fenced. Why I don't know. Who are they trying to keep in/out? I've never actually not been able to enter one, and no one's actually dying to get out (waca waca...insert Renee-joke here). 2. They have lush gren grass. Safe on the knees of running carefree toddlers. 3. Unless I give little one a ... read more
