| 11th December 2008 Mom | message to Cathy - From: Goodbye?? Hi Kristin, This message is actually for Cathy in CA. I hope she sees it. Cathy, I am Kristin's mom and I can't tell you how moved I have been to read your comments to Kristin. What a world traveling and the internet has opened up. To know that a stranger, someone else's mom was following her blog and was concerned about what happened to her was so moving. As you certainly know, it was so hard to stand back and let them fly off to another continent. Then to have to deal with her being sick from such a distance, and to hear about all the strange encounters, to have spotty phone connections, etc. well, now its hard to believe its over. We did it! I'm so glad I heard about most of these things "after the fact", aren't you! I hope you have a wonderful homecoming with your son and happy holidays together. Warmly, Renee p.s. Where in CA do you live, what area? |
| 10th December 2008 april | goodbye - From: Goodbye?? you did an AWESOME job with this travel blog. it was a great way for us to keep contact with you, and your way of telling a story is fascinating. you truly have a gift. i'm so happy you are almost home and i'm sorry for all that you have to leave behind. the end of one chapter is the beginning of another. love ya |
| 9th December 2008 Cathy Enright | Good luck to you! - From: Goodbye?? Hi Everything Yellow! Just another comment from your fans in California. Good luck to you in the rest of your life's adventures. Thank you for your blog; it helped me get through my son's semester in Ghana. He will be leaving Ghana on Sunday, and like you has many thoughts, experiences and emotions to sort through. I can't wait to see him, just as I'm sure your family cannot wait to see you! Best Wishes, Cathy |
| 9th December 2008 Toni | - From: Goodbye?? Can't wait to see you!!!! Have a great trip. |

| 11th November 2008 Erika | - From: The idlenes of words to cover weeks Hi! My name is Erika and I'll be going to Ghana in April.. I can't wait! I love your blogs.. will you be going to Togo to extend your visa? Now that would be interesting.. |
| 11th November 2008 Toni | - From: The idlenes of words to cover weeks Kristin, your email made me cry so many times that it has taken me all morning to read and bit, quit, read a bit and quit. I love that I can hear the difference from the girl who arrived in Ghana, so aware of the differences and so homesick and the very grown up reflective woman who is embracing those differences with such fondness. What an experience...I know I have said that a few times! Election night here was not the experience you had there but it was quite a night! Tears flowing everywhere. My phone was going crazy and for the most part there were just simple 'I can't believe it' statements through the tears. Your friend wrote a great blog statement...he should but it on Obama's website. There is a place for reactions. I think the majority of people here have embraced a certain level of hope that was sadly missing from this country. The morning after the election, people seemed to be walking with their heads a little higher and smiling a bit more. I can't wait to see what the next 4 years holds. Enjoy your next month! |
| 11th November 2008 Cathy | Love your blog! - From: The idlenes of words to cover weeks Hi Everything Yellow! My co-worker/friend and I have been following your blog faithfully. We started reading it back in August as my son was preparing for his semester abroad in Ghana with SIT. He is there right now, but since he has been traveling around the country so much, he doesn't write a blog; so we have been reading yours along with other students blogs. You have helped us gain a bit of an understanding of the country. I just thought you should know that you have fans here in California. We have worried about you when you've been sick and we have been happy to read about your awesome experiences! Thank you for writing! |
| 23rd October 2008 kimi | why? - From: Just another week really why are some profs fleeing the country? for how long? do they talk about it in your classes? i feel bad for the girl you said is going home. that is sad. also i feel bad for your camera. that is sad too. guess what, pretty soon it will be thanksgiving and then christmas! i can't believe it is so hot there...you'd be miserable here...it's been so cold!!! |
| 23rd October 2008 Toni | - From: Just another week really Hey Kristin, you SOUND less energetic! So, think of it this way...the highs are now in the 50s and falling all the time. I would love to feel that sun and we haven't even gotten to November yet!!! It is going to be a tough winter for you given the temps that you will leave there coming home in December. Perry will need to work extra hard to keep you warm. I can't wait to see you gota and kpasta!!! How are you feeling?? Sorry about the camera. |
| 18th October 2008 april | - From: The world is such a wonderful place so just when it seems like the entire blog is safe and fun (including the "spiritual pancakes"... do you think nanny has the recipe for those) you go and scare your mother with malaria stories. lion and zion and oceans and thatched roofs. sounds like a great weekend. glad to hear you are feeling fine, and i'm currently spending the weekend with renee, daniel, sherry, and nanny. cows, hayrides, and pumpkins so far :) |
| 17th October 2008 Toni | - From: The world is such a wonderful place Sounds like you are back to being healthy and having some great adventures. You give such great discriptions...I can imagine just how beautiful it is. So, what are spiritual pancakes? Lion and Zion...remember those names when you have your first child! This sounds so peaceful compared to an overstuffed enclosed stadium with thousands of out of control people!!!! Stay healthy! |
| 15th October 2008 Toni | - From: say cheese..."serious." This is how I can tell I am getting old...that sounds horrifying!!! I am glad you are feeling better and off on adventures...but still sounds horrifying! |
| 15th October 2008 kimi | awkward translations - From: say cheese..."serious." your awkward translation to english made me laugh. i cant wait to hear you speak twi when you get back! sounds like such a crazy weekend...you silly americans and your silly ticket lines. hahaha. god, i would be so confused. |
| 8th October 2008 Jamie | : ) - From: Meko kurom daa...I go to town everyday. mepe Ghana...I like Ghana. Mepatkyew to so...give me more as a gift please. (all spelled wrong I am sure) The pictures were beautiful! I'm sure you were loving the palm trees and ocean! That sucks about your camera. Mine is actually doing the exact same thing, so if I figure out a solution for it I'll be sure to let you know! Nanny, Aunt Renee, and my mom came to visit me in Erie a couple weeks ago and we were reading your post about your tro-tro adventures. Halarious! There were tears we were laughing so hard! It sounds like you're finally comfortable in your surroundings! I'm so happy for you! |
| 8th October 2008 Mom | !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - From: The adventures of students other than me... What do your mean, make your way carefully there! Are you nuts? How long is that girl stranded there - and where is she and what is she doing while she's there? The border sounds pleasant too. What exactly was so great about Togo????? Please give an update on the Togo situation. Love, Mom |
| 7th October 2008 april | fristin!! - From: The adventures of students other than me... my dear sweet niece... if you want to travel to Togo and not scare the pants off of your parents, perhaps you should downplay the dangers of its people :) so glad to hear that you are feeling better. steelers are winners and thank goodness they have a bye week b/c i'm pretty sure ben's arm is hurting!! also kendall has developed and perfected 3 different styles of walking depending, i suppose, on her mood and the message she wants to relay to those around her. april and the gang. |
| 7th October 2008 Toni | - From: The adventures of students other than me... Kristin, staying put for a while sounds like a good idea. How are you cooking? Do you have access to a stove? Any chance you could take one of those kids home??? I know a little boy who really really would love to have a brother! Pauline is going to Nigeria next Thursday. If you remember, she and her husband adopted a little girl from Nigeria. Chinanza qill be 5 in March. They have adopted two more...a little girl and a little boy. They are weeks old and in the custody of her sister right now. Pauline will go and complete papers, but won't be able to leave with the babies. She will go back and pick them up in December and they will come home. Togo is probably wonderful, but the trip sounds a little scary. Always bring bribes. I have a friend from India and says that you can get anywhere in India with little effort and copies of Playboy!!! Are you feeling like yourself now...completely? Stay healthy and safe! |
| 7th October 2008 Daniel | - From: I just spent the weekend in a hut inbetween the river and the ocean (and pictures are up!!) Hi kristin i miss you. The steelers won sunday late in the 4th quater. love you -Daniel |
| 4th October 2008 Mom | - From: Ghana: you STILL give me fever, sigh Here I am so worried about the dangers in Africa - well, guess what I heard on the radio. A woman was bitten at Pitt by an 18 pound research monkey today! And it had been probably been used to study diseases! Puts it into a little better perspective for me. Be careful. Love, Mom |
| 2nd October 2008 kimi | ahhh - From: Ghana: you STILL give me fever, sigh not sick again! poor kristin :-( well the good news is, if you were in the US w/o health insurance there you would have been paying like 62073468327 dollars. i'm glad to hear you're feeling better...i was wondering where your blogging went! and even though there's mold on your things...lets not lie. you've lived in a dirtier places (3815 dawson). miss you! |
| 1st October 2008 Perry | Tough Stuff - From: Ghana: you STILL give me fever, sigh Hi Kris, it's so good to hear you are feeling better and that you are able to resume tackling the mold problem! We are all sending healthy bacteria your way so I'm certain you will stay happy and healthy. |
| 1st October 2008 Toni | - From: Ghana: you STILL give me fever, sigh Your mom told me you were sick and I have been waiting for this blog entry...a sign you are getting better. There is nothing wimply about getting sick in a 3rd world country and getting better! Hopefully that one is behind you and you can back to all those great experiences! The mold sounds gross...on your chairs???? Hope you are completely yourself by the end of the day and on to telling us all about your great experiences! |
| 1st October 2008 april | hiya - From: Meko kurom daa...I go to town everyday. mepe Ghana...I like Ghana. Mepatkyew to so...give me more as a gift please. (all spelled wrong I am sure) kristin, we hope you are doing well this week :) and pray for your health, safety, happiness, and a wonderful experience. kendall cries 75% of the day sometimes, jackson shaved the side of his hair above his ear with a beard trimmer, and buster has a bad knee and can barely climb stairs. from the perspective of the mother... its really annoying to hear anyone cry that much, buster weighs 75#, and thank goodness jackson didn't cut his head!! anyway the point is... i'm quite sure that elephants, and weird food in the night market, and tro-tros, and everything else is better than this :) love and miss you, april and the gang |
| 30th September 2008 Reuben | Impressed - From: I just spent the weekend in a hut inbetween the river and the ocean (and pictures are up!!) Kristin, You are one brave lady. Not only was I proud to see you eating the banku, you were taking down that meal like you have been having it your entire life. I am glad to hear that you are doing well and enjoying Ghana. You know what's ironic, you have probably been to many more places in Ghana than I have. P.s. Have you tried guinea fowl khebabs? They are really good. |
| 27th September 2008 kimi | food - From: Meko kurom daa...I go to town everyday. mepe Ghana...I like Ghana. Mepatkyew to so...give me more as a gift please. (all spelled wrong I am sure) that soup sounds alright but everything else (the clumps of food to soak it up with) sounds pretty gross. i guess it's a good thing you aren't too much of a picky eater! |
| 26th September 2008 Toni | - From: Meko kurom daa...I go to town everyday. mepe Ghana...I like Ghana. Mepatkyew to so...give me more as a gift please. (all spelled wrong I am sure) ...and as for the economy...not so good. However it is very difficult to weed out what is real and what is political posturing right now. Plans in the works to fix some things, but the plans thus far don't really sound very sound. As a plan has not been agreed upon thus far many are expecting stocks to continue to slide until there is an agreed upon plan. |
| 26th September 2008 Toni | - From: Meko kurom daa...I go to town everyday. mepe Ghana...I like Ghana. Mepatkyew to so...give me more as a gift please. (all spelled wrong I am sure) Wow, Kristin, your weekend sounds exactly like mine!!! Ok, maybe not. I am so amazed at the wonderful experiences you are having. Ed and I spent Thanksgiving one year with Pauline and her extended family. She made the soup for her mother and aunt who were visiting from Nigeria. I watched them eat it...very interesting. I did not eat it as I was pregnant at the time and Pauline suggested that I not! I hope your camera starts to work...the pictures were just wonderful. |

Kristin, I don't know how difficult it was to upload these but they are just fantastic!!! Fantastic! The ocean pictures are just beautiful. Joe was especially impressed with the elephant and the baboons. He read a story last year in class about the kente cloth...he was impressed to see you weaving one! These are just great...I am now absolutely sure that the canopy walk is not for me! Thanks so much for sending these. |

I had a meeting in Oakland last week...looks like the construction might be finished by the time you get back! Today is the first day of fall...it smells like fall. | 17th September 2008 sherry | crazy - From: Mepe nkatee. te so. (I like peanuts. Reduce the price) my my it sounds like the private dance lessons paid off! i would of liked to have been a little bird in that room watching for an hour or two. and the tro tros sound different.and with the seats not being completely attached i guess they can easily change from a 6 passanger to a 20 passanger and back! one day in the life of kristin barna is totally amazing. here in hickory im just excited for the fall lineup of The Office to start up. how pathetic! oh and there is a covered bridge festival this weekend, so there. dont get too jealous. love and hugs, aunt sherry |
| 17th September 2008 sherry | crazy - From: Mepe nkatee. te so. (I like peanuts. Reduce the price) so the private dance lessons paid off ! I would of liked to be a little bird in the room watching that for an hour or two. and the tro tro sounds crazy. after an exciting day like that none of ours compares. im just looking forward to the fall line up of The OFFICE on TV, anyway hugs and kisses to ya, love aunt sherry |
| 16th September 2008 april | twi - From: Mepe nkatee. te so. (I like peanuts. Reduce the price) mepe nkatee, especially in trail mix or ice cream :) and as far as i'm concerned, the only place to have any rhythm is in a dance club where its dark, loud with music, and has flashing lights. at least that's what i'm told since the dancing i do here at the house makes me look completely ridiculous. perhaps it is an inherited trait. have a great week. keep up the dancing anyway. and send more twi. |
| 16th September 2008 Toni | - From: Mepe nkatee. te so. (I like peanuts. Reduce the price) WOW! You are just having the most wonderful time! What an experience. I am so disappointed when I open my email and there is nothing from the Adventurs of Kristin! |
| 12th September 2008 Mom | - From: What you Ghana do about it. (haha) Hi Sweetie - Reading your update today I had one of those "oh my goodness, she's in Ghana" moments!!! You know that I'm so glad that you are doing well, having fun and having good moments. Let me know about the salsa dancing. What is your friend's name? I agree with Aunt Sherry, sounds like a cross between Fear Factor and Survivor! You go girl! Love, love, love, Mom Kimi - keep eating that ice cream! |
| 10th September 2008 kimi | hey lady! - From: 4 weeks! what an exciting blog entry! sounds like so much fun! i wanted to let you know i've been thinking of you a lot lately...i ate a mochi ice cream ball AND saw prof donaldson all in the same week! are you getting your daily dose of ice cream in ghana? probably not. there have been reports of a surplus of ice cream in the pittsburgh area now that you are gone...i've been trying to alleviate the problem, but i am no match. hahha also, i'm quite curious to hear that obama song. can't wait to see what you'll be up to next! |
| 10th September 2008 sherry | - From: 4 weeks! Kristin, im always so amazed by your writing and experiences. between the water bottle ants and the canapy walk it sounds like fear factor to me. I think your definetly ready for the try outs when you get home! miss you bunches aunt sherry |
| 9th September 2008 Toni | - From: 4 weeks! Kristin, sounds like you are having a fantastic experience!!! Glad to hear you are feeling better and I hope it stays that way. I am not so sure about a canopy walk!!! Since Hillary is out (yes, yes, I know Renee!!!), I am volunteering for Obama, but have not heard the song yet. On one of the Sunday talk shows, a rep of Kenya was asked his opinions of the US candidates...his response was very interesting. I imagine it is interesting to be out of the country when such a huge election is taking place here. It seems the news of the process is being heard around the world. Stay healthy! |
| 7th September 2008 Cindy | ANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - From: as i was thinking of a title, the guy next to me just said "I just want a BigMac so bad right now." | 2nd September 2008 Jaxson | - From: Running for my life from an elephant, and other adventures in Northern Ghana Hi Kris sorry I haven't had a chance to comment, I've been to busy sleeping and learning how to smile. The boys keep me busy dancing and singing and watching football, and mom is helping me learn some exercises so I can grow strong and healthy. Yesterday I had rice cereal for the first time, pretty tasty, although I think I ate to fast because I threw up all over uncle Perry. Perry keeps me updated on your trip and talks about you contantly, going on and on about how wonderful and brave you are. Can't wait to see you again!! Pap says hi and sends his best. |

| 29th August 2008 Dad | Love ya honey - From: In my bones? Hey Kristin - some days the road seems too long and the climb too steep to go on, but perseverance means staying in the fight and refusing to give up. You are an inspiration to us all by displaying your winner's attitude. Continue to focus on this day - 24 hours of unlived and unexplored gifts from God. You continue to stack them together to form a good life that you and all of us are proud of! Love ya, Dad |
| 28th August 2008 Toni | - From: In my bones? This is fantastic!!! Aren't these perceptions just amazing...more malleable bones! Trading condoms for bibles is just a great idea...but not so far off of what GWB has proposed for this country. Given an increase in teen birth rates for the first time in 15 years, I am guessing it doesn't work!!! Enjoy your trip, take lots of pictures!!! Oh, could you please send a picture of the campus monkey for my monkey, Joe? Aaron moved yesterday...many, many tears from a heartbroken Joe. |
| 28th August 2008 kimi | uuugh - From: In my bones? god, see that's part of the problem with africa! those that prey on the fact that they have strong beliefs in religion. wtf, that pisses me off and makes really angry. we all know that instead of teaching abstinence (which doesn't work), we should be taught safe-sex. ANGER. sorry. ANYWAY! your dance class sounds hilarious. i wish i could see! and i'm enjoying your pictures. its too bad you dont have faster connection to upload more. cant wait til your next blog! byeee!!!! |

| 21st August 2008 Corinne | hello - From: today everything really is finally yellow! Hi Kristin!! I have been keeping up with your blogs and I am so glad to hear you are finally feeling better. I too know the pangs of traveling sickness and certainly feel for you. Sometimes you just have to ride it out. I heard that there is some amazing music to explore in Ghana. Hopefully you get into your dance class or get to join in on a drum circle or something. Can't wait to hear more!! Peace and Love- Corinne |
| 21st August 2008 cindy | things are lookin' up - From: today everything really is finally yellow! so glad to hear things are getting better. getting updates from your mom and can hardly believe some of it. first, so so glad you are feeling better---i am sure once you feel 100% physically, you will be able to deal with everything else much easier. and once class starts, that will really keep you busy. not as much time to dwell on things----so make sure you take photos of the monkeys on campus----i think your mom and i saw a few of those at IUP in the olden days, but ours were usually carrying books. and that lady you said was carrying a large garbage bag on her head---how do you do that? wouldn't it cover her whole body----did she have holes cut out for her eyes like a burka? or what? | 19th August 2008 Perry | Hey hey hey - From: today everything really is finally yellow! Dancing. Fun handshakes. Yams. The Beach. Sounds like life in Ghana is on the upswing!!! Maybe the next time you work at Bravo you can carry trays on your head. Well I gotta go move a mountain, can't wait to see some pics. |
| 19th August 2008 Reuben | Sounds like you are almost fully adjusted - From: today everything really is finally yellow! Hello Kristin, I am glad to hear that you are doing much better. You seem to have fully adjusted to the Ghanaian way of life, speaking Twi and all. I am very jealous. Enjoy your yams and palava sauce. It is funny you should mention the bread and fried eggs........I used to eat it all the time when I was in legon. I will also recommend that you try the kelewele. It is made with fried plaintain and spices. Take care and make sure you always have your bottled water with you. Do you have a telephone number yet? |
| 19th August 2008 Toni | - From: today everything really is finally yellow! It is great to hear you are feeling better and enjoying the day. Pauline has written to her nephew, John, and he will be checking in with you. Joe was concerned that you were not feeling well but really jealous that you are on campus where there is a monkey walking around!!! |
| 19th August 2008 april | yikes - From: you give me fever my dear kristin, i wish and pray that you would feel wonderful and be able to enjoy and experience everything you should. a fever does not mean the worst though. so be sick, feel better, and move on. i love the blurb about the monkey and can't stop imagining a monkey just right there on campus :) doing laundry by hand, wow, how many things you will appreciate while you are gone. jackson is acting like he is going to puke on kendall so i probably should go. please please please feel better. we love you and miss you, april |
| 18th August 2008 kristin | think positive! - From: you give me fever hey, my most chipper of all friends. first of all, i'm pretty sure the bums here in oakland would like to pet through your hair too. hhahaha. second of all, good call on not eating the coconut. that's a shame...i love coconut. third of all, that is INSANE what was said to your african american friend! my friend alex told me people in uganda were in awe of her just b/c she was white. lastly, good idea emailing your doctor to be on the safe side. but think positive! perhaps this is your body's way of adjusting to the climate (really wet?), food, water, and living situation. i hope...i mean, know, that you will start feeling better!!! :-) |
| 18th August 2008 Toni | - From: you give me fever Kristin, can you call your dr? Can anyone here call your dr? Have you taken your antibiotics? |

| 17th August 2008 Toni | - From: hiiiiiiiii Kristin, We just returned from FL and I had an opportunity to read about your adventures thus far! So sorry to hear you were sick, but sounds like you are on the mend. Take lots of pictures...I want to hear about it all! | 17th August 2008 Reuben | Sorry about the Rice - From: hiiiiiiiii Hello Kristen, I am sorry to hear that you have been under the weather during your first days in Ghana. I hope all is well now. I understand you being tired of rice. People love rice in Ghana and it is the main staple. However, try some fried plantains or yams. Yams are like potatoes and pretty good. I am glad to hear that you love the fruits. How about jogging? Have you been able to go out for a run yet? Take care and make sure you get the mosquito net working properly. Insect repellers will also help. Reuben |
| 17th August 2008 Susan | - From: hiiiiiiiii Kristin! It is so nice to read all of these blogs. I'm glad you're feeling better...how scary and exciting at the same time. Miss you. --Suz |

| 15th August 2008 perry | Steelers in Toronto - From: the internet is fast today, so i just have to write! Hey bubs the Steelers lost to the Bills, sometimes looking very capable and sometimes looking very inept. Ben had a long touchdown pass to Santonio Holmes while the special teams continuous to struggle allowing yet another punt return. The defense looks good although their tackling could use some improvement. The game was played in a dome in Toronto so the Steelers probably missed the insane cheering of us crazy Pittsburghers. I can't wait to watch a game with you!!!! |
| 15th August 2008 d | no - From: the internet is fast today, so i just have to write! steelers lost 24-21 to the bills..game played in Canada |
