Liz and Pia

Hey peeps. If you're reading this, we're in Europe, having absconded with little more than a swiss army knife and our striking good looks. (WHAT?) Actually, we might be in India. Or Africa. Or the United Arab Emirates. Whatever.

Peace and love to all. Check it!

Hello faithful readers, Yes, I know it's been a while since our last update...this is due to a few things. Mainly, my laziness. Also, while we were in Bangalore, we really didn't do much of anything. Here's a brief summary: -A typical day for us went like this: wake up, eat, bathe, eat, Oprah, sleep, tea, t.v./reading, eat, sleep. These "activities" were interspersed with shopping, visiting relatives, and more eating. How will we ever readjust to normal life? -We took a daytrip to Mysore to see the palace and whatnot. Hindu temples = frantic and competitive. Really nice and blingy, though. And, you know, sacred and things. We each got blessed with turmeric by some wise-looking old man, and I thought he was really sweet, but then he made us pay him ten rupees. We also ... read more

Heya, Liz again. I've been nominated to do this blog too, given that it's my first time in India and my impressions are (obviously) more interesting. Right? Anyway, that goes without saying :) I'm not quite sure where to start, so I'll just try to summarize the week. We arrived in New Delhi last week after a flight on the nicest plane I'd ever been on. Free socks + eyemasks + Lou Reed Movie + Ice Cream. Kickass. We had a couple of layovers in the Middle East, and I have never, EVER experienced anything like the heat we felt when we stepped off the plane in Muscat. It was 1:00 in the morning, and the temperature had to be pushing 40 degrees. It was like stepping into an oven. Crazy. Even crazier: Omanian Dairy Queen ... read more

We´re leaving for India tomorrow! I can hardly believe that this part of our trip is over, and that in a month we´ll be back in Cowboyland... crazy. (side note: my parents ACTUALLY moved! Luckily, I´ve snuck into my program at UBC AND have a place to live next year, so soon enough I´ll be Vancouverbound.. weird to think about now). Anyway, this will be the last blog for Europe, so enjoy, ma´kizzles! We spent about five days in Prague, and that was more than enough. The city itself really was pretty, but to appreciate it you had to get past the sleazy strip joints, swarming crowds, and VLTs as far as the eye could see. On top of that, the locals (understandably) seem to hate the tourists for ruining their city´s charm, so it wasn´t ... read more

WARNING: Longest blog ever. If you make it the end, there´s a reward. If you don´t, I don´t blame you. Hey all, So, I realize it´s been a long, long time since our last blog...many apologies. Except probably no one cares, but I´ll pretend that we have an avid readership. I think Liz left off on our first day in Krakow, but in her half-awake state, she forgot to mention that on our very first tram ride in Poland -- from the train station to the hostel -- we had an unpleasant encounter with the tram police. We each had a transit ticket, and had validated them and we were keeping an eye out for our stop when the ticket inspector gets on. We handed him the tickets and after a few seconds he started sort ... read more

I'm not sure why I keep doing blogs right after I step off overnight trains, but here's my best attempt at summarizing the week's adventures, anyway. Enjoy! Budapest was freaking great. We ended up spending 8 days there, earning us free tshirts from our hostel and respect from all. We hung out with the most amaaazing people, some of whom will now be joining us for our weeklong vacation from backpacking in our timeshare in Austria... fast approaching, actually. Anyway, we somehow managed to stay for our first four days without even entering Pest (the modern, hep part of town) which I think may be some sort of record. After the marzipan extravaganza of the last blog, we went to these lush Turkish baths and just sort of wallowed in our own sloth (that expression looks ... read more

Hey kids, So, when Liz last wrote we had just arrived in scorchingly hot Brasov, where we ended up staying for four days. We stayed in a wonderful hostel, and met some really awesome travellers, and basically did a whole lot of nothing. My birthday was low-key and very relaxing (and thanks to everyone for the birthday props). We basically drank, and ate, and Liz somehow snuck out and bought me a chocolate eclair, which was delicious, and it was just a really good day. Oh, we also took a cable car up the side of this mountain that overlooks all of Brasov, and when we were up there, this weird, skinny, tall park ranger started following us. We had asked him to take our picture, which he did, and then he made us follow him ... read more

Alright, back to more informative (but slightly less awesome) blog entries. Liz here, reporting from surprisingly hot Transylvania... We just stepped off the train, so please forgive my incoherence. A lot has happened in the past few days, so here goes. We parted ways with the lovely English girls we were staying with in our guesthouse in Dubrovnik, after an amazing three island cruise (advertised as "fish picnic"... thought that was funny) and made our way up through Croatia into Bosnia. The bus ride was pretty sobering... we saw entire villages that had been abadoned, buildings completely burnt out, and more machine gun spray than I really want to think about. It was pretty alarming, especially against the scenic backdrop. Anyway, after about 7 hours of that, we arrived in Sarajevo where we were met by ... read more

Hey guys, After the slight delay due to the rail strike, we finally managed to scramble our way into Croatia, as promised. Our train was only a little late, which was nice, but at about 2:00 am the train man poked us awake and, in broken English, managed to convey that it would be in our best interests to get off right then (we had no idea where we were -- turned out to be the capital of Slovenia). Anyway, we fell out of the train and ended up wandering into an all night Kebap place where we hung out with a nice Hungarian guy who made us doner kebap that rivaled anything we had in Turkey. After that, we basically just killed time sitting in a small, dark room full of Slovenians in a semi-conscious ... read more

Ciao readers, So, since the last blog entry, we've actually been pretty productive...some of the highlights: -Our two days in Rome were frenetic and jam-packed. We saw all the Rome-y things, walked for hours, and only treated ourselves to gelato once (a day, that is). Towards the end of our second day, we decided we wanted to see Old Pope's tomb...however, we were stopped after security found my swiss army knife (Liz, after: "What? He's already dead!"). So that was sorta disappointing, as was discovering at 10:30 p.m. that the Metro was closed for repairs. I would like to say that we instead walked back to the hostel, but that would be a lie...we took a cab. -Next day, we boarded a train for Florence. Twenty minutes into the ride, this sour-faced man trudged down the ... read more
